I had no idea they could feel through their shells. It's fun to learn.
I like to think of the shell as a big fingernail or toenail.
Made from the same material, Keratin.
Touching your own nails, you can imagine what it must feel like for the Tortoise to be touched on the shell.

Right, i always thought it was like a hermit crab in their shells and won't feel anything.
I think in general, the harder it is for a animal to scratch a certain spot, the more it it's gonna appreciate when someone else does. I bet if you slowly scratch his neck upwards he would purr like a kitten.

They are truly amazing creatures. I have my late mother’s tortoise, (I think Greek but not sure, ) called Rover . He could be 50 years of age. He’s highly intelligent, loves visitors, is a fussy eater, dead lazy, but most of all, his party trick is to push my wheeled garden seat around the lawn until it reaches an obstruction; he then gets underneath it and scratches his shell. He is yet to find a way to turn the seat around, but I’m sure he’s working on it .
I love this! Rover sounds wonderful. I used to have a yellow bellied slider named Bowser. We kept his aquarium in the same room as our bunny. My husband used to play tag with the bunny, and Bowser would swim back and forth to follow the direction they were running in.

Tortoises are capable of tucking their heads in their shell if distressed, annoyed, or not liking the feel of something so at the very least they're okay with being touched. How much they like/dislike/are neutral to touching we may never know because as reptiles, they lack facial features capable of most facial expressions so for all we know, they're laughing at us for being weird.
@@joshuakim5240 Very true, however! Animals that *lean into* touch stimulation often find some sort of satisfaction from the action being dealt to them. An example is a news sensation sphinx cat who gets eye socket scratches. The cat lost the eyes due to extensive medical issues and they couldn't be saved. In videos released by the owner, the cat notably leans into the gentle scritches from its owner. Many commenters have said "that cat probably doesn't like you putting your finger there! this is abuse!"- but if the cat didn't like it well... it would've moved or otherwise been vocal.

+The King of the Penguins That's what happens to me when I finally convince a woman to go on a date with me. It's completely foreign and unknown because it almost never happens, but then I realize it's awesome, like you said, LOL.
+The King of the Penguins I think that they may feel similar things in the wild. Notice that they're rubbing the outstretched neck. They can rub their neck on a tree or rock in the wild if they want, and mating pairs may rub necks sometimes too, I'm not sure.
It's like, most cats like to be pet most on the sides of their face and neck, where they usually rub other things, and that's usually how they greet each other too, by bopping and rubbing heads with each other.
+Charles Darwin Mmmmm, does your mum know your doing that Charlie. :-/
I had a pet turtle when I was In high school. It would try to get me to pet its neck and usually wanted my body heat on its skin. It surprised people how much it wanted to be pet and how easily it let strangers hold it and warm it like a heat rock.

If you're asking yourself why do turtoise extend their necks when being touched even though in nature no animal would simply caress a turtoise, it's because some birds eat parasites that live in the turtoise skin, so when they felt the birds walking, they would extend the biggest portion of their soft skin (their necks) so the birds could find the parasites faster.
Ohhh I thought my tortoises likes me,, she’s just trynna get rid of non-existing parasites
