  • I'm fairly well known for not being a The Beatles fan, but I can agree that they wrote some pretty decent songs... So with that in mind, I often like covers of their songs way better than the originals.
This is a great example - I think it's an awesome version of Strawberry Fields, but what really locks it in for me, is the synth solo at the end morphing into Hey Jude - simply brilliant!

I’ve been looking for this version for years. I first heard this when I worked at a clothing store (Petri’s) in Chapel Hill Mall - Akron. Ohio in 1990 in high school😂😁 Thanks for the memories!

That's so awesome! From 1992 through 2001, I was programming music for businesses, and I used this song on several programs! Glad you find this one again!

DJ Mike Brady That is awesome! I wondered how the music gets programmed at businesses- specifically clothing stores from that era and today.

Well back in that era, it was a really drawn out process... For accounts that received Custom programming (made just for them, as opposed to selecting from our general catalog) we would produce a demo each month. The demo was typically all the songs we proposed to use in that month's program, but usually just the chorus or hook. We'd send it to our contact at the business, usually the director of visual merchandising, and they'd give us a thumbs up or thumbs down. Some clients were REALLY picky about individual songs, while others would say "yeah, sounds good!" The really easy clients would only ask for a one hour demo to make sure we were on the right track, then let us fill in the other 3 hours on our own.
I never worked with Petri's but I know they were a customer - I worked for AEI Music Network, and we supplied music for most of the chains at any given mall of the day, plus most of the restaurants. Over my 9 years there, I personally did music for Williams-Sonoma, Lane Bryant, Avenue, Bennigan's, Steak & Ale, NikeTown, The Limited Too, and several others I can't remember. Plus we all contributed to the catalog library as well. The last few years I was there, we also produced CDs that were sold in the stores. By that time, I had moved to only part time programming, and my main role was Lead Recording Engineer - that meant putting the CDs together was my job. In that role, I did several CDs for Old Navy, Eddie Bauer, Lane Bryant, and others. It was seriously my dream job, until we merged with another company, and everything changed overnight.
These days, MOST stores just use Pandora or Satellite radio, and I can tell when I'm shopping that there's a lot less thought put into the music than there used to be. That's both good and bad, as some accounts were ridiculous with their demands, and others just saw us as the then-equivalent of the modern services.
One of the coolest feelings ever though, was going out to eat and recognizing one of my own programs playing! :)

DJ Mike Brady You learn something new everyday! So much goes into the planning of music and businesses - whether one is dining or shopping. Subliminal messages for the consumer☺️ Really it makes for a good experience and all the while spending time doing what you enjoy. Again, appreciate you sharing this - I’m going to share these facts with friends and family who always wondered about music tracks chosen. Thank you!

Awesome! I'm glad you mentioned it in the first place - I hadn't really thought about it in detail for many years, it was fun to go back there!

This is MUCH preferable to that dreadful Raspberry Ripple mix... One would think something as yummy-sounding as Raspberry Ripple would be tasty, but noooo!! :p This one's much nicer!

The raspberry ripple mix is better for after parties. Those 3-4 AM gatherings when everybody is flying on a different plain.
...not that I've ever been to such a party. 😎
