- A playthrough of Activision's 1989 NES game, Predator.
Based on the 1987 movie hit starring Arnie, Predator takes some interesting liberties with the film - does anyone remember these enemies or the neon pants? (Sounds a lot like Rambo too, doesn't it? Same developer!).
It's another game, again like Rambo, that is at its core not a bad game, but people talk about it like it's a festering buboe to avoid like... well, yeah, you get the idea.
The player moves too fast and he's a bit slippery, and good luck learning how to punch an enemy without taking a hit. Still though, after you get over its quirks and come to terms with its stiff difficulty level, it's an alright game.
And really, those "big" levels are both awful and amazing at the same time. I can't help but laugh when I get to them.

I remember seeing Predator in theaters back in 87. I was so freaked out by the butterflies and flying jellyfish. Chills me to this very day.
I saw a video where someone was playing and they said we were supposed to have Arnold but we got Brett Hart instead. I died laughing!!

I love it when a game sticks closely to the source material.
Which it clearly didn't in this poor man's Contra.
That being said, I remember when I was about 6 and saw this at the local Toys R Us. (in 1989). Weird that video games are about the same then as they are now ($60).
The $60 back then would be worth more in today's money. $60 in 1990 is worth about $136 today. I was just looking at generation 2 console prices and some of them sold for what would be around $800 in today's money. Video games and consoles have actually gone down in price over time accounting for inflation.

He had the rights to judge those movie based games are actually so loosely based on the movies themselves, but not all games are in unplayable state bad or unbearably unfair or something, they are just logically laughable braindead. He did eventually figured out how to beat Jerkyl and Hyde a year ago. But things looked good on surface that had unforgivable difficulty and lags - tmnt, here it is, actually hurts me more
Friday the 13th is actually developed by Atlus, the one created Persona for us eventually, had okay designs with dungeon crawling stuff and good music composing stuff back in the days. It is just the games are over complicated, even the manual won't explain then briefly. The game design is pretty unfair, but it is possible to beat it
Why is it that the bad NES games always manage to have amazing music?
Cuz they knew the music was the strongest thing they had so they had to truly perfect that part of the game..

I guess I must've missed that part in the movie where Dutch dons a pink suit and fights paramecium, jellyfish, butterflies, and birds that shat bloody diarrhea on him!
It's just embarrassing how they put Arnold Schwarzenegger in pink jumpsuit pants in this game LOL

I actually think this is a decent game. You have to remember that sometimes movie-based games were being developed as the movies were being worked on, so the developers probably had no idea what the film was going to be like, so they had to use their imagination as to what they thought might be in the movie.
Also, if you really do think this game is bad, check out the version it's based on, the MSX version. You'll be begging for the NES version. The NES version fortunately only uses the graphics and music from the MSX version. The only thing that disaster of a game has over the NES version is that Schafer is wearing blue as opposed to pink.
In addition, I think Activision/Pack-In-Video more than made up for this game when they released Die Hard for the NES a few years later. Quite possibly the best movie based game of all time, for the NES at the very least.
You realize that the Studio has to sign off whenever a game is being created using a movie they created, right? I guarantee you there has NEVER been a movie to video game adaptation where the devs just guessed what it was going to be like... LMFAO 🤣😂🤣

I loved gremlins 2, jaws, Jurassic park and empire Strikes back so much more. Top notch. Movie games. Also Alien 3!!!
I think this is a decent game, too. If you judge licensed games solely on if they do justice to the license, then of course games like this are going to look like garbage.
This actually plays pretty well despite some frustration with the jumps (it controls better than you might think), and the multiple routes make it fun for replays.
The music in this game gave me night terrors for years to come.

Can't say that predator in this game is the sharpest tool in the shed, just shooting and backflipping all the time. ;) Doesn't really seem like a great hunter if you ask me. Also, this game is so bizarre it's kinda incredible. Reminds me of that King Kong 2 game by Konami on the Famicom in which you could kill murderous ducks with teeth in a city area. Licensed games back then weren't exactly too faithful to their source material...

Konami seriously loved their razor-teethed ducks - they made an appearance in Esper Dream and in one of the Wai Wai Worlds I think. And yeah, that movie is exactly what I thought of when I played that game for the first time! :)
Never even knew this existed. The background graphics remind me of metroid. Interesting how it switches between two different gameplay modes, kinda like Jaws.
some Japanese games would feature this Big Mode combat, like some Power Ranger games on Nes which got you fight like a Ping Pong game. That is unpredictable, so random

Like Rambo on the NES, I would not be against the idea of a Predator movie based on the video game version. Major Dutch Schaefer running around in a pink uniform shooting a laser gun at armies of multicolored Power Ranger Predators? Couldn't possibly be worse than Alien vs Predator 2.

the best thing about them was they were ready to play the minute you turn them on, unless it's an arcade machine. my nintendo, sega genesis, gameboy, and game gear still work. my xbox 360 and ps4 died already.

Ah yes. Predator on the NES. Where the creators saw it fit to demoralize the most masculine character into wearing pink pants with Ugs for boots. While playing a sound track similar to Disney's Ducktail's & Beating the crap out of enemies that would fit better in an R-Type game. I still loved this game, dont ask me why.

I remember when I was a kid my father rented this for me from Blockbuster. When he gave me the game he asked me if I wanted to go to the movies to see Home Alone or stay home and play the game. I was such a homebody I said I want to stay and play the game. 😂😂😂😂

One travesty of a game, actually, more like a half-assed middle-school project. Does the movie no justice. I commend the player for sheer skill in playing it.

This game is a record of everything Dutch did when the camera was panned away from him during the movie. Blooper reels show him using his prop rifle to play baseball with a laughing, floating head.

Well I was impressed by the quality of the graphic to realistic ratio of the images.
The Predators(Yautja) hunts and kills anybody armed. Men, women, children, dogs, cats, birds!
I remember being quite disappointed with this game 😂 and my older brother who loved predator didn’t like his pink jeans lol

It’s crazy how the cinematic presentation and cutscenes were really good, plus an amazing soundtrack….but the gameplay is absolutely terrible.
They don't make them like this anymore, Arnold in pink trousers is a bit far I think but you never know these days , the butterflys are awesome random but cool if that's your thing ,the music might not be to everyone's taste again if that's your thing and your happy then that's what matters .

Really feel bad and pity for the game developer, when the main enemy is just the Predator, what else can you put in the game for the player to fight with? At least they tried to make it challenging. The final boss is just LOL Moment, especially the end credit. I will just buy this game for just the cover alone... (with just 2 bar left you manage to beat the final boss is just as intense like in the movie, heheh)
