  • WOW. Like, the Cinder Track is perfection! Come learn all about it and complete the trail end-to-end with us.
The Cinder Track follows the route of the old railway from Scarborough to Whitby. The railway was in use from 1885 to 1965, and after it closed, Scarborough Borough Council bought the line. It just goes to show that local government can truly make a difference and create a beautiful legacy for the community and visitors alike.
So, join us! We'll start by crossing the huge Cinder Track viaduct in Whitby, officially called the Larpool Viaduct. 😍
We try to cover most Frequently Asked Questions in the video, but here's a summary of things you probably need to know if you're planning a coastal walk or cycling adventure on the Cinder Track in the UK:
    - How long is the Cinder Track? The Cinder Track forms 21 miles (34.4 kms) of Route 1 of the National Cycle Network.
    - Where does the cinder track start / end in whitby? The start of the Cinder Track in Whitby is at the intersection of Southend Gardens and Stakesby Vale in Whitby goo.gl/maps/1FeZNgudf5nfZjRo8
    - Is the cinder track flat? Although not totally flat, you'll find very gentle slopes. In our video, we show you which sections are mostly uphill or downhill.
    - Where can I get a Cinder Track Map and Cinder Track Leaflet? You'll find the map inside this excellent Cinder Track Leaflet that's free to download: www.yorkshire.com/media/84475...
    - Where does the cinder track start / end in Scarborough? The start/end of the Cinder Track in Scarborough is at the playground to the south east of the intersection of Wykeham St and Commercial St in Scarborough, near a grocery store: goo.gl/maps/9NicjnPsdCzeXe178
    - What are cinder tracks made of? As the name suggests, being a cinder track holds the meaning that the track ballast (the surface where the railway sleepers sit) was made from cinders rather than crushed stone.
    - How long is the Cinder Track from Whitby to Robin Hoods Bay? It was 10 km to Robin Hoods Bay, with 5 km uphill and then 5 km downhill irrespective of whether you start at Robin Hoods Bay or Whitby. The track surface is excellent! There's a small store and coffee shop options at Robin Hoods Bay, plus lots of free parking.
    - How about the Cinder Track Whitby to Hawsker? You'll see this in our video. It's the first section of the Cinder Track. The surface is good and it's a lovely short coastal hike.
    - Cinder Track Whitby to Ravenscar? Ravenscar is the highest point on the Cinder Track. You'll see it in our video. If you've ridden up to here, you may as well enjoy the downhill run to Scarborough or the lovely ride or coastal hike to Whitby!
    - Cinder Track Scalby? You'll see the Scalby to Scarborough section in our video too. It briefly goes through a couple of streets, but then there's a car-free section from Scalby to Scarborough that's a beautiful smooth surface running through the city under trees. Great for a kids' ride!
    - Cinder Track Bike Hire? You can hire a bike at Hawsker, or either in Whitby or Scarborough.
    - Cinder Track Parkrun? The Cinder Trail Parkrun meets every Saturday at 9:00am. It'll give you a taste of this gorgeous path, plus you'll get to enjoy experiencing it with others!
This is a truly beautiful destination. You're going to love it! If you're in the UK, we recommend doing at least the Whitby to Robin Hoods Bay section as a coastal walk or cycling route. It's heaven!

I thought it was clydesdale , so thanks for the correction. We rode passed several more of them today. I am now going to educate myself about this breed.
