I was a freshman in HS when this was going on…early on in the school year. I remember we waited for the bus in the dark (only an hour or so drive from where this all happened) the one sole resident on the road we waited on installed a huge street light over his garage/driveway and called the school district’s transportation department and told them we were now waiting in his driveway under the bright light for the bus. The killing never made it to our part of Florida, but that dude was a legit hero. I told the story when he passed…will always love that neighbor…

I was in college 106 miles north of Gainesville & we were scared that the killer would come to our college. It was a very scary time. My Mom called me several times a day to make sure I was still ok.

Between this guy and Ted Bundy, Florida colleges went through terrible times.
No doubt. But I can’t imagine just in general how scared parents had to be to send their kids to college in general after these events whether it was Florida or somewhere else. It’s already nerve wracking for parents sending their kids away for the first time so adding in murders at college campuses to the equation just had to be terrifying as any parent sending their kids to college.
Florida in general is famous for its violent crimes! Most be the atmosphere! The heat or water quality.
Childhood trauma is not an excuse to do things like this. I was 9 years old and lived 30 mins away from this and to this day people STILL blame mommy and daddy for his actions. So many adults have childhood trauma but they don't make the choice to hurt people and rob them of their lives. He chose to hurt those people and because of that should burn for all time.

Unless you are one the many adults you are talking about, you have no base to substanciate your opinion. I can say from experience that the marks left by domestic violence and abuse cannot be written out of the outcome when it comes to producing criminal behavior. We are seeing here an extreme form of violence that is the result of many factors, but you cannot deny that this case was severely shaped by the violence and abuse this man was subjected to since his early childhood. Violent behavior has a way to reproduce itself, be that in the form of various mental health issues or, in this case, psychopathy. Untill we adress this part of the issue and make efforts to stop this sort of behavior from getting so far as to lead to psychopathy, we cannot write it out as a less important factor.
I live in Gainesville and this was a frightening time. Everyone was sleeping with a gun.

Me and this dude seemed to have grown up eerily similar…Having extremely abusive fathers and going through a lot of abuse in and out of the home. I also have alters (other “personalities”) as this guy claims of himself, but we’ve never killed anyone nor do we intend to. The only people we wished harm to was our abusive dad but even that we have let go of. Holding onto anger only causes more bitterness, so we’ve forgiven him and cut contact. We won’t ever have a relationship with him and don’t want to, as he’s still very dangerous, but this dude blaming everything on his alters (if he does have them) is frustrating because it’s makes more people think those of us with alters are killers and evil. From his horrible childhood abuse it’s very likely he does have alters, and who knows maybe it was an alter’s influence that caused him to lose control, but it doesn’t take away any responsibility or being the victims back to life…it’s so sad. I also wish his dad went to prison for child abuse.

It really is amazing how many in the comments below are confusing "explain" with "excuse". Using childhood trauma to "explain" what lead them to do what they did is NOT at all the same as saying it excuses what they did. No one's here saying his bad childhood "excuses" his atrocities, only that it helps "explain" what lead to his mental state that informed his actions. Some here seem to have trouble grasping the difference between those two words, excuse and explain.
We're social animals to the core. We need to be loved. We need to be seen, to be appreciated, to feel that we are good at something. To feel we have value. If we're denied all that at every turn, we will turn to extreme ways of getting it. Some version of it. Somehow.

Most likely because the local opinion on the matter is that we just don't talk about this tragedy. There used to be a mural that local artists had painted in memory of the victims, but younger generations kept defacing it, so the city council chose to paint over it. Some local groups have tried to keep the memory of this event alive, but most people around here don't even know it happened.
Probably because it wasn't based on the crimes, the guy that wrote the screenplay was inspired by a news report he was watching. I believe his name was Kevin williamson that wrote the original story after seeing the report and realizing how vulnerable we are in our own homes.

I have a 90 pound Pitt Bull, a 95 pound Sheppard, and Australian Sheppard and a great dane/greyhound
All indoors except to use the bathroom. I also have firearms in reach.
I live in the country and police are 45 minutes away.

