  • The latest pioneering project from Calum MacCrimmon and John Mulhearn’s Big Music Society sees ten contemporary piper/composer/producers commissioned to write new music in the spirit of their instrument’s classical, often ceremonial or commemorative, Ceòl Mòr tradition. Compositions from MacCrimmon, Mulhearn, Finlay MacDonald, Rory Campbell, Ross Ainslie, Ali Hutton, Steven Blake, Lorne MacDougall, James Duncan Mackenzie and Mairearad Green will variously enlist the whole ensemble on additional pipes, instruments and voices.
This is their debut performance recorded live at the Scots Trad Music Awards in Dundee, December 2016.

I like this kind of mass piping, but you have to realize that pipers in Scotland and Ireland did not have music books or even music in written form, so all of those perfectly executed embellishments would not have been as feasible in the days before the British poked their noses into Scottish and Irish heritage. Natural piping is what I do, yet i am looked down upon by the perfectionists in bands as if I were dirt and it really annoys me.

You’ve obviously hung around with the wrong type of unnatural pipers then

Are you trying to say that you play unclean embellishments and that’s apparently the proper way?

@@adamdavanna6229 I'm saying that the "proper way" was invented long after bagpiping was a well established artform, so there is no proper way unless you want there to be.

But thats just how it is - you cant deny it. And to put tgey arguement forward of there was no music back in the day, carries no weight as theres music now.
