  • These commercials aired on KPTV in November and December of 1980
    1. Big Zoom Stunt Plane (But what is it called?)
    2. Matchbox Super Garage (With Eric Gurry)
    3. TV Spot for "Song Of The South" (It's very rare to see any advertising for this. I wish they'd just release it on Blu Ray as a limited release for collectors and slap a bunch of warnings on it instead of just pretending it doesn't exist)
    4. Speidel Ident Bracelet
    5. Bank Shot (With Ian Ziering)
    6. Great American Furniture Co. (I love the disco Christmas synth music in the background)
    7. Potterycraft Potter's Wheel
    8. Promo for "The Nutty Professor"
    9. Toys R Us
    10. McDonald's (With 1981 Coloring Fun Calendar)
    11. M&M's
    12. B&L Furniture
    13. Promo for "Timbers Vs. Earthquakes" (All information I can find is that the soccer season ended in August...but the contents of this tape are definitely from November-December. It's possible that this promo is a leftover snippet from an earlier recording that was later taped over?)
    14. Dazey Power Scrubber at Fred Meyer
    15. V-8
    16. Schick
    17. K-TEL The Magic of Abba
    18. Tom Peterson's
    19. Speedtrack Slipstream Racing
    20. Great American Furniture Co.
    21. K-TEL Rock 80
    22. Christmas Gifts at Kmart
    23. Promo for "Scrooge"
    24. Pillsbury Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough
    25. K-TEL Sound Waves (This compilation has some great tracks. "Tired Of Toein' The Line" is an awesome song: • Tired Of Toein' The Li... )
    26. Sun Shield
    27. AutoCup (Wow Ronco before "set it and forget it")
    28. Tarn-X (Partial)
    29. OSU Vs. Portland (This game was played 12/13/80)
    30. Great American Furniture Co.
    31. Jewelry at Meier & Frank
    32. Ronco Record Vacuum (Before I actually sat down and watched this compilation in full, I thought that maybe this was an upright portable record player like the Sony PS-F5: • Sony Linear Tracking T... . I just use a dry swiffer cleaning cloth to clean my records, they work great)
    33. Fred Meyer (I'm pretty sure we had that exact popcorn popper when I was a kid)
    34. Chewels Gum
    35. Atari 2600 Video Game System at Meier & Frank
    36. 60/40/20
    37. Certs
    38. Jantzen Beach Center (This was a large indoor mall that was later torn down in 1995)
    39. Promo for "Welcome Back Kotter"
    40. "Bugs Bunny And Friends" Intro (Apologies to those with sensitive ears or who are allergic to fart synthesizers)
    41. Cheerios
    42. Chutes And Ladders
    43. Sports Illustrated
    44. Peters Brothers Gresham Lighting (Partial)
    45. Kids Jeans at Meier & Frank
    46. K-TEL Rock 80

Mitt Romney is why Toys R Us went out of business. He's also the reason that KB Toys went out of business as well. His company, Bain Capital, buys companies with borrowed money, then makes the company pay the loan back. About 25% of the companies can't stand the burden of the additional debt and they go under. Sear's has been killed by similar practices. It's been sucked dry by the management company without caring about the workers or community.

Regardless of your opinion of the film, the fact that the first movie to have a black male actor win an academy award is completely unavailable for people to watch and is completely swept under the rug is a travesty.

After years of searching, I finally found the best official Japanese LD release, but it cost me. Now the same thing is happening to Gone With The Wind for the same reasons, also largely by people who have never seen it. And with no regard for Hattie McDaniel, who won an Academy Award for Best Supporting Actress, becoming the first African-American to win an Academy Award. Ah the days when a Microwave oven was a big ticket item. $299.99 would be relatively expensive for a microwave even in today’s time but in the 80’s that was equivalent to about $700. Funny to think that you can buy a microwave today for as little as 50 bucks. Technology really does get cheaper over the years.

It was cool seeing the commercial for indoor soccer. But the league the Timbers and Earthquakes were playing in at the time was the North American Soccer League (NASL). The NASL was a great outdoor soccer league that lasted from 1969-1984. They ran a professional indoor league from 79-82. The MISL was a separate league.

The smart thing to do would to let a label like Criterion release it with commentary tracks, bonus features etc and not as a mainstream release.

If you’re interested in Song of the South, the podcast “You Must Remember This” has a great six-episode series about it. Also, I’ve seen it and TBH it’s not a great movie. In addition to the mild racism, the live action segments are painfully boring.

    • @80sCommercialVault
      @80sCommercialVault  Před 4 lety +16

I don’t get how it’s even “mildly” racist. The smartest person in the movie is Uncle Remus. And the movie is set during reconstruction, not the antebellum period as is often incorrectly assumed.
I feel like most of the people who complain about the racial content have never actually seen it and are repeating stuff they’ve heard about it from other people who haven’t seen it, creating sort of an endless feedback loop of ignorance. Disney plays into it by not making the film accessible for people to watch and evaluate it for themselves.

    • @davidwages9176
      @davidwages9176 Před 4 lety +4

80sCommercialVault I agree that Disney, by locking the film away, has allowed it to be built up into this bigger deal than it really is. I think “racially insensitive” might be a better term for it than racist. It presents black people in the reconstruction era south as being perfectly happy continuing to work on a plantation for the white owners, which I believe is what most critics object to.
At any rate, racial elements aside, it’s just not Disney’s best work, and - again- I think the embargo of it has given it a reputation as a lost treasure that it doesn’t really deserve.
