Knife + full-size Multitool
Amen i carry full size knife and leatherman rebar love it 2 is 1, 1 is none
Trey Bailey Yes!
“Two is one and one is none!”
I’m really a fan of this. Because it couldn’t be more true.
spyderco in the pocket, victorinox in the bag :)
Yep. Have your cake and eat it too. Problem solved. :)
same
Okay let’s be real 99.9% of us are just addicted to our pocket knives. It’s just who we are!
Agreed. I'm 14 and I told my friends that I just spent $200 on a knife and they called me crazy
@@emyers4151 you're not crazy you just walk a different path they will never understand
I bought small slip joint knife just before christmas. Now I have 10 and it's still January.
@@emyers4151 Ask them how much they spend on their cellphones, and whether they still use them after a year lol. Men have been carrying knives and tools ever since we learned how to sharpen flint.
Trying to convince my self on why i need to carry them both lmao
Each to their own, I'm not here to preach hate but I carry a multitool to work every day and the only part I use is the pliers. The other tools are just inadequate compared to a dedicated tool. 1/4" bits won't reach recessed screws, the blade is less comfortable than a knife, the file is a joke and why would I need a bottle opener at work? However, the pliers and wire cutters are really good which is why I carry it :)
I agree that a multitool version of any tool is going to be sub par, but you have 14 tools in one. Jack of all trades, master of none. But sometimes I'd rather use a sub par screw driver rather than having to walk all the way back to my office to grab a real one. It's all about convenience, a tool will only help you IF YOU HAVE IT.
It really boils down to frequency of use. An on your person MT is great for occasional use. If you're using several tools several times a day you might be better served by a kit.
@@Brandon_Neil hey you're forgetting the full saying. Jack of all trades master of none but often better than a master of one.
I understand why carrying a multitool gives you way more utility, but it is just too heavy and bulky. You don't usually need to have a full tool set in your pocket, so I carry the bigger multitools in my bag in case I need them. I carry a squirt in my fifth pocket and a pocket knife. That gives me quick utility for anything I usually come across. Something requiring a bigger tool is probably too complex anyway to be solved in matter of seconds, so it can wait till I take it out of my bag.
my current use of my leatherman wave: slice the potato chip bags open with precision and speed
You should take it out and play with the tools every few days. You will find that once you familiarize yourself better with it, you will automatically reach for it to do things without thinking.
@@Brandon_Neil being using it for 2 years, I'm already familiarised with it, but since I'm still living near campus, there's not much thing that needs the usage of it anyway, thanks for the advice though
I carry a Leatherman Surge every day... Stopped carrying a folder because too many people freak out when I use it at work to cut something... And I'm talking a Spyderco Native 5... The knives on the Surge are almost double the length of the Spyderco but no one bothers me when I use them... Perception is reality... I use all the other tools all the time... I have to build new or take down old fixtures with all kinds of different fasteners and it's nice having one tool to take care of them all... I do have the bit kit with the extender all on my hip in the sheath, with the Surge of course... I do have some dedicated regular tools that I use for the 5% of the time the Surge just can't cut it but for the most part, the Surge is an excellent tool...
I switched from a Benchmade Bugout/LM Style PS to the LM Arc. I originally wanted premium steel and a smoother action that quality pocket knives offered over most multi-tools at the time. Then the Arc came out which had a Magnacut blade opened via thumb stud.
Yes it’s bulkier, but I found it annoying to keep track of two separate tools in my pocket. The Style PS kept falling out of my pocket and the various items in my pocket would get jumbled around.
I don’t find it uncomfortable to carry at all. Fits perfectly fine in my Levi jeans RFP. When I need to use it, the tools it offers are way more robust and functional. The knife is comparable to or honestly even better than some of my best pocket knives.
But if the knife was harder to open and of lesser quality than the one on the Arc, I’d go back to pocket knife/Style PS. Ease of deployment matters a lot
I carry the Leatherman Rebar, Leatherman Micra (scissors), dedicated folder, and full sized full tang fixed blade, each one having its own use. I may not use every one every day but I like the options I have.
