I have become enchanted with 'Koos Doep' and his music. It's oft dark, but accepting of fate, and there's a strange kind of peace one finds when listening to his music. Almost like floating weightlessly in the twilight stratospheres between earth and heaven, life and death, sleep and wakedness. Almost like the sensation one feels when one is having a particularly spiritual lucid dream.
Koos was one of the most remarkable wordsmiths that I believe I have ever had the privilege of listening to. My father's side of the family was Afrikaans, but having two generations growing up in Northern Rhodesia/Zambia and Rhodesia/Zimbabwe meant that English was the language we spoke. Moving to South Africa didn't change much, as I was in an English speaking school where 'Immigrants Afrikaans' was not much more than a free period in which we could goof around. I passed the language with an E- of which I was very proud despite the fact that I had good marks in all the other subjects on Higher Grade. I only really started learning Afrikaans properly when I came to London and got into a relationship with an Afrikaans girl.
Not so long ago, my German partner passed away, and - as a tribute to her memory, and also to distract me from grief - I began to learn German. I found myself becoming incredibly immersed in the language as I started to discover little gems that are just not possible to convey in the English language. I began to wonder what I had missed in Afrikaans, and it is only recently that I have come to the conclusion that it is a precious, poetic language of which which far too many people underrate simply because of the initial impressions made by its so called guttural sounds. Koos brought back to the language the beauty of diction that the richness of its words deserve in deep high literature presented as song.
Back to Koos. His use of words is quite simply put: masterful (I tried not to use Tom Dunn's words, but he nailed it perfectly). Lines like "Ek voel die kou, ek voel die vuur vreet my stuk-stuk op." just make me feel as if I have discovered a precious gem and I've had to wade through a labyrinth of self discovery illuminated only by Koos' wise poetry in order to find it. Now I have to try and escape this place that I find myself in, and the song has ended...
RIP Koos.I hope that a handful of rays finally lit the darkness in your heart.

Braai dude,my story is similar to yours.I was recently reading" fielas se kind "met Benjamin Kamotie ,he also wants to know who he is where he comes from so he can live life fully.I heard Koo's kombuis Lisa se klavier , in Capetown I loved it my ancestors on my father's side are Dutch and French hugenots ( Afrikaans.) Coetsenburg is in my family history. My father and his parents were anglicised from the Union, my mother created a strange hatred in me for Afrikaans , I loved Afrikaans secretly ,but now I'm finding a renewed joy in Afrikaans language and the culture I'm also working on my geneology which is so Interesting .Thanks for sharing your story.May Jesus bless you .

No other language can describe things so beautifully. I have been living in Australia for 13 years and speak Afrikaans to my kids every day. They were very small when we left but I am glad that we have made the effort to keep Afrikaans as our home language. Ongelukkig klink alles wat ek in Afrikaans skryf snaak vir my en die spelling kom nie meer so natuurlik nie.

Koos was an absolute master in the use of the Afrikaans language. Listen to any of his songs and one gets chills down your spine. He died way too soon. It is a pity that much of the song, its meaning and nuances will get lost in translation into another language. What he says and the way he says it can only be done in Afrikaans..

I know an old, old ditty
    of life's will and ways
    of long forgotten vessels in
    the cellars of the sea
    The words have been forgotten
    and still the ditty lingers
    like scarce remembered extracts of
    very ancient tale¦
    Of wanderers without direction
    of seekers that never find¦
and after all, all of us
were only children of the wind
    Faces, dreams, names
    have been scattered by the wind;
and where to all the words have gone,
    only a child would know
    Wanderers without direction
    seekers that never find¦
    after all, all of us
were only children of the wind...

    • @yingtongdiddledipo
      @yingtongdiddledipo Před 9 měsíci +2

I thought I'd try my hand at a translation that kept the mood, meter and rhyme more. Here it is:
I know an old, old ditty
      Of living's woe and glee
      Of long forgotten galleons
In the cellars of the sea.
The words have all since scattered
But the tune still echoes on
Like the tale of a time so long ago
      Told in a vanished tongue
      Of drifters with no shoreline
      Of searchers who never find
And in the end, we all are just
      Children of the wind.
All the faces, dreams and titles
Blow like leaves across the sky
There is no net to catch them
And only a child would try
      Drifters with no shoreline
      Searchers who never find
In the end we all are just
      Children of the wind
Not a perfect translation, but keeps to the beat of the melody and preserves a lot of the sea based imagery. Unfortunately, it is difficult to make English sound Afrikaans. A line like "lewen's wel en wee" has a lot of alliteration and assonance and is designed to simulate the push and pull of waves. It's also a line that breathes easily, like wind. Anyway, basically impossible to make an English translation that glides that well.

    Kinders Van Die Wind
    Koos Du Plessis
Ek ken 'n ou, ou liedjie
    Van lewens wel en wee.
    Van lank vergane skepe in
    die kelders van die see.
    Die woorde is vergete
    en tog die deuntjie draal.
    Soos vaag onthoude grepies uit
    'n baie ou verhaal.
    (chorus)
    Van swerwers, sonder rigting.
    Van soekers wat nooit vind.
    En eindelik was almal maar
    net kinders van die wind.
    Gesigte, drome, name.
    Is deur die wind verwaai.
En waarheen al die woorde is
Sou net 'n kind kon raai.
    (chorus)
    Swerwers, sonder rigting.
    Soekers wat nooit vind.
    En eindelik was almal maar
    Kinders van die wind.

Can anybody help ? I'd really like to find translations of the songs 'Skimme' and 'Mornay', especially Mornay as I've a sneaky feeling it's about, or for, his wife, and if the words are as good as the tune then it must be a beautiful song !

The song Mornay was indeed written for his wife, Mornay. And the words beyond beautiful!
