  • In this weeks episode I share my experience with the Night Trains in Europe. I am travelling from Rome (Italy) to Vienna (Austria) in a 6 bed sleeper train (2nd Class). This is a solo backpacking trip through Europe using the Eurrail/Interrail pass. I document if the trains are safe to ride alone.

    Thanks for another great train trip report on CZcams! On night trains it's usually possible to book a couchette (the class of accommodation you traveled in here) in a women-only compartment. Sleepers (the higher class with proper beds and at least a sink in every compartment) are usually separated by sex unless you book a private compartment.

    Don't let that difficulty sleeping keep you from taking night trains. I roved Europe for three months, leaning heavily on night trains to save money and time. I interrupted that with occasional visits to friends outside Paris, sleeping in their home. The first couple of nights back on the rails after that quiet, I often had trouble sleeping. Trains are noisy and bounce around. But after that, I adjusted and slept well.
    That said, creeps are a problem for women, particularly on night trains. Boarding a night train in the south of Spain, I met a couple of young American women who had canes attached to their packs. Since both seemed healthy, I wondered why. They soon told me. The night before their train had been crowded with males so grabby, the conductor sat with them to keep the jerks off. Those canes were for protection of sorts.
    Fortunately, our night train was almost empty, so I left them in a compartment to themselves. They needed to catch up on missed sleep without guys around. But I told them that if any man entered their compartment, to bang on the wall of between us and I would come over.
    I had similar experiences as I traveled, so much so I found it amusing. Women travelers, usually in pairs rather than solo, would watch me for a few minutes, decide I was safe, and then pair off for travel together. They were quite grateful that their troubles ended with me around. The reason was simple. Most creeps are cowards. My mere presence kept them away. And the creeps were right to stay away. If they'd tried anything, I would have enjoyed inflicting sudden pain on them. When it comes to women, men tend to be heroes, wusses, and creeps. I intended to be a hero.
    Later in my travels I spent several weeks in a $1/night private hostel in the Old City of Jerusalem that was filled with hard-core, low-budget travelers. Quite a few of the women had paired off for their travels in just-friends relationships with men. My sense was that those men liked having someone to be responsible for and the women liked having a man doing that. It spared the women the kind of fretting you discuss in this video.
    If male/female differences interest you, read my book, _Embarrass Less._ It is written for hospital staff based on my experiences caring for teen boys and girls at a major children's hospital. Their post-puberty differences under the stresses of hospitalization were so great, I compare them to going from sunny Rome (a multi-bed girls room) to dour Berlin (the boys room). I got along great with the girls because they could see I was looking out for them. The boys were perpetually grumpy because they wanted to be treated as men and hospitals expect patients to be "compliant," particularly children's hospitals.

    For what its worth I seem to remember there is a supermarket connected to Roma Termini. But it cant be reached from within the (huge) terminal. You have to walk along (the northern?!) side of it. I found it one day approaching Termini from the "wrong" side. Which was good since I was going to the coast for a swim in thje ocean and also needed snacks and water for the day =)

    • @Inkling777
      @Inkling777 Před rokem

      Snoring is a big downside of staying in hostels-that and those who come in late and drunk, turning the lights and fiddling in their packs. Partial fixes include: (1) Getting a room with fewer people or one with an early curfew. (2) Covering your eyes and having either earplugs or a noise-cancelling headset. That doesn't help much though.
      I can recall one situation where I forgot politeness and told the troublemaker to "turn out the light and get to bed." Whether he understood English or not, he got my point.
      FYI: I snore and if I am, I don't mind if someone shakes me or turns me to make me stop. I don''t want to ruin your sleep.

      Yes, that's how it works, reservations, especially for night trains, are not included in Interrail passes and need to be booked separately on the side. A reservation for just a seat would be much cheeper and one for a double or single sleeper much higher.

    • @Inkling777
      @Inkling777 Před rokem +1

      If you're torn between buying 1st and 2nd class passes, keep in mind some of the benefits of 1st over 2nd. It is a bit like that on airlines. (1) Less crowding, typically 3-1 seating across an aisle rather than 2-2. (2) Seats in 1st may tilt back further, making napping easier. (3) More WiFi and power outlets-one for each per seat versus for each two seats. (4) Some additional benefits, such as free snacks. (5) On crowded trains, having a 1st class pass means you can travel either 1st or 2nd class, whichever is the least crowded.
      I've ridden trains during rail strikes when the occupancy rules were ignored. Even standing room was a premium. On one Brussels-to-Paris train the only place I found enough room _to sit on the floor_ was bouncing around at the very back of the very last car. Crowding is the train equivalent of traffic jams on highways. It can be very miserable.
      One more. Years ago I roved Europe on a 1st class Eurail pass, often taking night trains. Some arrived early on a cold and damp morning-not the kind of weather to be out on the street. Having a 1st class pass let me get away with staying in the better 1st class lounge before going out. That said, I was never asked to show my pass/ticket in the 1st class lounge. You might get away with it otherwise. Just look like you belong.

      You must not be a woman or maybe you are a gentleman and not aware that the world is not safe for women- that we always have to be on guard. The world is not as safe for women in general because man have made it so. Many men in the world think it’s ok to abuse, touch, harass women because they think it’s their right. So, what she is saying is safety from MEN. To be able to go about without fear of being physically or emotionally abused.