1 is none, 2 is one and 4 is nice
i have some micras, light and scissors cut finger nails well.
Great concept for this video. I like to carry my 4 tiers of knives a fixed blade a Full size multi tool and a traditional folder and a modern folder everyday and I do everyday, i’m in the construction field so my job allows me to carry these, my multitool always stays the same with the Leatherman wave, and just about every day I change up the other three knives but I always have those four types on me
I definitely lean the one in done rought. I work as a welder and I Carry a wave plus, and I use it constantly. From cutting steel ties off craits, filing the end of contact tips, changing out ferrocerium on the strikers, getting out metal splinters, opening boxes, and the list just keeps going. Honestly one of the best 100 dollars I've ever spent and I would never look back to only carrying a folder and smaller multi tool. Although I do also keep a mora companion in my edc bag with a hogue OTF for fun.
Living in the UK, where we're only allowed folding slipjoint blades under 3 inches, carrying a full size multitool alone isn't an option, as they all have locking blades, or no blade. So it has to be pocket folder plus either bladeless multitool (choose from Gerber MP600 bladeless or LM Rebar knifeless, those are the only 2 options) or micro multitool - I have the LM Squirt and tbh that's the only micro multitool worth having although here in the UK those normally cost upwards of $50.
I found an obscure website which still has some Leatherman Kicks in stock at a reasonable price and I'm toying with the idea of buying that, as it has a non-locking blade that would be a legal EDC over here, but even if I do get that, I'll carry it with at least one folder, either a SAK Climber for scissors, or another SAK without scissors like Farmer (for the saw) plus a Classic SD for the scissors. So still carrying only a full size multitool isn't really an option, but tbh I enjoy carrying 2 or 3 tools/knives anyway and having a lot of rotation combination options.
I wish Leatherman and Swisstool would consider markets with restrictions on knives a bit more - not just the UK but also Germany and Denmark among others - and have non-locking bladed models.
You report and it's up to us to decide. Thanks for not forcing your opinion on us like a lot of channels do. I prefer dedicated tools instead of multi-tools for EDC but for the vehicle, it's just the opposite since I don't have to carry around a big chunk of steel.
Good summary of the varied viewpoints.
I've carried a medium SAK with me over the years and it has served me well.
I like knowing I can handle anything that comes my way, so multitool for me. Nothing really comes my way, but still! Just feels good.
I recently switched to pocket knife - leatherman squirt.
My main reason was while I found myself using my full size multi tool frequently I found that the tasks I was using it for could not be handled by something much smaller. I also have been trying to minimize my EDC.
I might go overboard, but I like my system. I wear an ESEE 4-HM as a belt knife, and I have a small EDC bag with a full size multi tool, and a small opinel jackknife. I have a big beater knife, a surgical sharp jackknife and a full use multitool, that I use to mostly clean my nails anyway lol. But it's nice to know its there.
I really like the Victorinox Cybertools :) There are quite a few situations where they are a good compromise.
Great video, Aaron, really good points for both sides! I myself will ALWAYS carry an EDC knife! That being said, I will also make sure I have a full size multitool available!
When I worked I just carried my Charge TTi. I never needed much more than the scissors and the drivers and I never needed the knife so I just rocked the MT. Now, I am retired and have a sickness for knife collection, so I do the Sqirt and either a mini Grip, a Manix LW, or a Para 3. My tools are never much more than a few feet away so I honestly don't really need a robust MT anymore unless I'm traveling.
As a person carry both pocket knife and full size multi tool,I think it’s a win win
A medium size folder that locks & a small pry tool works great for me.
All are appropriate....depending on circumstance. I use the sidekick sometimes, the wingman sometimes, one of the little ones when I back pack(it's in a Ranger Band on my Esee 6HM) because all I ever really need in the back country is the pliers since there isn't much to work on. Been carrying a Boker Ak since autos became legal in CO
I carry a full sized folder and a Gerber dime. But I also have a Vanquest edcm maximizer I keep in the console of my car with a fixed blade and a Leatherman wave +. And when I'm traveling a significant distance from home, I have a Vanquest trident 20 full of stuff including a Leatherman surge with bit extender and 41 piece bit kit in a mutt pouch. Trying to cover all the bases.
