📌A little Natamycin information: It is used for the treatment of fungal infections in humans. Natamycin is the only antifungal medication approved by U.S. Food and Drug Administration. Natamycin is a macrolide antifungal used to treat fungal infections of the eye. According to the Mayo Clinic Natamycin belongs to the group of medicines called antifungals. It is used to treat some types of fungus infections of the eye and is available only with your doctor's prescription. Natamycin (a/k/a Natacyn) is used to treat keratitis (cornea infection), blepharitis (eyelid infection), or conjunctivitis (pink eye) that's due to a fungal infection. The preservative appears on Whole Food’s “Unacceptable Ingredients for Food” list and has been barred from products sold by the grocery chain since 2003. You can check out my All-Purpose Prep Seasoning here www.shopcookingatpamsplace.com If you did not know about this drug being in shredded cheese, subscribe and turn the notification bell to all so you can stay informed. You can't trust anything you buy in a grocery store anymore without reading everything on the label! Thank you Pam for staying on top of things! God bless you always sister!
You should also know what those ingredients actually do, because powdered cellulose is an inert substance within the human digestive system. We do not absorb it, nor does it interact chemically with our bowels. The drug Natamycin has been used for decades in the food industry, and its medical use is limited to topical applications only, because it also has a negligible absorption factor when passing through the human digestive system. Besides, if you still are afraid of the Natamycin, Whole Foods market sells several shredded cheeses without it (though they still contain cellulous). Regardless this is a big nothing burger, IMHO.
If you want to cringe more, don't think wood chips, think sawdust (food grade, of course). I just throw in a clean paper towel after shredding into the container for the anti-caking.
I am so glad that in Australia, shredded cheese is just grated cheese, and is in the refigerator in the supermarket. It can clump. It can go mouldy if you pull it out of the packet with your fingers, but if you tip it out, it stays good. Also stays good if you freeze it, and use it frozen. Yes, the more stuff we do for ourselves, the less additives we will be consuming, and the cheaper things are. Thanks for your good advice, Pam! 🙂👍❤🦘🦘🦘

I've mentioned this on different channels but nobody addresses it. It's not just in shredded cheese, it's in a lot of dairy products to prevent mold. It's sprayed on the outside of un-shredded cheese as well. The safest cheese is one with a rind. Thanks for having the mettle to talk about it.
I didn't know that, but nor am i surprised in the slightest as nearly all food has been messed with in some way, it is no coincidence that people are having far more health problems and conditions etc. Thanks for the heads up though Pam! 😉
@@lindaholland1083 Hope your keeping up on the dog food that is poisoning dogs! List is long. I went raw last yr at the Vets office I read every bag they had on display & was discussed in the ingredients. I brought it to their attention! They don't care. Make your own raw or partially cooked dog food for your lovely pouches!! This Dog Food Co-op is no joke!! It's all poison.
And these health conditions are getting harder and harder for the docs to diagnose. In part, because many are unaware of the crappy foods that they are eating and don't keep a food journal. No wonder so many people are leaving the medical field!!!
I'm allergic to natamycin, but I still manage to find shredded cheese without natamycin in it. (And without cellulose powder) You can usually find it in the deli section, shredded on site, rather than the pre-packaged commercial shredded cheese in the dairy section. It's usually better quality cheese than the cheese in the dairy section, too. You can also find it at specialty shops. We used to shop at an Italian shop that had the most wonderful Romano cheese made with real sheeps's milk, and she would shred it right there while you waited.
Our food supply is a minefield. I read labels frequently but many dangers are hidden behind misleading words and titles. I thank you for this bit of valuable advice.

