    Not a bad design for a simple circuit. The tempco of the transistor and diodes may actually be good, as it will turn off sooner at higher temperature, which may match the recommended voltage for charging. A zener is better but there is still the Vbe of the transistor. A much better design can be done with a small PIC, costing well under $1, which has internal comparators and voltage references.

    How does the circuit measures the battery voltage while its plugged to charger? The pcb will not see the battery voltage because its lower than charging voltage? When i plug in charger and measure the voltage at the battery terminals multimeter just shows charging voltage of 14.4V

    Using voltage to determine charge level for lead acid is not a proper indicator of its charge. Charging at constant voltage of roughly 2.4 volts per cell and limiting the current going into the battery at 10% to 30% of its rated capacity, then charging it at that rate until the current being taken by the battery falls down to about 3% of its rated capacity is the proper way to determine if the lead acid battery has a full charge. You can use your circuit but you need to add a current sense resistor and monitor the voltage across it to sense when the current has dropped to the proper voltage that represents the full charge current point of your specific battery's capacity.

    Don't lead acid batteries fail to come up to a full 12.5 Volts when they reach middle age? So using this with an older battery this might never shutoff and it will cook the battery.

    • @M-DIY
      @M-DIY Před 6 lety

      Noah Spurrier no sir, while charging every battery reaches 14.2-15 volts, in fact older batteries get charged quickly because they can't absorb a lot of current due to their decreasing capacity, so their voltage rises quickly.

      @UpcycleElectronics Před 7 lety

      *Scheme*
      skēm
      noun
      1. a large-scale systematic plan or arrangement for attaining some particular object or putting a particular idea into effect.
      -This is the odd definition that someone has probably taught in an English class somewhere. At least in American English, no one uses the word in this way. "Scheme" is used as a verb by most English speakers and it has a negative meaning.
      verb
      1. make plans, especially in a devious way or with intent to do something illegal or wrong.

    • @scottlaflair4995
      @scottlaflair4995 Před 7 lety +1

      The word may be technically correct but I have never heard it used to describe electrical circuits.
      noun
      1. a plan, design, or program of action to be followed; project.
      2. an underhand plot; intrigue.
      3. a visionary or impractical project.

      John Conrad
      I had no intention of "nit picking." My personal philosophy is to always try to improve myself and my skills. I hate when people avoid telling me I'm doing or saying something wrong. Like anybody, I don't want someone telling me every little mistake I make, but when that mistake is distracting from my objectives I expect people to kindly let me know what I'm doing wrong, and especially why it's wrong.

      @johnconrad5487 Před 7 lety +1

      DO NOT TRY THIS WITH LITHIUM.
      this is ok for car batteries. Lead acid batteries have a wide voltage range for charging. LiPo does not and it is a highly unstable battery to do short cuts with. This is not a precision circuit and the cut out voltage will change with temperature. it is ok for 12V car batteries.

    • @LeonMauntlan
      @LeonMauntlan Před 7 lety +1

      Don't take this circuit, use a special chip tp4056 for Li-ion

    • @johnconrad5487
      @johnconrad5487 Před 7 lety

      the relay contact resistance is very low and is not significant. LiPo requires very precise charging and this circuit is not precise. depending upon room temperature changes it may overcharge the battery which can cause it to explode and catch fire. that is why IC's specifically made for charging LiPO are used. The circuit is good enough for Lead-Acid batteries which have a very wide tolerance.

    Nice video, but the design is a BAD long term charging solution for a LA battery because the cut-off circuitry NEVER allows the batt to achieve a full saturation charge -- which would of course shorten the useful life of any LA battery.
    *The design lacks 2 charge circuits:*
    1. A full saturation charge circuit. CV must be held constant while CC
    drops to 3 to 5% of batt capacity--then cut-off should occur or a float
    charge circuit should be enabled (if desired).
    2. A float charge circuit. After a full saturation has been achieved,
    charging V should be decreased to ~13.2 to 13.5V to maintain a full
    charge on the batt.
    *The design lacks 2 temperature control circuits:*
    1. A safety cut-off circuit (for when a battery over heats)
    2. An auto-adjusting temp-voltage control circuit -- to auto-ajust the charge V as the temp changes.

      No... and neither did I call his circuit a battery charger. It is obviously part of a battery charging solution--and not a very good addition--as I quite clearly pointed out in my original comments.
      re: "Looks like you lost sight of the prime objective. "

    • @johnconrad5487
      @johnconrad5487 Před 7 lety +1

      yes u can use an op-amp instead of the transistor and it would work a lot better. in this case he has the Vbe of the transistor plus the two diodes so the temperature coefficient which is 6mV/Deg C which will not be good. With an op-amp u dont have that problem but u must use a stable Voltage reference, but then it becomes a completely different circuit. he is trying to make something simple and basic