Wow, I did time with Danny at FSP in October 2006 and my cell block (I was housed on “M-wing” and he was on “Q-wing”) was right nearby his which was the actual “death row”. I passed him in the hallway as he was on his way to a meeting with his attorneys, only days before he was executed. The guy’s eyes would send shivers up your spine, that’s how cold they were. The “Gainesville Ripper” he was dubbed by the press.

@@AJhealing I only saw him twice while passing in the hallway at FSP. He had chains around his waist and his hands and feet were shackled. There were three guards escorting him. He looked at me and when I saw his eyes they were completely dead. His hair was short and salt and pepper in color. This was right towards the end when he had frequent attorney visits, as he was about to be executed via lethal injection only days later. He was a “dead man walking”.

The same exact thing you call excuses, lots of experts claim are exactly what makes a serial killer. Everyone, including you has no clue what makes a serial killer, so to call it excuses is absurd. Instead of excuses it is unknowns. Some experts think serial killers are born that way, some think the develop based on experiences they went through etc, so again, calling it excuses is highly absurd. Maybe his 'excuses' actually are what made him a killer. Long before most experts connected adult films to serial killers, Ted Bundy claimed that is what made him a killer. So maybe these are not excuses at all.

We simply do not know what caused him to murder, and his excuses may well just be what he actually thinks turned him into a murderer. Nobody knows, period. Maybe he is making excuses, or just maybe he is telling you what he thinks caused him to murder. That is why I used Ted Bundy as an example, because before he died he gave an interview the day before he was executed, and he was asked what caused him to murder, and with zero hesitation he said adult movies. He even explained how he found adult magazines and movies in the trash when he was a kid, and he became obsessed with it. Now maybe Ted Bundy was just using that as an excuse, or maybe he was telling you what he honestly thought about what made him murder. Nobody knows, but it would be foolish to just assume he was making excuses. After all, we now know that Ted Bundy was interviewed by the FBI several times, and not for his crimes, but for other people's crimes. They were using Bundy to help them understand why other people would kill. One of the more famous times was when they interviewed him multiple times about the Green River killer. A lot of the things he told them about the Green River killer turned out to be very accurate. So to assume some of these killers do not have an insight on why they kill is just absurd, or the FBI would not use serial killers to help get an understanding of why they kill. Most people do not know this, but a lot of times as part of not giving serial killers the death penalty, is for them to agree to be evaluated and interviewed by the government anytime they need them. So even the government understands that not everything they say is an excuse. One of the great mysteries in life is how serial killers become serial killers, and that is why interviewing them and taking what they say seriously is so valuable, because only a serial killer has any knowledge of what makes them kill.

Yes that is correct, Robert Ressler coined the term serial killer, and Bundy was the first guy he labeled a serial killer. Sure the term serial killer was used once decades before Ressler used it to describe what we know as serial killers today, but it was not used in the same was. The term was used once in a German book The first person ever written in print to be a serial killer was Wayne Williams in the early 80s. When that case was happening Ressler told the NY Times what a serial killer was, and it became a household term. So again, if Bundy lied so much, then why is he taken so seriously? The FBI is not dumb, they are not gonna keep using serial killers if they are liars. The truth is that they find serial killers are usually very honest. They actually think they are honest because they thrive off of being validated for being known as a serial killer. That is why they think most serial killers confess with so much detail, because they want the world to know exactly what they did. Serial killers are in fact known for being overly honest in most cases. Just look at Bundy, BTK, Ridgeway, Kemper etc, and the list goes on of serial killers that have spilled their guts about everything they have done, and has been confirmed to all be true. You need to stop believing everything you see on TV, just because a serial killer does evil things, it does not mean they lie about everything.
I was a kid growing up in West Palm Beach when this happened and the fear went way past Gainesville because I remember women in my town not going out alone and I was only 11. I think the whole of South Florida walking on eggshells!!

