James Chance & the Contortions - I Can't Stand Myself

- From the "No New York" compilation (1978).
Pat Place: "The most significant thing I remember about those sessions is that he said, 'Why don't you go in and warm up?' We warmed up with 'Can't Stand Myself,' which we'd never played before. And Eno recorded the warm-up and that's what came out. That was the first time we'd played it, and he got it, and that was it." - Hudba
RIP James Chance
Least you get to see Anya again
RIP James Chance
April 20, 1953 - June 18, 2024
When I was a teen in the 1970's, surrounded by disco and stadium rock, I was blown away by this music because it was fresh and alive. The other stuff, Led Zeppelin, the BeeGeez and the like, all sounded like it was ground out by formula, just a re-cycling of the same old clichés over and over again. I was sorry to hear of James Chance's passing.
Rest in peace our Chance.
This is perhaps the greatest single piece of recorded music in human history. I'm dead serious. This is revolutionary in every respect.
it's just a james brown cover
Neil A nah
@@neila6340 gets me every single time lol
I do appreciate your enthusiasm however, you've probably been sleepin' when they broadcasted "Trout Mask Replica" by Cpt. Beefheart :)
Truth
RIP James, I'm playing Buy at work tomorrow whether they like it or not
This is a great remake.
They redefined it and made it their own.
As far as comparing this to JB and saying it's funkier, that's hilarious.
You are either high or sorely lacking knowledge of what funk is.
This is not funkier. It's not funky at all.
It's schizophrenic, jarring, hypnotic, bombastic, and amazing.
By comparing them you don't do justice to either of them.
This music scared me when it first came out; now it makes me smile.
i saw james two nights ago. still contorting, screaming and his sax playing even better !
i also found out he lives in my neighborhood!
Still playing around on the east coast...first heard of him on the new Yorker a couple years back...a description of the contortions back in the day. Announcing an upcoming event.... Contort yourself!
@@greglopez9704 Whaaa, is he still playing!? HOOK A LADYBOI UP
RIP JAMES CHANCE
Those are unusual chords.
Ever have Brian Eno at one of your shows, front and center looking scared for his soul sonic life?
Great quote by Pat Place. Love that story. Thanks for posting this. RIP James Chance/James White. Thanks for the fun.
This version is just STUPIDLY funky! I've heard it a million times, and every time I hear it, I can't sit still! They completely owned this song - I never thought I'd say this, but they outfunked James Brown himself here!
3/4 months ago I rediscovered this song, after 30 years, on youtube and keep listening to it
it's amazing - I can't believe it is a recording of the first time they play it - it's just perfect - at the same time I wish I could be able to remix it - I have heard different live versions, but i can't get enough, I would like to remix it like it happens in my mind - by the way it's amazing how james chance is still alive (and dancing) - I saw him live in milano (Italy) in 1981 with the "blacks"
Remember when he teamed up with Debra Harry and played Hurrah in NYC? He was a recognized, explosive figure on the NY Scene, especially at Max's. A true original!
RIPJames Chance
makes me wanna see this live and feel the vibe of the crowd. i like it!
fuck yea.
Ya'll know what you would've been in for, right?
Ive played bass for 40 years and still never have got as great a bass sound as that.
The bass is what keeps me coming back to this the most
seen him live in nyc 1n 1978... today i'm happy about it thouigh the concert only lasted about 15 minutes, before james throw his microphone at his sound engineer .. and hit him. the guy jumped on stage, a fight started. the drum kit collapsed... the curtain fell.. i guess the name of the venue was "Rock Bottom" some where in the vilage :)
This is beautiful
you see, it's stories like these that are the reason i'm about to get Sax Maniac tattooed on my
I'd believe it. Soundmen are the bane of a live bands' existence
That tracks
How do they get the bass to so damned EVILLLL OH
MY GAWD
Rest in Peace James !
this is so good
There's plenty of great music today. That's the problem, really, there's too much of it. In the olden times something fresh and great stood out, and if you heard it, lots of other people were hearing it too, because of the limited media opportunities. Now, it's all media, all the time, and if you listen to one hour of a less-then-conventional college radio station you'll hear several things that you'd think are really great, and you'd be right, and you'll forget them before dinner.
Back when media options were limited, we were force-fed what record and radio executives thought was supposed to be cool. That problem has been resolved. Meanwhile, the odds of your becoming a widely popular musician today are the same as they always were -- infinitesimally small.
Blablablablablaksisjwhwiska
And 8 years later it's only gotten worse
Basically all of the music I like most I heard on a radio station like that (WFMU). I didn't forget about it--quite the contrary. They have online archives going back about 20-25 year's of shows. Being hopelessly innundated with good music is not a recent development, though we're definitely more innundated now. It's just a lot easier to fall down the rabbit hole because so much more is readily accessible.
@@eddied8851 Exactly. I'm not exactly pining for Phil Spector to save me from myself.
Thanks for posting this.
There's a story that James Brown heard about the interesting work Pat Place was doing on the slide guitar in this group and checked out the band
Great music for New Year's Eve
awesome!
Love the song title! Thanx Jerry A! For putting me onto you guys. And going SxE.
