    This is actually a interesting idea. A rom of a unfinished game and using save states to see the game and having the dev logs to see and how they were fighting. Good video man.

    the eyeball ending of the rom is one of the few representations ive ever seen of how helpless anyone would be against a mythical beast that can kill just by looking at you. i suppose the red sword is meant to be the precursor to the sepent tooth sword. is the knight you meet at the end supposed to be someone else, or the player characters reflection? is the demo scene presaging david turning on his coworkers? perhaps david believed he was protecting the world from exposure to a cursed game

    The guy without the shirt who says his shirt was stolen is a Morrowind reference

    Something I found interesting is the parallels between the ending cutscene of Basilisk 2000 and Clive's story about the “wicked king of rats” in Lunacid- which itself is a reference to Sotiris, a major enemy from one of Kira's other games, Lost in Vivo.
    The cutscene states that “…the true cure [for the famine] lay guarded behind a tyrant's walls.” And the king of Mycenae Castle (with a Dark of 100%) appears to have been slain by his own knights, although he may not be the same king.
    Clive's story about the “wicked king of rats” (Sotiris) says that “…long ago during the first age of magic a witch king ruled in a starving kingdom,” and that he “…withheld the castle's bountiful provisions and let his kingdom wither.” His knights eventually betrayed him for his cruelty, and threw him into the Great Well Lunacid takes place in after cutting off an arm and gouging out his eyes.
    It probably isn't a coincidence, but I'm also not sure if it's supposed to be the same story. One of Clive's other stories is a more direct reference to the Basilisk games, though it's interesting to note he can't remember much of it. The world of Basilisk is also implied to have once existed in Lunacid's setting, based on the description of a weapon taken directly from Basilisk 2000. Another interesting thing about Basilisk is that there is no apparent lore for Bayagototh, a character Kira has been hiding information about in their games since Lost in Vivo. There is almost certainly some connection between Basilisk and the rest of Kira's games, but it’s not quite clear what it is at the moment.

    6:12 I was curious about the text on the bottom of the disc, so on a lark I threw it in a caesar cipher solver and ended up with "SECRETS WITHIN / NOT HERE"
    Good one lol

    Great deep dive here, Basilisk is a very unique and cool project and it was cool seeing all of this lore that might be difficult for a more casual fan to see in its entirety. Gotta say though I think it's just a *little* weird to create one of the programmer characters as apparently based off a real person Kira didn't get along with... and have them be the victim of a workplace shooting and even imply they kind of deserved it.

    I just learned about these games a few days ago, completed them, and was hoping someone had done a lore analysis but hardly any commentary about this game online. Great video! Hoping this game kicks off at some point and receives more exposure, great concept for a horror title with a wonderful execution.

    I feel like Cursed Knight Suscarius and his serpent men underlings in lunacid are also somewhat of a reference, as they all are stated to be under the curse of the serpent and, much like the cursed people in Basilisk 2000, have serpentine heads

    • @doctordirck
      @doctordirck  Před 9 měsíci +4

      It's worth looking into. I've now had a couple requests to look into Lunacid now that it's 1.0 and I have played and almost 100%ed the game but I still am looking into it to see what I think of the stuff in it. I plan on covering most of the Kiraverse at some time and Sucsarius has something going on with the other curse-bearers mentioned in some note. Your thoughts are appreciated.

      @@doctordirck There are two other Basilisk 2000 weapons in Lunacid: a weapon found in a secret area can be upgraded into Saint Ishii, which is the Blood Sword, and a *really* hidden weapon called the Axe of Harming is the Placeholder Axe but textured.

    • @doctordirck
      @doctordirck  Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@ethanmiller3200 I saw that over the next couple of weeks as more details came out and I had more time to ruminate on it. The Serpent's fang was only included like 15 minutes before I called this video finished just because I happened to run into it while I was playing Lunacid while taking a break between editing. There's text for those weapons but unfortunately Axe of Harming doesn't have any relevant text and Saint Ishii I'm not able to draw any concrete conclusions about. Someone else smarter than me has to tackle that one. Realistically we'll have to wait on more info about Saint Ishii in the next game.

    I just finished these and have been obsessed. Didn't know about the alpha .smc converting to a .jpg yet -- that's a cool detail. I will say: I don't think the usage of the word "transients" is a literal reference to homeless people. I think it's referring to the developers brought in to work on the games (maybe specifically the Basilisk games, or maybe any of the games that might have been being made in that building during that time). I like the interpretation of the metaphor of the Basilisk being creative pursuit, the desire for perfection, entropy -- that it's chewing up and spitting out anyone who works on it. Figuratively and literally grafting parts of them to itself.

    • @doctordirck
      @doctordirck  Před 7 měsíci +2

      Thank you for your comment. I have to say that's a very well thought out argument for it not being homeless and it being developers instead. Maybe the reason nobody who worked on the first Basilisk also worked on Basilisk 2000 was because they were all dead. Of course except for one. It's something to think about, maybe one day when we get the steam release with the promised new content we might get an answer. Very good comment.

    Greg’s darkness is high because that’s Akuma Kira’s real name

      It's a thought, but here's a few images referencing Greg's naming inspiration. That's why at the end of this video I'm like "Well I hope they weren't just giving them 100% darkness to be petty."

    I like to headcanon that the reason the serpent monsters only have 80% darkness is that while they are naturally evil, they do have the capacity for good.

Thank you earnestly for making me re-look at what I said.