Right now I carry a full size multi tool and a folding knife, but if I could carry a pistol then I would ditch the knife and just have my leatherman sidekick
Fixed blade with a sheath pouch for a full sized multi tool.
Sounds like a good idea
I am a fan of both ideas. I enjoy carrying my multi tool. And there are times when a good knife and a mini work out just right like going on vacation. Thanks for the great video. Keep them coming and God bless you.
I carry both a regular sized multi-tool and a 3 inch knife (for local law reasons or I might go up to 4") and a flashlight (or 2).
I found a Leatherman Wave in good condition at a local pawn shop so costs were fine.
I always carry a knife. I always have a full sized multitool available or a couple of Swiss Army tools available when needed. Interesting video. I guess we're just all different with different needs.
When working or in town I carry a full size folder. In the yard or out in the country I wearing a fixed blade. But always a full size leatherman in every vehicle I am in.
I carry a leatherman juice S2 for minor tool tasks, a traditional pocket knife and a knife with a pocket clip. These are my EDC. I have a heavy duty multi in the car for serious tasks.
I use a leather man rebar daily. As a pastor of a small church as well as small business owner. The multi tool keeps me from having to go find a screw drive just to tighten a door latch, cut barbed wire or tighten a battery cable. Love the versatility of course their are exceptions but still.
I used to flip flop from combo to dedicated but since I got my leatherman wave + it's been my main carry 97% of the time although sometimes you do miss carrying a nice folder
I carry all of them plus a fixed blade knife, a 16ft tape measure and double x needle nose pliers. However, I use a power wheelchair and can mount a bunch of stuff. When I was working full time, I made up an edc ammo can full of tools that I mounted on the side of my chair. I love good tools and working with them. The right tool for the right job. I also love having them at my finger tips.
I've always carried both. Either a Leatherman wave or surge, and a full size folder. Lately an Emerson Super Commander. Last couple days I've added an esee 4 to that list as well.
I like the background man, pretty cool. Loving the content lately, keep it up 👍🏻
Carried a Emerson Patriot out in town and a Leatherman Rebar on the farm. Heavy duty stuff was for machetes, mauls, and chainsaws.
Laguiole de l'Artisan (Honoré Durand) folder with awl/spike and corkscrew (13cm and olive wood handle) and a blackened Leatherman Surge with bit kit and driver extender. Sometimes it's just better to pull out a traditional folding knife from a belt sheath than a blackened multi-tool, depending on the task at hand and in company . I use both tools regularly too. I unfortunately can't carry a fixed blade in cooler weather here since it's strictly open carry in the SFBA, California.
I carry a MT from the Ozark trail, Sheffield, Winchester to the gerbers, sog leathermans and a mid size pocket knife and of course my vic-sd!! Always rotating!!!! Excellent video 👍👍
Nice and interesting video!
A Victorinox Farmer in my pocket, a Victorinox Rambler on my keychain, a Wave in my Backpack (which is always with me) and a Byrd Cara Cara, which is also in my bag.
I’m thinking about replacing the Byrd for a more premium knife. Not that I use it a lot and mostly I just use my Victorinox, but I just love knives and I would like to have a sturdy backup.
Ow.... I also have an Opinel no 8 for food prepping.
I EDC a pocket knife and Victornox keychain knife. Sometimes I add a full-size multi tool.
Leatherman Surge user. Pressman on six color presses. Having the large multi tool allows me to reach in the tool box much less to change plates, blankets, maintenance, and fixing the press.
