Remember this beauty from The Grand Tour Namibia Special? Well James May clearly fell in love with it, and bought it from the production and restored it. In this video, James explains his decision...

cool
No. I'd have taken it on the beach!
I would love to try James's Gin but unfortunately I can't order it and I'm only in Ireland.
Why does he call it a beach buggy? All of the Californians I knew who owned one (and I'm older than James) called a Dune buggy. But I suppose that James would do some rant about renaming the "symbol of oppression" (which it never was in the U.S.A.) to a weird Science Fiction novel.

James May is starting to look more and more like a mad scientist by the second
Well, because he is.

"it's impossible to be miserable when you're driving a beach buggy"
Someone clearly doesn't remember the Namibia Special.
Getting old is tough.
“unless you’re driving on a beach” was my thought also.
I think it was referenced sarcasm
Wait until he gets caught in a rain storm; he'll be pretty miserable when he finds himself sitting in 3" of water!
@@saxon-mt5by He was sitting in 3" of much worse stuff in a Caterham in the Madagascar special.
I love how Drivetribe is like a grassroots Top Gear where the hosts (well, James May mainly) can be themselves and not have the BBC or Amazon breathing down their necks. Speaking of which, I wonder if Bezos is peeved that James has made his own internet car show.
To me it seems like the Grand Tour started off without Amazon meddling, then by Season/series 3 they were meddling with it. The whole 'finding the treasure' script was just cheesey and not in a likable way. Same for Richard and Tory's island show
I doubt it. May on CZcams will drive people to watch shows with him on APV and vice versa. It's mutually beneficial.
@@startedtech You're entitled to your own opinion, but I enjoyed all 4 seasons of TGT, and I can't wait for more...though some of the most recent specials (shot in 2019, IIRC) seem like the producers are just trying to make the trio miserable, and I end up feeling sorry for them. They keep coming back for more, though, so either they're quite comfortable off camera, or they really don't mind.
Agreed. Too scripted. I couldn't watch two episodes of that Richard+Tory show. It was horrible... I expected some light hearted Bear Grylls kind of show. With them attempting to make cars on time like masterchef. Instead we are presented with extremely cheesey, highy scripted garbage..
@@JobiWan144 I feel like they're desperate to recapture the feeling of the Mongolia Special (or they were with the first two specials of season 4). The boat one was half decent. The pirate one felt incredibly forced and scripted. And the two most recent ones just feel like an extended version of the little trips they'd go on in the regular episodes. Only problem with the last two was the fact that there wasn't any of the stuff that they'd do in the tent that added variety.
It's funny how the main joke about James on Top gear was that he was from the past, but judging from now he has adapted the best to the youtube/online format and viewerbase. These car reviews and his other videos on the TRIBE channels are great!
"And I have a message for you, dear viewers..." Nailed it. This is the most James May that James May has ever James Mayed.
Haha, that had me in bits. And his laugh you could see shortly haha. Great fun.
These videos don't get enough of the views it deserves.

It was a success in spite of its beginnings.

Seeing how unique yet individually entertaining Clarkson, May and Hammond are makes you understand how and why anything the three of them have done altogether just work so well
This is why James May is a legendary presenter! He knows how to talk on camera with ease and confidence. I feel like I'm watching Toy stories or Man Lab. This is better than your standard CZcams video! Fantastic Mr. MAY!
Production has immensely improved. Almost on par with the TG/GT
indeed! every 6 months the DT videos get markedly better
You can tell he missed making old school TG / GT style content. And I missed seeing it.
Except for that whole Halfords clickbaity mess that was the Mondeo top speed video...

Interesting that the abbrevations are swapped between The grand tour and fifth gear... TG and GT

The beach buggy is super cool.
Id do an EV conversion tho.
Life just wouldn't be as funny without James, Jeremy and Hammond. Thanks for the laughs gentleman!
I am the third owner of my VW Buggy! The original owner was a Freightliner engineer and converted the Bug to a Buggy. It was driven in the Baja and is a rare body style produced in Phoenix Arizona back in the day. It was pretty worn buy the first and second owners and I have completely restored the vehicle. It's all about preserving History and I'm happy to be a part of it. I wanted one when I was 15 but I have one now and it gets lost ot looks. I love it!
I've always been a fan of how James does his "piece to camera", every where from cars to travel and now cooking it has this special rhythm, and even here on DriveTribe it's top quality! Truly awesome!
Let’s just appreciate James saying “Bussin”
@Gillie Monger He said both of them, He said Bussin before Bostin
@Gillie Monger bussin
very cool; i remember my dad having one of these in the late 70's and I still recall how much fun that thing was to tour in
I was expecting the "bussin" line but it still hit me like a ton of bricks
For once, James is right, he really does look cool in the Beach Buggy, honestly Hammond and May are both aging extremely well.
Clarkson, not so much.
I’ll take aging over dead tbh
May looks like a cool weird guy I’d meet in a California gas station on my way to the beach.
Clarkson also is a lot older than Hammond.
Well Clarkson's a farmer now, he's embracing manual labor so atleast he's finally done something that's not infantile
Isn’t Clarkson 10 years older than Hammond?
That cheeky smile at the very end.... oh James never change lol
Even to someone who isn't really into cars that thing looks so fun.
Memories of the old Speed Buggy cartoons
About 37 years ago, i stripped a clapped out beetle, hot dipped the chassis, and slowly built it up over 9 months. it was a fun project, put a roll cage on which dramatically improved the handling as well. Had a roll up vinyl top for rain, a paddle ski strapped on top of the roll cage. A reconditioned beetle motor, pushing out all of 45 hp but it was surprisingly nippy. Great fun! drove it many times on the beach, it was only 500kg (1100 lbs to the poorly educated), so it would scamper across sand dunes rather like -a sand beetle. Never got stuck, could even tow a small trailer. Got married, 4 kids later so swapped the buggy for a 1996 VW T3 combi with a Golf 1,8lt motor, which was the best vehicle i ever had-not a moments trouble for 10 years, the kids loved it, great for holidays , great workhorse, but my brother in law wrote it off in 2006..ah well...
I am so proud of of May, he looks younger by the day

OK, James has half a British pub, his own gin, and a beach buggy. I think he's now complete.
