Why I'm not Buying the Cantina Haslab

  • Here are my thoughts on the official reveal of the Star Wars Vintage Collection Cantina HASLAB crowdfund project by Hasbro. I actually really like the details of this set and its design, but I just can't see it fitting well into my collection. Because I collect mostly vintage Kenner figures and 6" Black Series figures, the carded TVC figures aren't really drawing me in. The biggest factor is the size. I love dioramas and creating scenes from the film, but I just don't have room for something this large, even with the modular options.
Let me know in the comments what you think. Are you buying the Cantina Haslab? Why or why not?
    Thanks for watching! :)

Someone in another comment forum called it FIGURE HOSTAGE LAB.
Yeah, about right. If they offered the sisters and bartender available separately, the set wouldn't fund, or just barely.
I'm skeptical given the time window that it could make it past the Greedo goal.
As a cantina fan, I can't even consider it. No space to display it, and it's still just a bar. I mean, they've made versions of it before...no matter how lacking they were.
I'm still waiting for Mattel's Snake Lair go-fund-me whenever that is.

As a long time 3.75 collector, I’m definitely purchasing this. I don’t care if there is no ceiling or floor. A ceiling would block the view, the floor of the shelf is the floor. I really appreciate the modularity of the set and of course… the Tonika sisters! I have a perfect spot on my shelf. I’d buy two if I could afford it.

It doesn't make sense at all in terms of space or logic. You are correct. But my emotional ties to my black series collection want a super detailed 1:12 scale cantina bar like the TVC one. And I would find a way to get that integrated into my black series display, which is huge and has some available real estate. Honestly, though, I'm just going to build one from scratch and use 3d printed items for the bar. I don't think Hasbro will do any extensive dios for Black Series. Thanks for watching and commenting!

Other people will buy this, but I sure won't be overspending $500-$600 total cost for a bunch of plastic I have no use for. Hasbro has been ultra cheap in not including lights, sounds, or action features on their Haslab offerings like the vintage Kenner toys, so it's not worth it. I'm only interested in the figures namely the Tonnika sisters, Nabrun Leids, and the Wolfman.

Hasbro really need to listen to the community and make some long overdue cantina aliens in 6inch 😂. Momaw Nadon is a good start 😀

Dave!! I haven't got room for anything I buy now, so I just "make it" as and when... I spent 14 hours yesterday shoehorning a 6 inch scale Star Destroyer Bridge into my sw room. That was 20+? inches deep, so I just made the baseboard shelf deeper to accommodate it.
I'm surprised you're not getting this for your kenners. 3d prints are good, but they are never the "quality" of Hasbro. Quality definitely in inverted commas there!! 😅 Like you, if this was BS, then I'd be all over it, but I would be guessing at £750? minimum, if 3.75 was 500....😢 I really would struggle/fail to find that kind of money, and they've never considered a payment plan as far as I am aware. Even without wanting it, I do think it's a fantastic thing. The Bar needs a lattice style roof slat to neaten it and they should have smoothed the exterior more, but this will look epic when it's inhabited... As for the floor? Plywood cut to size, pva glue and sand would do the trick. A painted board?... Not ideal, but not a deal breaker either. I seem to have the reverse opinion of everyone as well. £100 extra for almost half of the structure is a bargain!! I think the initial price of £400 is too steep, so if I was getting it, it would the "main event" not the base offer.

Plus, I don't really have room for it either, nor a lot of cantina figures to populate it with. After all that consideration, I decided to pass. It has given me some good ideas for doing a black series shelf display though. Thinned out booth backdrops, smaller bar area, etc. I don't think Hasbro will get into the 6" diorama game.

Most FDM printers can use multiple colors and filaments that would work well and save time painting.