Personally, I put a letterman style ps on my keys and don't have to worry about planes with it because there is no blade. It is my "base" of scissors, tiny pliers, tweezers, and an anemic screwdriver. I always ave an EDC knife (delica because I have 3" restriction). If I think I need more I have a Leatherman Bond for all the extras. That being said, if I ever travel overseas, a SAK with scissors and a corkscrew is #1 because I am a wine drinker and airBnBs or hostels are hit or miss with that, and I'm not usually bringing a dedicated blade with me. So a SAK is all I bring with my Leatherman ps. Great video :)
I switched from a leatherman juice and a full size pocket knife to just a leatherman wave+ about a year ago. My juice broke and I sent it in for repair they couldn't fix it and it was discontinued, so the sent me a wave. Every time I try to carry a regular knife now, I end up needing a screwdriver or the pliers, it's also nice to have serated blade to abuse instead of being worried about ruining the edge I spent forever getting nice. I do miss carrying my nicer knives though.
I carry my Swiss Champ at work (mostly office) after work or weekends Leatherman wave but no matter what I always have a regular pocket knife and maybe a neck knife too. One of the only advantages to being a heavier guy is I can carry more gear without a problem!!
I carry both, full size knife and multi tool, dont leave the house without either one, Buck 110 and Leatherman Surge with bit kit, extender and a streamlight microstream, and when I can I include my Springfield Armory M1A 1911
For me, I carry a leatherman skeletool cx and my spyderco manix 2 as a defensive blade (which I’ve never had to use as such, and hope never to use for anything other than fidgeting with/opening boxes when my skeletool is loaned out or just left somewhere in the house). I like the larger pliers on the skeletool than the keychain multitools and the better blade steel to use for mundane cutting tasks. I have a leatherman wave in my backpack for heavier tasks, but it’s rarely used during the week when I’m sitting at my desk. The reality is that I like gear. I like to be ready when I need to be or someone else needs a hand. I could easily live my life without these things, but then I wouldn’t be watching your vids ;)
On body I always have a knife and smaller multitool. I also keep a full-size multitool in my bag so it's with me at work but also in my car at all times if I need it.
I am with the guy carrying a full- sized multitool AND a full size pocket knife! Lol...AND an olight m2t warrior! Lol
I have carried a leatherman wave everyday for 7 years. I use it every day at work from opening boxes to putting cabinet doors back on, cutting meter seals and metal shipping bands. I have used every tool in it multiple times and it has saved many many steps having to go all the way back to the shop just to get a screwdriver or pliers. For me it is the best fit. For others in their job or hobbies that may not be true but I won’t leave home without it..
A multi tools have more options when it comes to your daily life you never know. For instance, you would have to utilize a reamer to drill a hole or measure something.
Most of the time I carry both a pocket knife and a multi tool. I consider the blade on a multitool to be a redundant/backup blade. But there have been times where I have carried my Leatherman wave and a flashlight and called it a day. I say the more options you have the better.
Too Funny!
Working at an Auto Parts store, I rock a FS Leatherman or Gerber multi-tool (on my belt) for helping customers & a folder or two in my pants (one utility & one food prep). Being a Firefighter for 12 years hasn't helped my blade addiction either because I usually also have a fixed blade on me or very near at all times!
LoL
Favorite pocketknife plus Knipex Cobra XS plus Micra.
I have the wave but, im really waiting for yhe new Leatherman PS4! And i either EDC my LAPG tbfk or a fixed blade. I base my EDC on what my plans are for the day. If say, im going to a concert, i dont carry a multitool at all. But no matter where i go i always have 2 knives on me at all times.
Combo guy definitely. Only time I carry my skeletool or rebar only is when I'm on the road for work.
Leatherman/flashlight combo in a sheath, pocket knife du jour and my Titan 28-in-1 “magic” screwdriver. That’s how a locksmith rolls! With a Milwaukee drill and a Dremel of course.
Combo for me . Because a premium knife in pocket makes me feel good. #knifemonster. Great vid
I do both! I carry either a Wave or Rebar with a Micra and a pocket knife.
I have a full size knife and full size multitool. I keep the tool in my GHB. And I have three separate bags. One in each vehicle. Always have one with me.
I normally carry just a knife but for a long while i had a swizz army classic sd on my keys and that was all I needed
Cool video and this is really what people need to think about before making a purchase for something us first and foremost a tool.
