"it's a honest cold" Love that.
This would be a 'behind the scenes' video - except you two, and this channel, are so open and transparent about what goes on, and that's what makes it real. Never change!
Can we talk about how beautiful UMA is sailing? And the backdrop is beyond words.
I agree, there is something majestic about a mono-hull heeled over under full sail in a rough sea.
A big Catamaran is just not the same.
NOPE... Can't talk about it. ONLY LOOK. Yep. NO TALKING.
I was just saying out loud what beautiful lines Uma has! Classic! You don't find that in the years that follow. And she was headed for the junkyard! What a #1 SAVE!
@@HappyBuddhaBoyd That is exactly what I was going to say!
Without a doubt!!
I just loved Kika's face when she finds out, "I'm catching the drone?" Nothing like riding a Bucking Bronco when trying to do repairs! Thank you for filming, editing, music, and sharing your video's! Stay Safe you Two!
kikas expression was priceless.
I could do without the Millennial whoop music, but otherwise this episode was brilliant. ; )
Technical nautical terminology with Kika.
‘Holy shit.’
Also, thank you so much for your ability to lay down background sound track at a level that doesn’t cause brain damage when wearing head phones.
Uma sure is pretty when she's under sail! Some of the best footage of Uma ever. You two have a beautiful vessel.
I’m a drone flyer myself as well and very impressed at how well y’all launch and retrieve the drones while in motion. People that don’t fly can’t comprehend how difficult that stunt is to complete. Extremely impressed!! Sails Up!!
Lol I was gritting my teeth nearly through the whole drone portion of this episode.
yeah i dont want to catch my mavic standing on level ground let alone on a moving boat, i even considered buying an older phantom just to fly and catch solo on my dingy, but still, not at 6 kts
This is incredibly hard yet was made to look so simple. I watched the catch 3 times. I have experience flying drones and wish to warn people of doing this if they aren’t highly confident.
It would probably actually be easier to match speeds in acro mode but that means flying it like a helicopter which is a skill some little can take years to learn.

Tom The Expert Drone Pilot seems a pretty darned cool guy! I like him, you can have him back anytime you like. The video comparison and comments about each drone were fascinating! I shall have to watch this several times to absorb it all
They AA are in the Faroe isle at the moment and heading for Iceland and then Greenland in the spring.
Hello Dan and Kiki. You folks are truly an inspiration for anyone trying to venture out ….. I was introduced to your site by a neighbour and avid sailor …. I have binge watched your videos and have watched the first 135 episodes in less than 3 weeks …. Being retired and in Canada at this time what a great way to spend ones time …. Dan watching all that you have accomplished, to me you are truly the “ ” and Kiki you are the “” …. Carry on.
I have been watching your channel for years! Every time I want to escape daily nonsense of useless noise I immerse myself into your travels. 🥂. Thanks 😊
Newbie here, just finished binge and current with all videos. The thirst is insatiable. Thank you for the education and fun you provide.
I got caught up recently also. What an amazing voyage. Truly a cut above the rest.
I am a long time DJI drone pilot, so when I say this was some of the greatest action drone footage, I know what I am saying. Well done and as always well edited! You guys rock!!💥🧨💥
I know! Im so interested in doing nice big drone shots, and videos like these are helpful. What would you recommend from your experience?
@@thatoceanvibe2058 I suggest any of the Mavic family of DJI drones.
Glad to get drone lessons from a boat.. I fly drones but not from a boat so this was especially interesting to me, the more so because of how realistic the sailing cinematography comes across. Good job, as usual. Drone photography really enhances sailing videos.
Remember the most
We are in the house thank godess that the best paying company has ever and then
you umyex
I love the closing drone shot at the end where the shot widens and then you see the glacier in the back. Breathtaking!
Maintenance of the boat is also interesting. Maybe some behind scenes video about boring every day duties? Up to now, I thought, that you prepared your boat so perfectly, that you don’t need to make any small repairs or changes :) Great footages of Uma and Svalbard. I wish I go to there sometime in the future. Cheers from Poland.
Love the "honest cold" comment, spent 2 years in Holland ship yards & that cold was like the UK dishonest.
With Dans engineering & architectural skills it's a wonder he hasn't come up with a drone catching/landing station ... or is that the next episode ? Stay Safe & Fair Winds !!
I'm so proud of you two. Bold and daring you are. 78 degrees N...wow
I was surprised how healed over Uma was on the sail killer job flying the drones you guys made it look so easy when in fact it is super difficult to pull off what you where doing Great job that dock floating around was friggin scary big time thanks for the lesson on drones as well.
I believe sailing up there has helped your sailing tremendously. You now carry quite a bit of sail, you have it set up good, a decent bit of heal without white knuckleing it.
Yeah for sailing! This episode made me, once again, realize how much I love watching sailing footage.
Thank you!
What an an amazing & raw part of the world. Loved the sailing drone footage. What an adventure you guys are having, thanks for sharing.