@@Monkeyboysdontknow I agree, Natamycin has been extensively researched, independently in many many countries and the amounts used as a preservative is nothing compared to the concentration used in the prescription. Its used in food at very low quantities to fight fungus growth.... its used as a medicine in concentrated quantities for the same purpose. This video is misleading, there is no danger when used in low quantities to fight fungus in foods and the studies prove this.
@Monkeyboysdontknow Who said anything about cellulose being dangerous? I heard nothing that suggested that. What I did hear, however, was cellulose being used in conjunction with Natamycin. Whether or not this drug is considered safe is a question for all to ponder over, to , avoid. In my opinion, I prefer to avoid all pharmaceutical products that have no place in our food supply. btw, glyphosates are a proven toxic chemical that is present in nearly everything we ingest. Yet, in spite of the documented evidence, the industry continues to tout its safety. As for me, I will follow my own instincts.
I do lawn care during the summer months and ended up getting something in my eye that caused a fungal infection (worst one in my 49 years). I had to get a prescription of Natamycin to clear it up. The one little bottle cost over $500 and felt like putting liquid chalk in my eye, every 2 hours for the first 5 days. Thank you for sharing this information.
Oh my gosh, thank you so much for bringing attention to this. This is why so many Americans are sick with so many ailments. When I was a child I never heard of so many sicknesses including children now a days.
@@katstorm13Gee, that makes it OK then? GMOs are so bad today that they changed the term to 'bioengineered ingredients', & now you must use your smartphone to scan a QR code on the packaging to find out what's in your food. Does that seem normal to do? How many G'mas are pulling out smartphones in grocery stores when shopping? How many ppl look for "non-GMO" not realizing that other things even worse are in their food? Why does most of the world ban GMOs, but not the US? Did you know that to be called vegan, all ppl have to do is follow a few rules to qualify their products? Chickens that free range, & grass-fed cows are still eating GMO corn in their feed & hay/straw. You wanna know how to eat healthier? When ppl like you trivialize things, what you're really doing is discounting facts, & trying to normalize that which is bad for us. Telling ppl something is ok bc it's been around for awhile is nonsensical. It means nothing. You might as well say you love eating chemicals, & can't get enough! What is the point of your post? I hope you wake up & realize that a little bit of this chemical, & 'acceptable' limits of that chemical all add up to toxicity over time. There is nothing new under the Sun, just new ways to make it edible, toxic & more difficult than it already is.

If you don’t want your cheese to clump after shredding you can you 1/4 tsp of cornstarch and sprinkle that in your baggy with the newly shredded cheese.
@@georgiaworth6667 you can always grow corn, harvest it, wash it, shuck the kernels, and boil them, remove them from the water, boil the water out to separate the starch, dry the starch, dehydrate it then use it. That's how you get corn starch without the glyophosphate. It's probably also better to make cheese as homemade won't contain dyes or preservatives either not to mention glyophosphates as the cows eat the grass and corn products. I think I'll just stick to adding in the 1/4 tsp in the bag... however I love making homemade cheese 😊 cornstarch however requires a lot of corn to make a little starch of I want to can the corn to put on my shelves.
I just informed my daughter that we will STOP buying shredded cheese and that I will happily shred any type of cheese we need! This information explains so many things that I wondered about when we used shredded cheese for so many meals. How our gut issues seemed to be exacerbated for seemingly no reason. Thanks again for your very important information.
There is a good reason for, um, All Of that Farting! If you have been antibiotics - You should know that along with killing off a lot of 'bad' bacteria, antibiotics also kill off some 'good' bacteria - so when you eat (or drink milk products - such as cheese, yogurt, cottage cheese etc, -those things contain 'good' bacteria, so it tends to replenish that good bacteria Which is a good thing - so - sometimes - with a prescription, depending on the type of infection -And the type of antibiotic - they might tell you to stay away from milk products - however -it is a good thing to replenish those 'good' bacteria using milk products - but if your getting a 'war' in your gut you might want to get some 'beano' which is supposed to stop some of those problems, but, to be honest, that 'over-the counter Beano really did NOT work for me, but it might work for you. I get recurrent infections so maybe that's why, most cases of 'lactose intolerance' is NOT the real issue - it's the 'replenishing' of the good gut bacteria. Having been on antibiotics for long stretches, a month or more - I fart like an old tractor! I try to stay away from elevators - unfortunately - especially for appointments, I can't always do that! Several years ago I was at home on my birthday and it was happening a lot when I was celebrating with some friends having a few beers, then I came up with a song, which I called 'The Fart Song' I'll tell you people were laughing - here's the first veres: "Help Me Now I Think I'm Gonna Fart - Get Outta The House Before I Blow It Apart The Smell Was So Bad I Almost Cried And I Did When I Saw That My Dog Had Died!" Agreed, it is our responsibility to educate ourselves but the problem is bc it's allowed, and has been for so long, and most are unaware or don't care, it's thoroughly infiltrated our environment..which makes it impossible to avoid and gets worse every year. Of course that makes it even more important to avoid whatever possible, however we can but we need to also do whatever we can to help w awareness..it needs to stop from the top down or our children are doomed. @@DontStepInTheGreaseMost people understood from the video not to purchase any shredded cheese. As she stated, it doesn't matter what type of cheese or what brand.
It's to make the cheese not clump together. All plants have cellulose in it. I've never seen a hint of wood chips, even tiny shredded ones, in shredded cheese.
Why exactly are we surprised? If you buy things that require a natural storage, they’re going to have a natural things in them. Grated cheese if stored in the refrigerator will mold. Well, if it doesn’t mold, there’s a reason why.

