    Found your channel a couple of weeks ago and love it! I've learned a lot. I took your idea of taping the wire form in the mold and pounding an indentation in the mold and it works great! One thing I did was instead of using a file to ream out the channel for the spinnerbait wire is; chuck up a small drill bit into a drill, set the drill bit into the indentation, closed the mold and started the drill as I progressively added more pressure to closing the mold. It turned out perfectly. And a way you can cure a spinnerbait in a toaster oven is put the rack on the top and slide the top of the spinnerbait wire between two bars of the rack (go in from the bottom of the rack) and turn the spinnerbait perpendicular to the bars so that just the R bend is on top of the rack. That way you can cure a good bunch of spinnerbaits at the same time. Thanks again, keep up the good work!

    Have you ever tried using accelerator spray on your superglued eyes? More popular in the miniatures community, but it very quickly sets CA (super) glue and helps to avoid the clouding residue.

    • @SDGCustomLurecraft
      @SDGCustomLurecraft  Před 2 lety

      Thanks for the question! I’ve owned some and tried it in other applications. At the time I was worried about the affect it would have on the cured finish of the powder paint( the overspray I mean). I think I even called a company to inquire and they said it may (or may not… classic…) cause a problem, so I ditched the idea… stuck with fool ol’ SG Gel and a fan :). I remember the accelerator had a nasty smell too, super strong if I recall. Thanks again for the question!

    Did you consider putting the mold into a vice and just cranking down on it, slowly increasing the pressure in order to create the indentions that you need from the wire form ?

      Thanks for the comment/question! That's another great option and one I've heard guys use for sure. My shop bench is such that I can't mount a vise on it, so I actually don't own one where I could take this approach, believe it or not! Definitely another viable option that, I've heard, works great. Thanks!

    What a great video, very clear, concise and well thought out. have you ever modified the eye portion for multiple size hooks. I have the poison tail but the hook that it calls for is a wide gap and I want to use the 32866 Mustad hook as well. Please let me know if you have done such a thing. Thank you .

    • @SDGCustomLurecraft
      @SDGCustomLurecraft  Před rokem

      Thanks man, truly appreciated! I actually prefer the 32886 as well as use it, almost, exclusively for that mold (when making swim jigs anyway). Not sure I had to alter the eye at for it though. I did drill out the eye so I could use a flat eye hook and make chatters with the same mold. If you’d like to see that there’s a few videos on the channel (1/2oz modification and 1/4oz finesse size chatter 🔥🔥). Hope this helps!!

    I’m looking for a really good spinnerbait mold. I have some old school Do-it molds. I’ve looked at modifying my jig mold like you did. ORRRR…. I am looking into the ultra head spinnerbait or a bug molds mold. I’m looking for one with eyes, good weight balance and a larger skirt collar. Do you have any advise or suggestions for me.

    • @SDGCustomLurecraft
      @SDGCustomLurecraft  Před 10 měsíci

      I love the poison tail due to the contours and texture on the head. Its definitely not "thin" and ideal for grass, but the round head does a nice job keeling the bait - and of course the eyes always look good on it. Nice big skirt collar space as well, but you'll get that with the ultra head as well. I've never used Bug Molds... seems like satisfaction varies with it, depending largely on the particular mold. So I guess it comes down to grass or not and whether you want to modify a mold or buy one ready to make SBs right out of the box! Hope this was helpful!

  • @scottwilson8208
    @scottwilson8208 Před 3 lety

    Welcome back! Sooooooooooo...did you have any concern about distorting the flat planes of the mold by beating on it with a big dang hammer?

    • @SDGCustomLurecraft
      @SDGCustomLurecraft  Před 3 lety +1

      Thanks for the question Scott. It’s been my experience that the mold is otherwise unaffected. The pounding is just sufficient enough to make the small indention of the wire, but not enough to distort the mold. In the case of this poison tail, it’s poured perfect Swim Jig heads after the mod. I can see a potential issue if you didn’t hang it off the edge of the wood and pounded it at an angle... but even then, man you’d REALLY have to wail on it!! LOL those molds are thick!
      Great question though! Appreciate the feedback!
      Edit: BTW, some guys recommend just squeezing the mold with the wire form inside to get the same effect (in a vise etc). So, that may be an alternative that doesn’t feel as dangerous :).... although I suppose one could argue the same risk exists (maybe even more so with constant pressure (????). Anyway, just came to mind FWIW!

    What do you do to make sure that your lead pot doesn't get clog or how to unclog the spout?

    • @SDGCustomLurecraft
      @SDGCustomLurecraft  Před 7 měsíci

      CLEAN soft lead is critical. I know a lot of guys look for a deal and get free wheel weights to melt down, but IMO, that stuff just cruds up your pot and clogs the nozzle. If its already clogged you can use a wire to unclog (push it up from the bottom... but use pliers and gloves!). Draining and cleaning the pot afterwards will help for the next round. If that doesnt work you can actually order a replacement pot and post from Lee and start over with good clean stuff. Hope this helps!

    Awesome video. When pouring that mold as a jig do you prefer the hook that the mold takes or a regular 30 degree hook as far as hooking percentage. Do you see any negatives to the bend being above the hook point on the hook the mold was made for?

    Need to be very cautious when hammering on molds,they're only cast aluminum,especially that hard.
    While the mold when closed is laying on the small bit of wire closest to the hinge it isn't the further away you get from the hinge which is why it didn't indent it near the handle.When hammering on it to make the indent near the mold handle it puts a ton of shock stress on the hinge and after the wire at the hook.1000's of molds have been broke this way,sometimes it'll break in half or near it other times it'll break the hinge.A lot of them have been broke just my squeezing the handles to try and get it shut when a hook eye or shank is just a little out of whack.
    The best way to do it is lay it out where you want it like you did.Then take a sharpie with a sharp point or in your case where you sprayed the mold a scratch awl and run along the sides of the wire on the mold.Then take a dremel with a cutting wheel and cut it between those lines you scratched into the spray coat.
    One can do this with a smoked mold too,and if you haven't smoked or sprayed those you can also use a sharpie to "color" the mold then scrape it with the awl.Think of it as a poormans engineers layout ink.
    When I started pouring Crappie spinnerbaits I tried the shaker,but ended up just using a piece of paper folded 2 times (1/4'd).Cup it in your hand an pour a lil powder in and then dip your jig and wrap the paper around as you twist the jig.Can't get it to hot or you'll have a very thick coat,but it works a lot faster.
    Those oven racks for curing don't need 3 bolts,2 is perfectly fine for all heads that will it in those toasters.The 24" or 26" ones (15 total,still need to make more) I made for my kitchen (shop) oven I only used 3,1 on each end 2.5-3" in from the ends and 1 in the middle and they hold everything I make just fine.I only used 1/16" x 3/4" aluminum angle for my racks and it's plenty stiff enough to get by with 3 bolts.
    It's not much but that middle screw will take place of 1-3 jigs depending what size they are an if you making a lot of them it adds up,plus it's one less bolt you need to mess with.
    Another problem I have found with the toasters over the years that I didn't mention in one of your other vids,but the ones I have used all change temps every time you or it turns off and you turn it back on.Have to check them every time you turn it on.I used to paint a lot of jigs then cure them in batches by setting my time and right before it stops I'd hurry and turn it over to constantly on then load and then set the time again.I found doing this I didn't have to check it every time.With my kitchen oven I just set a timer,I still check it every time I turn it on though as it can be off too but it's nowhere near as bad as those little toasters.
