- Southern Death Cult live Newcastle, England, January 21st 1983, recorded from analogue terrestrial broadcast, using a Sony C6 MK1 betamax VCR and Sony videotape. tape archive number 0002
Southern Death Cult were a British post-punk/gothic rock band that formed in Bradford during the early 1980s. They are now primarily known for having given their lead vocalist and parts of the name to the multi-platinum hard rock band the Cult. Despite the similarities in the names, "Southern Death Cult" were distinct from "Death Cult" & "the Cult".

I went to see them at The Old Bell in Derby on this tour . . The buggers didn’t turn up!
I love this. Thanks for sharing! Early tribal goth is the best. I have their one album original pressing and it’s great. Been a fan since the 80s. I love when they shortened to just Death Cult as well. And of course the CULT is awesome. But I never saw live early footage like this until now. Great stuff in a magical transformative time for music.
So young, so much energy.
Reminds me a bit of what The Pop Group were doing with fragmented funk mixed with a punk 'tude. Is interesting to see Ian Astbury going through his art-school phase, smiling even, before settling into the frontman with the Thousand Yard Stare schtick that he's known for. Nice to see lads working it out on TV; the 80's were much more of a tolerant time in places that weren't MTV.
Great to see this.
I used to watch The Tube back in the day. Never saw this.
Great quality. Thanks for your hard work. Cheers.
The bass player is really good.
That's Barry, who went on to Getting the Fear (as did the rest of the band) and then surpassed that with the excellent Into a Circle.
I had that 7" single when it came out. I've found it impossible to find a performance of it online. Thanks you!
This is probably the best quality version I've seen of this footage. Thanks, ScottishTeeVee. Barry, in particular, always looked great, with playing to match. If any here don't know his work with Getting the Fear (basically SDC with Bee on vocals) and especially Into a Circle (likewise with Bee), I urge you to check it out.
Thank you am 55 going on fourteen and never saw sdc dc but saw later versions heard them on John peel/annie nightingale and wished was older 😀😀
Some energy, superb Stevee and SDC. The Tube again👏🏻👏🏻Incidentally hope Craig is ok
I LOVE this - loved the "chart fact" too!! LOL!!!
Ooooooh wooowwwww fantastic!!! Thank you só much!!! What a treat❤️🌷🌷🌷from Holland
They were a brilliant Goth band shame they wasn't together long & only did one single & not an album etc
They became death cult, the cult, I saw them in Bradford Interchange often getting their bus.
@@breakit46 no they become Death Cult SDC split up Ian formed Death Cult with Billy Duffy & Nigel Preston both ex Theatre of Hate & Jamie Stewart ex Ritual guitarist on Bass They dropped the Death part of their name & became just the Cult about 20min before they played on the Tube tv show
@@Colin-ro6lh that is what i said
@@breakit46 no its not at all
@@Colin-ro6lh I have better things to do that split hairs, Billy, Ian, from SDC to DC to TC. Now stop it. I spoke to them in The Cult at Leeds Warehouse, I was there mate.
just post punk also rans till Billy came along
WOW great footage, so in your face, powerful and highlights the great musicianship, one of the best pieces of historical music tv appearences ive seen, love it.
So much better than what they became
bollocks this is rubbish
Whoa!..what a show ⚡🎶💥
It was a good year
Ah, I'd forgotten about the Turkey Stomper dancing style of their fans
Timeless sound from the band
A cross of the cult, adam ant, and u2 in the key of the 80's
Great footage, great sound!
cool...very cool...
Ian Astbury ? 🤣😂🤣🍩
The era when this went out on national telly at 7pm 🤩
Show 🤘🤘🎸🎸🎸
Is this the only other band in the Ant Music genre?
(It’s a joke, don’t overreact.)
this is fucking awesome
Sounds like a “Flock of Sister Seagulls of Mercy..”. Ian’s got a cool “Apache Shaman Boy George” vibe. Does he have a Crackerjack tattoo on his right arm.
The indi Cult..
He should have used an angle-jack on the guitar, it’s an accident waiting to happen 🤣 or maybe that’s anarchy MKii ?
Slightly early U2.
They had such a cool look, I am curious if anyone knows what happened to the rest of the band members? We know where Ian is of course
They all went on to form Getting the Fear, with Bee (Paul Hampshire) on vocals. Barry, the bass player, then founded the excellent Into a Circle, also with Bee. Barry spent time in music management and teaching, and I got to see him at an Into a Circle reunion gig in London in 2022. Aki, the drummer, had a well-regarded project called Fun-da-Mental in the '90s. As for Buzz, the guitarist, I'm not sure... .
Asbury so coked up it's scary.
Thankfully, they left the south and became born.
The Myriad faces of The Cult.
They would become a different band by 85.
That was really bad!! :D
yeah❗️you are right
I agreeee with U❗️
Adam Ant wannabe with no talent? Zzzz
"Crappy"if U ask me,THE CULT later was much better...!😂
This was postpunk/goth, which the Cult weren't, they turned into a plain metal band.
Adam and the ants , anyone??
This is terrible - kind of every no hope band sound of all the no hope bands I was in back then lol - you can hear sanctuary in the guy's voice though