Not easy to take an original away from the titanic James Brown, almost unheard of, but they did it here, it’s their song
This one cut was worth the $4.99 I paid for the no New York compilation back in ‘78. Blows JB version away 🕉☯️🙀🐾
What are ridiculous comment to say that this nonsense blows Mr. Brown’s version away.
Awesome.
Dear Sierra Sound...I remember when you were the ONLY record store in the county,
and I was told this stuff was unavailable IF it existed.
...well, here WE are.
When JAMES did his thing only performance ticket holders and album purchasers knew the real deal of the BROWN wannabe but covering tunes wasn't the tack taken. Familiar riffs were worked but JAMES sang in a manner any audience member or fan could imitate. Loved him for that. Might be best live band performance in No Wave, even better than SUICIDE.
And yes, this is awesome. I've got the record, I was thirty when it came out and I was lucky enough to be in the record retail business. Otherwise I might have missed it.
fucking hell, I'm just now finding about his passing from the comments on this video
RIP James
I saw the Contortions at the MX-80 in Mnpls. Bow down!!
I
happy 68 ;-)
I GoT the LP.......NO NEW YORK !!!
If you love that album please please please look for a compilation album of no wave called No Wave Jose - it's incredible
The Best😊
Seriously doe, few people (never mind white people and never mind punks) can play James Brown's music this convincingly.
Yes.
the Boss!!!
Pat Place is so fucking cool
hell yeah
Who took the photographs? They're great and they deserve a credit!
guessing Marcia Stiener took some of them
i'd also guess Julia Gorton
@@richardspeziale do you mean Marcia Resnick?
James Chance is like the white, neurotic version of James Brown.
+AeolisticFury Anticiped the first Red Hot Chili Peppers, only that James Chance don`t used rap.
:D :D :D
Hahaha yeah
Noooo, maybe neurotic version of Jello Biafra..yessss
he's like a like of a not that was not even a little even
@DenyVoidDead James still records every once in a while - the group is pretty much long gone (several members/associates are now deceased).
geniale
Teerrriffic !!!!
Usually what they REALLY mean, even though they refuse to acknowledge it: "I'm past my prime. I wish my favorite bands from 20 years ago were still cooll so I could be too"
Nice shiner there James
I Heart Noise / Ilyab S
Lawd this is amazing. I loved the shows at the Mudd Club. Miss Mudd Club.
Grew UP on JAMES BROWN and collected records of ALBERT AYLER ERIC DOLPHY ART ENSEMBLE of CHICAGO ANTHONY BRAXTON ERIC DOLPHY. And JB/JC could wail blues. He knew cold that sonic. B.B. KING (rip) might admire JB/JC blues singing...and JB/JC voice isn't smooth. Voice is less than untrained. Just wailing about pain and playing artfunk and for night of performance and the next day I was just a better rather than bitter person.
Lawd this is amazing.
+Ethan Hill You have good taste in music.
first time i have heard these guys......
pretty good actually
:)
No wave at its finest.
And that's where they just suck for not realizing how decentralized music is. Everything that once was and can be co-opted or evolved or deconstructed or straight ripped off is always going to be cool to someone. In 21st century, everyone is hip, everyone is square"
I am not, i am a loser!
I got color photos of him at his peak
Frickin' HECK! :o
Some of the styles of clothes they wear here are becoming popular again, which I find to be interesting.
!!!
A kind of british #HoneymoonKillers (Belgian)... Just powerful ! 🤩
They're American, specifically from (No) New York
People who think music isn't as good as when they were a teenager are hilarious. It's never a matter of preference based on nostalgia and simply being the right age. It's just facts man, musica soooo commercial
What the hell is the James Chance song that has the slow staticy bass intro that goes on for awhile with similar lyrics, about him not being able to stand himself? Christ, I wish I could remember....can anyone help me out?
Throw Me Away. Sorry this is so late haha
Funk as Fuck
no wave!
Whoa in one of the pictures some guy is wearing what appears to be a Crispy Ambulance T-shirt and he's crying. Whoa Scooby let's get out of here.
3:43 bes sax freak out ever
i how now i got this weird tolerance to h hate rejction and pain , you i still w&an't to share with ohter don't remember where i develop and incris this need of disturbing the other and s show them the wrong way
“HEY JODY! CAN YOU STAND YOURSELF?”
[lurching trash compacted guitar]
James Chance & the Contortions - I Can't Stand Myself 1225pm 25.8.23 the disrespectful keyboard playing very reminiscent of the fall.... other than that very enjoyable... the hives kindda went there and kindda said: that's us... but with more professionalism.
Pat Place & Jody Harris. Names I haven't thought of for many years!
Went on to Bush Tetras and the Raybeats. Great musicians!
This is a genre of music? I was just making fun of it in another video. This joint is tight.
There is only one James Chance.
Not a genre.
Nothing compares.
There was the New York No Wave scene.
But James Chance was the only musician there.
*when the kitchen was in the kidz*
So this guy basically invented moshing.
(By attacking people).
This song sounds like early Devo but with a different singer. I could totally hear Mark Mothersbaugh singing this. But it's not Devo, it's a great band that is very underrated
Sounds like a cop out
so tuf
@kingofcrunk1010 I was exaggerating. There are some decent bands today. But I still think radicalism is gone from rock.
jazzcore :P
James Chance & Repubik, Ich bin schmutzig ! (I'm dirty)

This is honestly dissonant garbage.

If you don't like it, why waste time saying bad things?