What a GREAT video on how to use a drone from a moving boat! I’ve seen so many “fail” drone videos where operators do it wrong, and with very expensive consequences. You guys covered the bases, and I like that whoever is the catcher wears protective gloves.
In general though, bigger drones can handle the wind much better, and sport mode should be used only to catch up. I would suggest that you recalibrate the compass away from anything metal though, especially when you travel to different locations. It’s a pain in the neck, but will save you from one of those expensive malfunctions.
One other suggestion. DJI drones, especially the newer ones, have pre-programmed flight programs. The one that I have in mind is “orbit”. I’ve used this program on stationary subjects and it’s great! It’ll orbit the subject and keep it centered. If it does the same thing for your boat the results would be fantastic!
Guys that's epic great shots of Uma sailing. Def Legendary!
The drone footage of Uma sailing is epic!
Some awesome shots of Uma doing what she does best. Love it
Beautiful, and successful!
I "saw" the short stint in your Live Tracking, thinking of a casual Patreon ride. The action here shows a hotter, thrilling adventure in the cold Arctic. Well done!
Great video! Again! You got some awesome shots with the drone. UMA looks incredible under full sail. Loved the lesson in flying and catching the drone from a moving boat. As always I super love watching your sail handling.
Best channel for actual sailing footage!
Thank you for the good instruction of drones life at sea! Will try for the summer, are so excited.
What a beautifull sailing with all the sails up!
I enjoy you guys so much. You're simply very nice people. Thank you for sharing your life with us.
I really like the normal stuff about what it takes to live on a boat. Keep up the good work 😊
It's super interesting watching you guys grow your skills, looking for every little bit of better. It's definitely working . There's days we can almost feel the wind and the cold on our faces, feel the roll and suck in the clean, crisp air.
Thanks for this one. Love the drone tips and insights.
Great video! Well done flying the drones and great work fixing the sail! Great to see Uma sailing so well in such a spectacular location! Thanks for showing us all of this!
Did I miss something? Did they tear a sail?
Very helpful tips from your ‘Expert’. Good that Kika feels more comfortable catching them at the back.
Great decision on the link between drone flying and boats. There is some useful information to be gleaned from this video. Thanks!!!
Always thought your cinematography was amazing and I think a large part of it is because of your drone shots, keep up the good work! LOVE ITT!❤️
Epic drone shots! More of that please.
You truly have the most interesting videos and I spend most of my viewing time watching the two of you. Thank you for the way you give information about all you experience.
Geeezzz Louise!!! The boat’s a Rockin’ despite the dockin’!! 😂 LOL!
Interesting dock you are tied to, looks like it is all high pressure poly pipe construction. another great vid guys thank you
Wonderful segment, thank You
Hi guys just wonderful to see Uma from the air , Looks like you guys are having a lot of fun love the videos keep up the hard work Cliff from Logan City Queensland Australia
Great action when you first left the harbour, love to sail in good wind, keep them coming, great vlogs always, Tc stay safe.
Great for the lesson, great that you met Skip Novak's boat, cheers. Thanks.
You always have great music as well!
great shots of uma from the drone.
you never fail to deliver , thanks
What a fantastic catch! Wow!!!
Holy cow!!! Hang on y’all!! I can’t wait for every new episode, very thoughtfully filmed and edited!!!! BRAVO If your ever in Oklahoma we’ll hook you up!
I like watching that boat hull cutting through the water. It seems as if the sails are the correct size and trimmed well, and the hull shape efficient so that the boat easily powers through the waves and chop without stumbling or thrashing. Perhaps some of that perception comes from the minimal wake that is created also. Watching every week from Vancouver, BC.
Great clip guys - learned a lot thanks
UMA looks awesome!! great footage!
Wow …. What a relevant and information episode. You guys killed it this week!
Great episode - but - the drone video of the boat in full flight was stunning. Loved every second of the whole episode.
Great video. Thank you!
Great! Thanks for the tips and tricks 🙏👌👍
Always fun to watch, thanks.
Great idea to try out the drones while you are sailing around Svalbard, serving two purposes: drone school, and an additional record of your time in such a beautiful Arctic location, capturing the beauty of the surrounding mountains.
Awesome drone photos of Uma!
wow, the little drone shots were very good...
As an owner of both a Phantom 3 Pro and a Mavic Air 2, I totally agree with your comparison of the two platforms. Old school versus New school for sure.
Thanks for the Tips for lunching and Catching whilst under way. That V2 looks the Shaznick!.
Yeah that just raised my anxiety level and I'm a pretty chill guy. Lol. I literally just finished flying my Autel Evo around the lake looking for wild pigs. I don't even want to think about retrieving a drone from a sailboat haulling butt through semi choppy seas
That was awesome .. one cool catcher .
best sailing blog ever! u people can film someone sweeping the floor , still make it interesting! well done!
Great tips thanks heaps!
Simply majestic!!!