Sadly I never owned a Kenner original Cantina! I've started customizing the Hasbro Mandalorian Nevarro Cantina with Stan Solo and Next 17 custom figures as well as well as a mix of Super 7 Universal Classic Monster, Vintage Kenner and Hasbro Star Wars TVC action figures. I considered backing the Haslab as well as not backing it. I love the Vintage Collection line and hope it can continue, so I will likely back it at the start of July. I'm not too thrilled I have to wait until Fall 2025 for the Haslab Cantina to ship, but the whole Return To Tattooine 2025 campaign has me curious and hopeful Hasbro will continue the line! It's understandable not wanting to back it! It's a lot of money to ask for upfront. Hasbro probably could sell the diorama at retail if they really wanted to, but it seems to get harder and harder to find Star Wars toys in actual brick and mortar stores! :(

Good thoughts Tim. Your point about the "Return to Tatooine" is important I think. They should show all their pipelines related to the cantina before this campaign ends. That would probably push people to buy the cantina if there are indeed a bunch more aliens coming. Thanks for watching!

I agree with everything you said. My brother is going to get one and I have a week to make a decision. The upside is, I already have all the aliens and being an original Star Wars fan and Tattoine lover, it would be unthinkable not to buy it. The downside is it will end up costing me a thousand dollars because of where I live and I really don't have the room.
But the thought of the Tonika sisters alone. And being a lighting geek I've already got it lit. If I go for it I will do the deluxe. Although the money side of it will hurt a bit, the hardest part is where I would put it. But if I don't do it now and want it in a year's time it will cost me double, maybe triple. And that's something I would never do...I paid double once for a legacy Falcon. Never again will I do that...

What I want is a Bespin playset. As that's never been done before other than the cheap cardboard thing several decade ago. The problem is I doubt they'll be able to do it as an actual playset, as instead they'd want to do it as a diorama. Meaning, most playsets have everything crammed together to make it fit, whereas Haslab does it where it's screen accurate.
So I'd want Cloud City interior, a place for the Falcon to land, and the place where Vader/Luke battle, and then a place where Luke hangs under the bottom of the city. Probably would have to do that where you hang the playset on the edge of a table. But I doubt they'd do this and would probably instead just do some of the interior hallways.
I'd also like a Dagobah playset, which could be a good price point since it's small.

Now I'm not going to get it as I have no room for it and for that price they really should have included a lighting kit. That said, I did get the Razor Crest (which also should have had lights imo).

      @RedWagonDioramas  Před 22 dny +1

Good thoughts! I have the razorcrest too. Amazing ship! Main reason I did not get the ghost or this cantina was space and price. I do like the haslab projects generally, but not everything works for everyone. I think the rancor could have succeeded if they hadn’t bungled the campaign so badly and if they had done better addressing the prior problems in the black series line. The Reva light saber was a non starter. Such a weird choice that had to be pushed by Disney. Thanks for watching!

    • @DanakarEndeel
      @DanakarEndeel Před 21 dnem

@@RedWagonDioramas Yeah, the Rancor (I think) fell flat because of the extremely weak tier rewards (some bones and a piece of cardboard? WTAF?!). Now I read that they did include the Keeper art some point but by then it was probably too late already as interest had dropped too much. Also, I wasn't overly impressed by the paintjob either tbh.
Yeah, that lightsaber was just a massive fail as that Reva was just a nobody and it should have simply been sold at Disney parks directly or something in my opinion. That thing had no place as a Haslab product. Almost felt as if Disney was pushing it for some 'diversity' nonsense or whatever that's now running rampant everywhere.
So yeah, the Cantina and the Ghost show that Haslab is finally back in tune with the fans. Let's hope it stays that way. I wouldn't mind seeing more large playsets of iconic locations instead of ships as the playsets from Hasbro felt rather lacking and you always needed to buy 2 packs as they only give you half a set for some reason. I had to buy that cantina set from the Mandalorian twice just to have enough parts but they should have included benches as well imo so Mando could sit. Then again, we're also still missing a 3.75 figure of Greef Carga in his bountyhunting garb afaik (only ever saw him as a figure in his magistrate robes).
I really love my Razor Crest and the details are awesome. I do miss that (at that price) they did not include some lights and I am very hesitant to drill holes myself for wires and lights LOL.

