Yes and no.
The Soninke had a merchant caste spread all through West Africa.
We known that caste as a ethnic group today called: Wangara.
The Soninke Wangara and the Mandinka caste called Dyula later fused. And nowadays their mixed progeny are known primarily as the Dyula.
The Soninke had three primary goldmines. One being in Ghana today, which is the reason there are Mande speakers in that country.
That's the basis for the link between ancient Ghana/Wagadu and modern Ghana.