I daily use the Leatherman Charge TTI. Whenever I need, I have an option. Endurance + lightweight etc.
My go to is the spyderco endura 4 and a leatherman surge.
Im sure you have done videos on most of the knives in this video but would like to see a list of all the ones you showed here
Thank you for this video. I carry Victorinox Hercules and Victorinox Classic. I was thinking if I need multitool. Now, I think you saved my money :-)
This video is the same thing that happen every morning in my head!!.... What set up I will use?
My wave has been my EDC for years. Serrated blade is my beater/loaner. Straight blade stays razor sharp and clean enough to eat with. The can opener and pliers are easily the most versatile tools.
I’ve got a leather man wave plus….with a aftermarket 154cm blade 😏
Nicely done! But I carry a Leatherman Wave in my left front pocket, I carry a KBar Mule on my strong side in my right front pocket. And for a back up knife I carry the KBar TDI scout carry.. I love knives, I'm actually a knife nut!! But I believe in carrying at least one blade for self defense, and that blade is never used to cut anything, it stays like a razor.
Always a nice size knife separate from everything else, then a full size multitool. Being a Murphy from western PA, the name is more common on the east coast and the “ph” is said as an “f”! Good for thought video, thanks!
Get a Wave+ OR Charge + TTI .If you need a pocket knife for self defense.....you're gonna get hurt, or worse. , The charge+ actually does a good job in practical applications .a pocket knife isn't a self defense weapon... its a "tool"
I always carry a fixed blade (these tend rotate tdc,brk gunny, custom mini kukri and a few others) and a leatherman TTI. I also carry an olight. never leave home without them
For more than a year my EDC is a Wave, a P4 on my key chain, a Sog Flash 1 and a lightweight flash light like a Ledlenser P2. I dont use anymore any of my neck knifes or any long single blade knife.
Swiss Champ + Knife of the day + Leatherman Surge in the backpack I have considered going to just the Surge and Knife of the Day from time to time - but I find myself using the Swiss Champ more than anything!
I have a leatherman style cs on my keychain in my maxpedition M2 waist pack. I also have a small folding knife in there. This is because I often have to leave my desk to go to the IT department and leave my edc bag at my desk. That's where I have my multi tools. Ìn the UK we can't carry any kind of locking blade at all.
And you're right. .. the keychain tool is 99% used for cleaning my nails!
How to solve the problem: small fixed blade/large multi tool
I love the idea of a multi tool, used to carry a leatherman charge tti, but I simply don’t see the advantage these days for myself as I have an edc bag on or near me 99.99% of the time which has pliers, a ratcheting screw driver with bits, and a silky pocket boy. Plus I’ve always got a quality blade on me too.
That being said, if for some reason I couldn’t have my pack near or with me then it would be feasible.
Will their ever be a multi tool with a blade of some upgraded steel?
Im glad he mentioned blade steels but theres so much more to mention in using an actual knife but i guess most today wouldn’t know or care. Most people i know cant see the difference between a benchmade s30v blade and a box cutter.
I carry a Rat 1 in D2 and Gerber 600 Basic. I want a seperate knife for defense if need be, the knife on the Gerber is backup & always sharp.
Or a knife paired with a medium size tool like the SOG power pint.
Before the PC police...I carried a SOG power pliers and a mid size pocket knife, always. The multitool is so ridiculousley useful it should be legislated to be mandatory to carry. But cutting stuff.....just so much quicker and easier with pocket knife. Now the only thing i can carry is the tinyest multitool on my key chain
I fall into the "All of the Above" category. I EDC a Ruike P801, Leatherman Wingman, SAK Officer, and Leatherman Micro. They all see some sort of use on a fairly regular basis.
I've done both over the years. But I generally prefer a single blade pocket knife on body and a full size multitool in my bag.
at work I carry a full size leatherman and a full size knife. but I do maintenance so to me it is worth the weight.
