  • Installing FCS 2 fin boxes on a surfboard. This is an EPS high performance shortboard with a thruster fin setup. I used the Terry Senate Fin Marker for fin placement, the FCS 2 router jig, FCS router bit and a variable speed router to cut out the fin cavities. I used the FCS 2 dummy fins to tape the fin boxes in place with the correct fin cant angle. Fin boxes were installed with Greenlight's marine grade epoxy resin and cabosil.

      Yup! Tommy knows his stuff! Helps with getting the correct cant angles and has some convenient cutouts for the tape. They also don’t snap in like normal FCS 2 fins so they can release easily.

      @@BendheimBoards Thanks for answering the question I was going to ask about the dummy fins. If they were anything like my real FCS2's I'd snap that blank in half trying to get it out.

    • @BendheimBoards
      @BendheimBoards  Pƙed 3 lety +1

      Yeah it would be impossible not to screw it up. I’ve also used FCS 1 fins before I had the dummy ones which also works since they don’t go into the locking mechanism although not as convenient as they overlap the foam a little.

      They come with the fin boxes. Or you can just get some 3M 233+ tape and cover the fin holes and use a razor to cut out the shape.

    Wasn’t paying attention when you poured part 1, I thought you absolutely nuked poly resin with catalyst on an EPS board, good stuff man! Are you going to seal the board? I hate EPS for many reasons but when finished they’re almost worth it for me! Enjoy!

    • @BendheimBoards
      @BendheimBoards  Pƙed 3 lety

      Haha poly resin would be a big no no. Not planning to seal the blank so we’ll see how lamination goes. Doing pigmented colors. First time with EPS and epoxy so I’m excited to test it all out. But I do like PU blanks better as well.

    • @zachfetter5710
      @zachfetter5710 Pƙed 3 lety +1

      @@BendheimBoards no need to really seal if you’re doing pigment from my vast 2 out of 30 boards being EPS. I’m sure a professional glasser would say it will add weight since resin will fill the holes but I didn’t notice. Real light. Too expensive. Can’t wait to see the vid!

    Do you take into account contour of the tail when setting fin angels? I built my first board, was probably overthinking it, and shimmed the jig to level so the plug would be squared to level not to the bottom of the boardof the board

    • @BendheimBoards
      @BendheimBoards  Pƙed 3 lety

      For this board I just followed the angle the board gave me. I did a board with channels where I did have to compensate for the uneven bottom.

    Out of interest is there a distinct difference in size of fin box between the FSCII and FCS Fusion? Or can you just use the same jig/bits for both?

    Hi tanner I’m thinking about making a fcs 2 jig plate instead of buying one bought I’m just not sure if I need to put right and left line on it to get the correct fine placement or are they just for putting toe in the fine

    • @BendheimBoards
      @BendheimBoards  Pƙed 3 lety

      Those are definitely needed to get the correct lines. I mark the toe with my fin marker, not with the jig. Good luck man, that’s gonna be tricky to make!

    I am building my first board and by the routing out for the fin boxes I gone 1.5-2mm to deep. What should I do now? Should I leave it like that and install them at this lower level ? (Using fcs Fusion+silmar)

    • @BendheimBoards

      I’d cut some flat pieces of foam to fill the bottom or use patches of folded fiberglass to fill it and get them level with the board. Just make sure you check the fin angles aren’t messed up

      It's possible but difficult. I've done it with a dremel before. You could try starting with a razor blade and a small piece of sandpaper. It will just take a very long time. Don't use a jigsaw, that won't work.