Schous is the red-eyed alien whose face looks like a wolf-bat hybrid, and he can still be seen sitting in the back of a cantina booth in the most recent edits/updates of the film. There was a 3.75" figure of Sivrak done in the late 1990's as part of the Power Of The Force line, but as cool as it was, its sculpt and detailing did not look very film accurate. With so many silly and weird alien and goon characters in the cantina scene, it remains an incomprehensible mystery to me why George Lucas felt so much animus towards that one particular wolfman character that he demanded his minions at Lucasfilm to remove it from later editions of the film.

Now it makes sense why you wouldn't have a lot of 3.75 figures (I think I commented numerous times, asking myself how hasbrofree some1 can be😂). While I think it's clever to not collect too many Figure lines, I think TVC and Retro Collection are still a better combo than BS RC. A lot of Hasbro Figures display wonderful with the Kenner figures. Black Series never intrigued me because I found them too big and never having a realistic platform for vehicles and playsets. I think Hasbro brought Black Series to life to attract the 12" Hot Figure Collectors. If It was me, I would just buy Black Series for the figure itself, while focussing on 3.75 for Dioramas and what not. A lot of Hasbro figures you can easily get under 10 bucks and it's fun getting them😉. Custom figures often are pretty mediocre while they at least cost 40 bucks. Some Custom Figures are a must acquisition, while some should just be skipped. Quality before quantity. You do nobody a favor creating a load of mediocre figures that Hasbro could easily do better while costing like 3 times more. Stan Solo never uses the same body for a figure, and they cost just as much. If factory produced figures don't reach the quality of Stan Solo, they should just abandon their project and join Stan Solo.

Yes. I didn’t collect any modern figs until 2016 when black series hooked me in. I have some Ep 1 figs, but not much else 3.75”. Then I rediscovered my Kenner love during the pandemic. As for Stan solo, I love the figs I got from him before he lost his mind in my comment section, cussed me out, blocked me everywhere and then banned me from buying his figs. So that’s why I like Next17 so much. Owner isn’t psycho. More of a back story for you there. So that’s why I’m vintage and black series. I just wasn’t collecting in the late 90s to late 2010s.

@@RedWagonDioramas Same here. I grew up with my Brothers' Kenner Figures and a few vehicles I received from a cousin (I wonder with his consent XD).
Since Star Wars was over when I was a kid, I never got to collecting Star Wars. But one thing was pretty evident early on, I was more into the Star Wars Figures than the movie itself. To me Star Wars the movie was a little bit too complex to understand. I was aware that the movie was phenomenal, but I wasn't attached to it emotionally. I think as a kid I was too overwhelmed to follow the plot. The only thing that drew my attention were the lightsaber fights and the lightsaber figures, which I never had og sabers for (Toothpick Cliq!).
There were few moments where I almost got into collecting Star Wars. The 90s with the POTF line and one Star Wars Convention. I got a few POTF figures but declined the line shortly after ,because the figures didn't have the same feeling of OG Kenner figures, but I was intrigued by the facesculpts and the design of Lightsabers the line introduced.
If it wasn't for the prices that were meant to be paid for Kenner figures 1997 at the only convention I ever attended, I would have started collecting many years ago. But I was shocked that I had to pay for every figure that wasn't even in a package 20 bucks at least. I remember the figure that was the cheapest being a loose Emperor with no cane. I didn't even recognize the figure being the Emperor. I thought it was some cleaning old lady from Jabbas palace. For me it was just crazy spending that money for loose figures.
I remember leaving the convention with 3 things. Rancor Keeper's hat, Leia Boussh, Lando Skiff Guard. I think you see the pattern👌.
What ultimately got me into collecting Star Wars was the Retro Collection. I always liked the aesthetics of OG Kenner Figures and I always wanted to have an OG lightsaber.
As for Stan Solo, I think he realized that he isn't someone who likes to interact publicly. I think he realized that he is a private person. That's why his work is great