Full-size surge multi-tool and a Medford knife
I have a knife (Deejo Wood 37g) an a keychain multitool (Gerber dime) in my pockets and a full-size multitool (Leatherman Wave) in my bag. I don't want to carry a big multitool in my pocket + small Dime isn't scary so it's fine to use it in public without getting the looks. Leatherman is used when Dime doesn't have the right tool or isn't powerful enough for the task. And I have a minimalistic skeletonized folding knife because I don't want to clean aaaaaall of those movable parts of multitool after cutting some food with it. Just imagine what kind of cleaning you'll have to perform after cutting a tall creamy cake with something like the Wave...
Multitools are way often pointless, if you do manual work, you will have a tool cart or a tool bag, it takes a pocket exclusive for it if you plan to edc it or you will have to fix it into your belt every time, i really like to see it but i don’t think it’s actually necessary, same goes for pocket knives in an urban environment that it will actually stop you from going to a bar or places where they will check for potential weapons on you.
Combo full size each,I don't mind the extra weight
Being a retired building contractor I’ve carried a leatherman wave for over 20 yrs also a Bradford guaudian3 a case copperhead and a Swiss army champ as backup😆
.... as a certifi(able)ed "gear addict" (... and a CERT Medic), one of my 3 Spyderco Rescue knives, Swiss Army Champ, 500 Lumen flashlight and either SOG PowerAssist / Gerber multitool. (I like my toys...)
I carry the Wave or a Skeletool. No folder. No keychain. And is that a Casio 5600 series watch?
For better then 10 years I've carried the cold steel Pendleton mini hunter and a full size Gerber multitool. From trucking to fishing, camping, hiking and hunting a good knife and a good multitool can't be beat for most situations. Lost the want of folding blades after years of have the blades break. With the great options they have for small fixed blades you can't beat em
I like this style of video, too many people have the "my way or the highway" mentality. It's nice to see someone showing pros and cons to each
Spyderco police model , leatherman side clip & a leatherman micra on my key ring for about 20
years
Another reason to carry only the 'multitool, Your job prohibits carrying " weapons" Multitools are seen as less threatening . So on work days,my emerson and my benchmade folding knives stay home and my charge alx rides in my pocket. On off days I carry a knife and a leatherman micra.
I carry benchmade mini boost, leatherman rebar and a 3.5in fixed blade daily.
That is why for me the Nextool Flagship Pro is perfect for me and for my edc.
I liked the video because it's good to see the other side of the arguement.
I dont agree with you necessarily, but respect your POV.
I carry knives for self defense, which a MT I dont feel is strong enuff to handle,in a pinch,if it's all you have, well, "dance with who brung ya'", but not consciously deciding every day to bring a MT for self defense. [For a point of reference,I do PMC work, and am a SOF medic in a "S.O" designated Civil Affairs Battalion, and teach SOF or what people call "wilderness/ditch Medicine" classes in spare time, when I have enough people eventually sign up for a course, which could be every other weekend, or could be once every 2-3 months]
Also,MTs do not have glass breakers, whereas, many full size knives do...handy to have.
For the record,I carry a FS, good 'tactical' folding knife,a FS multitool, and a keychain Electricians model leatherman [I 4get the nomenclature of it] and often,a fixed blade,as open carry is legal here.
I dont carry a gun, bcuz I cant justify the weight vs probability of need, whereas with knives, there is always something I can use them for,and keep a gun in my bag,not on my person.
Just my opinion, everyone's is different,as everyone has different daily operational needs, and even those can change daily, weekly, monthly ect.
I feel it's always good to listen to others, and get other people's POV,as there may be something in there you have not thought of,and it can change how you look at things.
Have a great day, love the vids. Also,of all the CZcams "prepper channel types" , you seem like a very nice and knowledgeable guy, vs most others who seem like twats. You dont come off as 'all knowing, all seeing',dont come off as a juiced up,testosteroned out hot-head, and just basically seem like a nice guy....thats somewhat rare I have found, even in real life.
Take Care. RLTW! I
Craig
And thats why Leatherman made the Skeletool (especially the upgraded one)