For as long as I could remember until I turned 16 and started lifting weights to get bigger and more confident, my 'dad' called me 'stupid, dumb, worthless, useless, and among those words were some very vulgar language. It wasn't until I punched as hard as I could and knocked him on his ass that he stopped. From that point on, we never spoke another word to each other. I contemplated stabbing him in his sleep. And it messed me up for life. All the abuse from when I was 5 until I was 16 really messes up the psyche of a child and young teen. But I never thought of harming anyone else but him or myself. Just goes to show, you never know what your abuse will do to a child. Oh, and for the 'expert' commenters here, in 1970, there were only two classifications of mental disease: crazy / insane or 'mentally deficient or retarded'.
Likewise. May dad abused me verbally and physically whenever he could, and my mother. He was jelous because I was smarter than him. My mother was weak, so I had to defend her from the age of 8. I contemplated running away but didn't because of her.
Now I have a PhD and my own business, but the consequence of this upbringing is that I cannot have a partner, and neither me nor my sister have kids.
Children are not able to understand when adults do this to their offspring. Their parent/parents are projecting their thoughts about themselves onto the innocent child.

I remember this very well I lived in Tampa about an hour south of Gainesville at the time my father was a sheriff and when they sent him down to Tampa my father sat one on one with him while he was waiting to be transferred and he said he had dead eyes.
What about his father? I know this guy was a vicious, monstrously evil killer. But it seems to me that his father has some bearing in the construction of the monster. I am curious to learn what became of his brother, and why did he not appear in any part of this account. Did his brother do ok? Did his mother survive? What about his father, did he live to see how his handy work turned out?

His father is a crook but I wouldn’t blame him for how Danny turned out killing people. I was raised by a violent short-tempered father. He used coercive control repeatedly. I got beat severely for the slightest things like if I coughed or sneezed even. I grew up with trauma, poor self esteem, overly people pleasing, insecure etc at times. But not a killer.

The last thing we know about his father (James Rolling) that he got karma that in one time both the father and Danny got into a argument,
It escalated that Danny shot his father in the face and the stomach. Although the father survived but permanently lost an eye and ear.
He passed away in 2012.

YOU learned, like I did, to stay as far away from him as you could, right? For me it was my mother, mom is too good for her, she was just my mother. Out of us four kids, she picked me, to blame everything on. Including the fact that my dad finally had enough of her and left. And he went FAR AWAY, to Alaska. As soon as he left, she was nothing but horrible to me. "You're just like your father!" which SHE thought was an insult (?!), or "Why can't you be more like your sister!?"! I was never good enough just being me. She did teach me one awesome thing. How NOT to treat a child! Until we lost her at 25, our daughter Kara KNEW that she was loved and cherished. I told her EVERY SINGLE DAY that she was beautiful, smart, and very much loved. Many, many hugs and kisses for my sweet girl. And she really was sweet. The amount of people that came to her wake made me realize that she was loved by ALL of her friends too. They showed me great kindness. So I guess I should thank her. But I don't feel like it. I probably never will. She almost ruined me completely. My Grandma and my Aunt got me out of there as often as they could, thank goodness.

His song 'Mystery Rider' is so good! He could've been a popular singer but no, he chose this path. He chose death.
Everybody's going on about his not so ideal upbringing, and no one seems to aknowkedge the fact that he was an alcoholic from his teens on, and alcohol does damage the brain when consumed like he did. But booze has a strong lobby so of course no one blames that legal drug.
I remember my nephew telling me how he used to talk to Danny everyday. He asked him tons of questions. The things he told him would send chills up a person's spine.
He was like a boy trapped in a man's body. Unbelievable how a person can act sensible one minute and the next while he was giving details of his crimes he had that evil look in his eyes.