@@wendellsmith1349 I guess it really just comes down to what you find to be acceptable ingredients in your food items. I did look it up for myself & my opinion remains the same. I also learned that an alternative to cellulose is calcium sulfate, which is used in cement and tiles. I found it interesting that even with so many food allergies in this era, peanut or almond skins may still be used to make it. I wonder if people that suffer from digestive issues understand that cellulose is fiber & that it may affect their condition. I really think that people need more education about what is in their food & I think that Pam is bringing attention to it & giving us the knowledge, which enables each of us to make an educated decision about what we choose to eat. I have never felt that she is peddling fear. Another interesting area to research is how much funding the FDA receives from the pharmaceutical industry. Then a person can ask himself, "Who is receiving the greater benefit of pharmaceutical ingredients in my food?" but, like you, I would urge everyone to do their own research so they may make an educated decision based on their own personal values.

I quit buying shredded cheese years ago when a physician’s assistant told me about this as he was treating me for chronic conditions. I was amazed at how much better it tasted when I bought block cheese! And the same thing when I quit buying ‘short cut’ carrots. Regular carrots are so much better!!
Same here, I quit buying shredded cheese when I learned that they put a powdered coating on it to keep it from sticking together. It's not that hard to shred cheese and it tastes much better.
Baby carrots are actually normal-sized carrots shredded to be small, & then the shredded part is sold separately. Best carrots are those you grow yourself, & if ppl want, they can even grow them inside cloth grocery bags - you can grow potatoes in those, too. There are lots of things, in fact, that ppl can grow w/o having large gardens, whether inside, or on an apt balcony. I think more & more ppl will be growing more of their own food as things become unhealthier. A pack of seeds for $2 can save $100s after just 1 season, & you can pressure can/water bath what you don't choose to eat right away, & you'll have garden-fresh food year-round! I discovered canning 2yrs ago on YT, & it's amazing how much better food tastes when it's 100% natural! I wish we could grow everything we eat!

It is just an antifungal agent, which is non toxic with no harmful side effects unless you're allergic to it. That's why they use it to treat fungal infections of the eye...the eye is a delicate thing and you can't just pour anything into it, lol. I woukd assume the reason why it's prescribed and not over the counter is because you need a doctor to confirm that you have a fungal infection, otherwise there's no purpose in using it. If you don't want your home shredded cheese clumping, then you can add a small amount of corn starch into the storage container then gently stir or shake the cheese to coat it. If you want to keep any excess moisture out then you can use a silica packet like the ones found in packages of beef jerky or make homemade packets by mixing ground charcoal, tapioca starch and or ground flax seed and salt and place the mixture inside an empty tea bag or coffee filter. I'm sure there are other ingredients and methods that can be used to prevent clumping and excess moisture buildup but these are the common ones that I've seen used.

Powdered cellulose is a common additive in shredded cheese to prevent clumping. It's a plant-based substance often derived from wood pulp, but it's not the same as having actual wood chips in the cheese. It's used as an anti-caking agent.
Indeed, not only in “wood chips” but cellulose is more commonly known as “fibre”. The skin on fruits and vegetables is made from cellulose and it performs a very important job in the gut that regulates the absorption of glycogen. Also the nananycin is a perfectly safe natural preservative.

This video is a great eye opener for people that when we hear "processed food" processing can be simply shredding and adding adjuncts to extend the shelf life of food. One of the first things we learn as a chef is to wait until the last second to shred the cheese, because the more surface area of a food the faster it oxidizes. Shredding cheese increases the surface area by thousands of percent, heavily affecting flavor and freshness, so they have to add all that crap that keeps it looking fresh even though it isnt.

Natamycin is a type of antifungal stuff often used in making certain cheeses that have a rind. It stops mold from growing on the cheese, so it lasts longer. It's safe to eat, and food authorities keep an eye on how much is used to make sure it's okay. Using it in the right amounts won't cause health issues.
WHOA! I had no idea! Thank you so much for the knowledge today! My hubby used to grate our cheese years ago rather than buy these premade ones, though I never knew why. But it does taste better and doesn't feel 'plasticy' like the premade cheese does, anyway. It's about time we go back to the block cheese.
Thank you for bringing this to our attention. What I find works really well with my shredded cheese, is to get the produce /vegetable ziplock bags. They are perforated and prevent the cheese from forming moisture in the bag, going on moulding. Even more so when I freeze my cheese after shredding it. Enjoy your cooking.

Thanks Pam! I generally don't buy the pre shredded cheese because they charge more for it, but also I'm finding slices work just fine, even on pizza or in casseroles. So there's not much reason to dirty up a grater. (They're hard to clean. I've chopped blocks of cheese into tiny "slivers" to mimic shreds. That works too. Stick to blocks or slices.

