    Most turtles actively seek out their prey, but the knobby shelled mata mata lies in wait in shallow, muddy water, using its remarkable camouflage to avoid being seen. Its eyes - set in a triangular head - are small, but it has large external eardrums and sensory skin flaps that help to detect moving prey. It also has a snorkel-like nose, which allows it to breathe without rising to the surface.Female mata matas lay up to 28 eggs in a single nesting.

    I’ve been confused why it looked like a leaf. Until now…

    • @HaizeyWings
      @HaizeyWings Před 9 měsíci +2

      If an animal looks like a leaf or stick or other object found in its habitat, you can assume it's to either hide from predators, or hide to catch unsuspecting prey :)

    • @1MinuteAnimals

      Absolutely! 🐢🍽 Once the Mata Mata turtle swallows its prey, it's treated to a gastric juice cocktail for digestion.

      @@childrentastegood9 I know they don't have teeth but they have a sharp beak and a powerful bite force. I know they're not the same species but I've got a yellow bellied slider nearly the size of a dinner plate and he has a nasty bite even though his head, neck and mouth are nowhere near the size of mata mata turtles
