When McQueen says, " This is the one building I figured wouldn't burn." Kinda put me in mind of the Titanic, for obvious reasons.
It’s so weird to see OJ in movies before you know what. He was still playing football back then.
Filmed between the 1973 & 1974 seasons, so O.J. was coming off his 2000-yard rushing season.
Steve McQueen was really convincing as a fire chief in this film. Newman and Holden were both great, too.
I saw this film when it was first released in the theater, when I was ten years old, and it was fantastic to see it on the big screen.
The entire cast sparkles.
Saw this movie when I was 7 y.o. with the family back in 1974. Great movie and awesome star power.
I still recall seeing this film on initial release with my parents 50 years ago this summer. OJ Simpson was 26 and now he just passed away, age 76 from cancer. All that drama that ensued after his sports/acting career with his murder rap, the Las Vegas robbery and prison sentence-crazy.
Same here, I watched it in the theatre with my parents too.
O.J. Simpson was considered a great guy then and being that he was a football player and not a trained actor it was a big privilege for him to appear in a scene with stars like McQueen and Newman. Years later when he was charged with murder it was surreal.

And highly symptomatic of the era we’ve transcended, from a time of wide eyed filmic adventure, rising stars crossing over into a new realm…and then witnessing individual downfalls like this, part and parcel of the societal abyss we seem to be slowly entering.

OJ Simpson in frame with Paul Newman and Steve McQueen is proof of an amazing journey of success. Twenty years after this movie the crash and burn of this man's actions eclipse all of these accomplishments. A beautiful Woman and her friend walked into the most horrific ending possible. Football, Films, Sportscasting, Spokesperson, all a footnote in a true crime biography now. Did anyone see the Jealousy and rage in this strong immature boy/man that needed to have his way or else ?

Oddly enough Charles Bronson did not really like Steve McQueen ; it's here in a video somewhere talking about how Bronson thought a lot of what Steve McQueen presented to people was kind of a phony side and that he was actually considered rather spoiled and immature .
But then again there's people who couldn't get along with Charles Bronson , for example a few stories about him being too bossy on sets and wanting to dominate the other actors .

This is a well-written scene. Jernigan, who perhaps grew up poor and not long after the height of the civil rights movement, is incredulous that the fire chief wants to know who the business tenants are. The fire chief, perhaps understanding where Jernigan is coming from, politely explains without talking down to him. Jernigan immediately understands and quickly cooperates. O'Halloran just says, "Thank you."

I was an extra in the bleacher scene during night filming on California Street. It was icy cold that night.

Kinda ironic this scene would play out in real life 27 years later when the WTC twin towers were attacked on 9/11. However, the WTC’s architect Mr. Yamasaki didn’t live to see his creations burn and fall, nor were there any working elevators to reach the fires in both towers as the planes struck