I get recurrent infections so maybe that's why, most cases of 'lactose intolerance'
is NOT the real issue - it's the 'replenishing' of the good gut bacteria. Having been on antibiotics for long stretches, a month or more - I fart like an old tractor!
I try to stay away from elevators - unfortunately - especially for appointments, I can't always do that!
Several years ago I was at home on my birthday and it was happening a lot when I was celebrating with some friends having a few beers, then I came up with a song, which I called 'The Fart Song' I'll tell you people were laughing - here's the first veres:

Baby carrots are actually normal-sized carrots shredded to be small, & then the shredded part is sold separately. Best carrots are those you grow yourself, & if ppl want, they can even grow them inside cloth grocery bags - you can grow potatoes in those, too. There are lots of things, in fact, that ppl can grow w/o having large gardens, whether inside, or on an apt balcony. I think more & more ppl will be growing more of their own food as things become unhealthier. Thank you, Pam. This was both scary and informative.
It’s unreal what is being passed off as food.
Why is it scary?
@@tazandalsoalastname Because people fear what they don't understand. If you convince two or three people in a crowded place to run screaming, many others will become terrified and flee with them without ever knowing what they're running from.
It's truly astonishing how, in these days when almost any information is right at our fingertips, most people are too inept to use the device they're on to verify claims made by random people online.
The trick is on this lady. Anything in the store has chemicals in it for you
@@trajectoryunownI just looked at the bag of cheese we have and Natamyicin was an ingredient. Googled it too.
Natacyn may cause serious side effects including:
hives,
difficulty breathing,
swelling of your face, lips, tongue, or throat,
vision changes,
eye redness or irritation,
swelling of the eye,
eye pain or numbness, and.
chest pain.
@@trajectoryunown I'm just genuinely curious as to why this idea scares people. It's not like anyone is trying to hide the fact that it's in there.
The lady in the video kept saying 'it's a prescribed drug" as if that were the scary thing, but I don't understand why that's a problem? It is just an antifungal agent, which is non toxic with no harmful side effects unless you're allergic to it. That's why they use it to treat fungal infections of the eye...the eye is a delicate thing and you can't just pour anything into it, lol. I woukd assume the reason why it's prescribed and not over the counter is because you need a doctor to confirm that you have a fungal infection, otherwise there's no purpose in using it.
I understand that there have been times, such as in the case of thalidomide, where a drug was thought to be safe and wasn't, but that is why more rigorous systems for testing have been put in place. Of course this is not foolproof, but I feel like it shouldn't be causing so much fear? Statistically, I should be spending my days terrified that I will die in a traffic accident rather than being terrified of cheese, but the idea of spending my life being scared of things that may theoretically happen seems exhausting.

I love you! I stopped using preshredded cheese because it didn’t get moldy - so I knew there was something. I never thought to look at the ingredients list.
Hi Pam, I just checked several bags of Kroger brand shredded cheese and could not find any mention of cellulose being used in the processes listed on the back of the bag. I did find Natamycin. This is what I found about this additive: Natamycin is a natural antimicrobial peptide produced by the strains of Streptomyces natalensis. It effectively acts as an antifungal preservative on various food products like yogurt, khoa, sausages, juices, wines, etc. Thank you for your information videos.
Sometimes things seem scary until we actually learn more about those things. Good work on your research👍!
So it's a natural microbial peptide.
@@swannoir7949 Keeping in mind that, "natural," does not mean always safe, or good for everyone. Arsenic is natural, and absolutely poison. The nightshade family of plants have both poisonous and safe to eat varieties. It can be difficult to decide, since America is far more lenient than many nations when it comes to food laws and additives. For instance, high fructose corn syrup is said to be quite unhealthy, yet we must make an effort to avoid it in our foods.
You're in the 1% that will actually look it up for themselves to find out it's harmless.
@@totalbullion5882 I'm all for educating oneself, but how does using different words to describe the same thing make it "harmless"? He didn't disprove anything from the video.
You do know that corn starch is used in the manufacturing of glue and bioplastics...who on earth would want that in their food?!?
But corn starch, is from CORN. As in a plant from the ground, and is edible. We all eat corn.
@@Aurora9990 and you do realize that cell walls of ALL plants contain cellulose...I assume you eat plants...?
@@Aurora9990 Corn Starch will clog and block your bowels. Have you ever seen cornstarch and water to make OObleck? That will clog your plumbing and it is advised to never pour down the drain. Dangerous. And they use them as fillers in supplements.

I thought you were going to say it's more affordable to shred your own. Which it truly is. But thank you again for sharing your wisdom ❤

Good grief!! I had no idea they were putting a medication in the shredded cheese. I don't use it all that often but I do have some older stuff in the freezer to use. Thank you so much for these helpful updates, Pam.