Great episode
Amazing drone video, well done guys, really enjoying your channel 👍👍👍
Very interesting to learn and understand the use of drones while sailing..quite a challenge with beautiful results. 👍👏👏⛵️⛵️⛵️💕
I've got the DJI mini 2 and so far it's been great. However, I'm always stationary. Flying from a moving platform is next level difficult. Hat's off on the catches, good job! I get nervous enough catching standing still. ha.
Wow. You are two seriously bad-ass sailors. You'll be 90 and telling your sailing stories of taking the first electric sailboat boat into Svalbard- in winter yet- and people will be saying, "You did what?" Wow. Just wow. This was amazing. Nice catching, Kika. Great, great drone shots.
Fantastic video. Lots of Love. Capt. Jack
Thanks That was vary enjoyable.
Great video!!!!
oh man..... nothin like a drone shot while sailing.......................... and the location. stunning
I've seen in SLV's videos before that they have a handle for the bottom of their mavics so you can catch it like a phantom. Maybe you could look into making one for your mavic air. It might make catching it a little easier.
That was interesting and Kika looks so much more safe. Okay, my grammar was off in that sentence, but oh well. I loved the drone shots with the boat healed over and really traveling. That was some awesome footage you got. Your friend was definitely an expert in showing you how to do it better.
Your spelling was off too - it's 'heeling' not 'healing' - but who cares? Your sentiment is exactly right, having something solid to grip on makes the action far more stable.
I am a new drone flyer and i really enjoy the DJI Mavic mini 2. I have always enjoyed your drone footage and look forward to learning to do some fun video memories.
Great video again, guys! Love the footage from all three drones, the light up there in in Svalbard is amazing. Seeing you guys race along at 6 or 6+ knots is quite a new view on Uma. You guys are probably sick of me "Droning" on and on, but look into the Rapido 40 or the Dragonfly. You'll have faster and smoother passages. It's a treat to be able to spend 20 minutes a week with you guys!
Yup. Trimarans are faster. But we don’t have one.
@@SailingUma I know that! As much as you liked sailing the Dazcat, you'd probably love the Rapido. You guys can probably arrange to sail one for a day - or a few days and do a review of it.
Finally Uma has been filmed running free across the waves - such a lovely sight! (The three of you too, of course ;)
I love the full sail scenes.
Another Great Video.
Roll that beautiful drone footage😄😄. Great video!
Holy cow!!! That's rocking.
Yep. When those two are rocking in the rest home they
will just sit back, smile and reminisce.
Just heard you say "Should get one of those Palms" meaning a sailmakers' palm. I have been working on sails and rigs (not full time, but enough) to believe that having the right tools is key to a good job and making your tools all last. So why a Sailmakers Palm for pushing the needle through the many layers of webbing, using plyers to push and pull the needle through puts markings on the needle which makes it snag and harder to push through! Also as you have found can also result inbreaking the needle!
Thoroughly enjoy your videos, and interested to see how the full electric system works on extended cruise.
Only Kika & Dan could come up with the brilliant/wild/daring (you chose) idea of a tech review of drone IA and capture where 'ONLY' stands for *tacking Uma in 15 knots Arctic wind and bumpy sea!*
Kika is definitely the star of this show. You all are always bettering your game and sharing it with the patience of Sherlock Holmes. At least on screen. Your floating stage is always pristine. One day I’ll be a patreon
Wow, wow, wow you gave me such a biz seeing your baby sailing at such a heal from the air. Really spectacular.
This is helpful. Thanks guys.
Working on a boat in a unprotected harbour is a challenge indeed ... but yay for multitools.
Catching a drone during windy conditions, keeled at 45% at 6 knots....at sea. Peace of cake for Kika! Nice flying Dan.
Good catch!
My late wife and I and 2 of our kids lived 2 blocks from Riverside Marina in Ft Pierce until 2012. Loved to sit on the seawall and watch the manatees.
I am enjoying your many adventure videos including your detailed commentaries that only very few people could accomplish in a lifetime, taking the risk of using a 50year old boat and refurbishing it to be a practical version of your ideas, if you ever sail to Perth WA I would love to meet you (if you remember back to 1983 the Freemantle Yacht Club rested the America's cup from the NY Yacht Club)
Regards, Peter
Woaaaa Vinson! What a coincidence. Love that boat (also yours) 😊
Beautiful video. Drone tech has noticeably improved over time. Think about maybe eye protection for launch and retrieval.
I have a Phantom 3 which definitely wanders around. I just got a Mavic Mini but don't have experience with it yet. Just from the perspective of not taking up so much space means it will get used more. The Phantom is much easier to grab out of the air with the landing legs
I really like experiencing Svalbard without the drama - Cool it is just a place where people work, live, and play. Loved the tracking system video too. I do pretty well with my Mavic mini but it is very light for all but fairly gentle winds. Easy to catch though. I definitely think Kika should do a Svalbard silks with her offshore gear on. LOL
