  • Ride from Buckeye Yard to Stanley Yard in the cab of a Penn Central locomotive on silent Super 8mm film. This was taken by Paul Geiger, who was normally a tower operator, but apparently (temporarily) moved to train service. Either that or this ride was for "qualification" purposes. The RDC looking thing was a rail detector car. I don't know the story about the wrecked freight cars.

The 1970's was a great era to visit and get photos of open towers if granted. Dunkirk Tower was a well maintained example, and the Operators I met were friendly. This is awesome footage!

Dunkirk tower is still standing, and is in amazingly good shape on the outside.

Wow! Thanks for this video. Great to go back in time and compare to what I see daily.

From a time when freight cars actually were colorful, instead of all being brown.

Does he have a video on Kenton? Haven't seen that! I'm always hoping to see some footage or photos of the tower inside and out.

I often catch myself watching these videos and thinking about what’s left of what once was. Where are the cars and trucks in the auto racks, the buildings, the rail cars, the people. All of the witnesses of this snapshot of history, where are they all now?

Thanks for posting these movies. I worked at Buckeye during the Conrail break up and ran the Toledo Branch a number of time. This was such a great yard in design. But the death of the Bradford line started a long slow death spiral. I left after only a few years. The management was shifting from old Conrail guys and the whole thing seemed out of place to NS’s operations. So staying in that yard looked pretty bleak.
There were some great railroaders in that yard.

Really enjoyed this video but what I'd give to see a cab ride on the Bradford Line!

This is great footage for me personally. I got a chance to see the Stanley hump yard for the first time. I have possession of a bell from a Fairbanks-Morse engine that used to be the hump engine at Stanley Yard. Was very cool to see where it comes from.

If they have good maintenance and and better freight equipment remodel then the penn central would still be on the rail today

It's a ton more complicated than that. Penn Central was doomed from the start