Given how hard the turkey fought the death penalty to save his own skin, and given that he was unable to assert any semblance of control over his future and even his day to day affairs, it's possible that they took those photos just before or possibly just after he learned he was going to be sentenced to death.
I can't help thinking that if that woman helped fight him off instead of just running and locking herself in the room then she might have stood a better chance.
Yeah I don’t like victim blaming, however, if someone (especially someone I cared for like a friend) was being attacked, I would immediately grab the largest object and bash the fucker over the head before throwing her whatever other large object was around so we could both beat his ass. I know it very well may not pay off that way, but two against one is far greater than one against one, and if he can break into ur house he can break into that room.
U might be right but when a person is suddenly in danger of losing their life panic sets in and their bodies react without much thought as to options. We tend to flee to the closest place that we feel safe. Victims don't always have time to consider the possible outcomes of fight vs flight.

He used a K-Bar knife and in one murder, bypassed a sleeping roommate first. This is the killer that inspired Scream. Oddly, the Idaho 4 killer used a K-Bar also, bypassed killing two of the surviving roommates, and committed the murders on the anniversary of the Amityville murders. If Kohberger's alibi holds up and he wasn't the real killer, then the killer is still on the loose.

A profiler once said people like these aren't born they are made. And what the profiler was saying is that no one is born evil it's the things that they are exposed to and exsprence over time that molds them into what they become. And it's true especially when they aren't receiving the professional help they need and don't have a good support system to back them up which sadly and unfortunately is so often the case especially with poor people. Society forgets about anyone who doesn't have money, connections or isn't famous leaving such individuals to their own devices and the many predators that prey upon the unfortunate souls of this world.
There are plenty of serial killers over the sentries that have perfectly normal upbringings and no trauma ever in their lives. Wonder what the profiler would say about them? What would he blame their behavior on? Just my opinion but it seems to be a personal choice ( most of the time) if a person acts normal or abnormal.
Some people's death instinct ( mortido) is heightened because of early childhood trauma. They would have a very low libido.

This is my hometown and I remember all of this. I was a little bit younger, still in school, not yet college, but it was very scary. We actually had a run of things around that time: the Tiffany Sessions disappearance, the murders at the Steak N Shake, this guy. Yeah, it was very freaky. But people still remember it around here and try to be careful now.

Childhood trauma/abuse is NOT any sort of reasonable explanation for what that monster did. While I agree that our pasts greatly impact our lives as adults, as individuals we make choices each and every day that are 100% ours. That piece of shit's mommy and daddy were NOT there putting a gun to his head when placed that woman's head on the TV facing her own corpse. He and he ALONE made the decision to hurt those people and for that deserves to burn in hell for the rest of time. What makes him different or special from the MILLIONS of others that have suffered greatly at the hand of their "parents" that DONT grow up to be the scum of the Earth raping and murdering ? No, I'm sorry but this is ABSOLUTELY NOT any sort of justification for the despicable acts he committed.
Most people who've been abused don't do this, the ones that do have had issues long before they committed such crimes.

He had a bad childhood, his father was abusive. I don't think that is what made him a serial killer. Many people had really bad childhoods, they didn't turn into killers. Danny Rollin is just evil there is no other way to describe him.
Just because not all of them took a dark path doesn't mean some don't. You can't generalise things that way. That's not how the world works. It's not all black and white
@@slasherlady we can disagree but I don't think a bad childhood makes you a serial killer. You have to be born evil I don't think one day you just become evil. You may not show it for years but you have an evil born into you that you just can't escape. I don't know if you see a therapist early in life if that can help.

Both things can be true. Childhood trauma and abuse plays a part in our internal wiring. Some overcome it, some don’t. Same can be said for people who are born evil. Some are born that way, some aren’t. There are wonderful people who come from horrible homes and there are really bad people that come from wonderful homes. Simply put, the complexities of the human condition can’t be reduced to binary reasoning.

There are WAY too many people walking around with childhood trauma and while they might have issues as adults and/or problems adjusting to life as adults and learning to deal with their past but a VAST MAJORITY NEVER EVER go on to do the things this scumbag did. While his childhood might have been a contributing factor to why this piece of shit became a psychopath he was MORE than capable of deciding NOT to hurt those ppl. In the end, the trauma was just an excuse as it is with most of the people that do things like this.

