  • The most noticeable feature of a tortoise is its massive shell. But what happens if you touch it? Caretakers at Smithsonian's National Zoo fill us in.

They are truly amazing creatures. I have my late mother’s tortoise, (I think Greek but not sure, ) called Rover . He could be 50 years of age. He’s highly intelligent, loves visitors, is a fussy eater, dead lazy, but most of all, his party trick is to push my wheeled garden seat around the lawn until it reaches an obstruction; he then gets underneath it and scratches his shell. He is yet to find a way to turn the seat around, but I’m sure he’s working on it .

Tortoises are capable of tucking their heads in their shell if distressed, annoyed, or not liking the feel of something so at the very least they're okay with being touched. How much they like/dislike/are neutral to touching we may never know because as reptiles, they lack facial features capable of most facial expressions so for all we know, they're laughing at us for being weird.

@@joshuakim5240 Very true, however! Animals that *lean into* touch stimulation often find some sort of satisfaction from the action being dealt to them. An example is a news sensation sphinx cat who gets eye socket scratches. The cat lost the eyes due to extensive medical issues and they couldn't be saved. In videos released by the owner, the cat notably leans into the gentle scritches from its owner. Many commenters have said "that cat probably doesn't like you putting your finger there! this is abuse!"- but if the cat didn't like it well... it would've moved or otherwise been vocal.

If you're asking yourself why do turtoise extend their necks when being touched even though in nature no animal would simply caress a turtoise, it's because some birds eat parasites that live in the turtoise skin, so when they felt the birds walking, they would extend the biggest portion of their soft skin (their necks) so the birds could find the parasites faster.