Ultimately, he bears responsibility. But if one studies how a serial killer is born, there is an absolute connection between childhood abuse, trauma and brain development, and how a sociopath and ultimately, serial killer, is created. His childhood had all the classic underpinnings.

Childhood trauma is real. However, upon reaching young adulthood, it becomes an individual's choice how to react, or work through the residual emotions. I've known hundreds of people that had abusive parents, drug addicts for parents, neglectful parents, yet not one of them has become a murderer. A lot of them are still working through the emotional damage of their childhoods, yet they don't go out harming people because they themselves had been harmed. This is not a mental health issue, this is absolutely an evil issue. To do these horrible things to another human is the epitome of evil and I will not overlook such evil simply because it's being called "mental health problems." I will call it as it is - evil.
I'd bet that among those are closet psychopaths/malignant narcissists. Personally, I wouldn't date any man who grew up in a very abusive home.

I don't think he was playing the system in order to delay his execution. That was his lawyers or defense team that did that (for money?). If this killer really wanted to drag it out then why confess to the murders at the beginning of his trial? By confessing to his crimes he pretty much sealed his own fate.

I read about how his Dad , a police officer 👮♂️- physically abused Danny when he was growing up. His dad beat his dog & it died in Danny’s arms. Told that he was “unwanted”.

That maybe so, but he still had the capability to decide not to hurt those people. While childhood trauma was no doubt a factor, too many adults walk around with childhood trauma FAR WORSE than his , never to take another person's life away from them. It's become a go to excuse for sickos like him. Childhood abuse gives NO ONE the right to do the things he did. He could have made the decision not to but he chose to do those things and I hope to God he is burning for eternity.

Anyone ever notice that the majority of the most prolific serial killers were born in the late 40s-50s? I think this comes down to the lack of understanding of mental illness and straight disciplinary parenting.

My great-grandfather a gold panning french immigrant who spoke with a german accent (german immigrants were hated at the time), was murdered assaying his gold in Las Vegas. It is still impacting our family. Senseless and cruel causing a widow and orphans in the midst of the great depression. The only way through is to choose to be a success in spite of evil.

I was a kid adopted by 2 people who hated each other and they were very abusive. My "mother" was a mental case and my "father" was just mean as hell. They'd get into an argument he'd beat her then both would tell me how worthless the other one was. My "mother" would throw SEVERE temper tantrums. She almost wrecked our car once when I told her I didn't like the shoes she bought. Anything could set her off. It all ended in tragedy one evening in July. I won't get into specifics but my "father" died that day. It was as bad a childhood anyone could ever have and the trauma spans an entire lifetime.
Edit You'd be crazy to murder someone in Florida or Texas or any other state that has the death penalty. He's damn lucky they didn't use the electric chair like they did with Ted Bundy. I remember when they executed Bundy there was a local DJ that told everyone to turn off all electrical appliances at the time of his execution so they'd have plenty of electricity to kill him. 😅

@@fraserhawkins4462 I understand what you mean but changing one’s self thoughts and gathering resolve to do it is harder than you think it depends on a lot of things other than yourself it depends on your environment and the people you surround yourself with. Another thing is like to say is in psychology there is this psychological trait called psychoanalytic, this is where there is something traumatic that happen to you at a young age and in those moments you have no reaction or a way to understand and empathize for what has happened, so your younger self stored those memories far back in the mind but when you get older and perhaps an adult or maybe a teen those traumatic memories start flooding out and you then start reacting to them

I stopped watching these because they seem to constantly justify the murders. Many of us have had abusive pasts. This was pre cell phone video so we had no way of threatening to capture anything our parents were doing. BUT… Me and many others who were subject to this trauma NEVER harmed others. We may have harmed ourselves, but not others… I think giving excuses for this behavior justifies what they did… Sadly…
