SGU had great SFX, an awesome premise, and a solid cast. What killed the show was the writing style which the fans did not like.
The writers were trying to catch the Battlestar Galactica lightning in a bottle for themselves, but Stargate fans did not care for the darker, sexier, and grittier tone that worked for Galactica but just did not transfer well over to Stargate's fanbase.

The ancients were near extinction, and before leaving the milky way used the decara device to manipulate the biology of certain species throughout the galaxy to evolve along their lines. The show is not realistic based on the Ancients capabilities because then there wouldn't be a show. They could have put 3 or 12 ZPM's on an Aurora class ship. Imagine the possibilities. Shield and weapons would be no match for anything. Even with just 1 ZPM they could resupply the ship with an endless amount of drones and ZPM's. If they can cloak something as large as Atlantis they could have made a support ship to cloak an entire fleet. They could also use that Stargate idea as another weapon source to beam a weapon through it like the Asuran's did with the satellite. Funny how it was the humans that thought of beaming nukes to the enemy ship. The ancients could have done something similar such as beam clusters of drones closer to the target. The Asuran's were the perfect creation. All they had to do was make them go kill the Wraith. Or here's an idea, make replicators that look like Wraith and go start wars between them. As for Atlantis, the earth government would have 2000 scientists going through that whole city for technology. It likely had the facilities to create a significant amount of technology including ZPM's.

What is important about the starship Destiny is not its "power", but its capacity to travel faster than light without going hyperspatial. As many scientists say, any body faster than light would go back in time. And as Dr. Rush said somewhere in the second season, the Ancients found intelligent signals from the beginning of the Universe, and the Destiny was designed to reach the origin of that signals... Maybe, to meet God physically. But when the Ancients "ascended" and transcended their physical bodies, they didn't need more the ship and was abandoned in the middle of its travel.

      Spoilers...
      ....
There is a series of SGU comics that take place a few weeks after the end of the show. There Eli finds four of the original engineers who created Destiny in stasis, who had been trapped on the ship when it was launched. After resolving a good deal of conflict between the expedition and the ancient engineers, it was discovered that the four were sick and to cure them it was necessary to produce doses of synthetic Tretonim. When searching for ingredients, it was inevitable to come into conflict with those murderous drones. To ensure better chances, the chief engineer activated a legion of maintenance robots that repaired much of the ship's damage, released weapons controls, and activated the auxiliary reactors for more energy. With that, Destiny was now far superior to drones. In the end, the expedition could not use the self-repair functions simply because they did not have sufficient access permission. In the end, the team now has old engineers, a repaired ship, complete weapons control, more energy capacity, and access to the cargo areas that were blocked by damage, which contained, in addition to materials, a complete collection of seeds for the hydroponic bays.

The Aurora-class might also be capable of harnessing energy from stars similar to the Destiny and seedships. Such technology would still be very useful, even after the invention of ZPM's. Given an that an Aurora's method of generating power has yet be specified, harvesting energy from stars seems to be the likely possibility. Yes, a ZPM can power an Aurora but this is an optional power source and not the default.

You realize that the Destiny casually swooped into stars for fuel, when that same action nearly killed other Stargate ships? It also took so many beatings from countless warships trying to seize it, that it's existence became legendary across multiple galaxies that thought to chase it; by the time our team gets to the Destiny, it's old.... like.... really really old.
Like looking at a 120 year old war veteran forced back into active combat whom proceeds to keep up with all the other soldiers, then saying, "...compared to them, I don't see what's so special about this war hero. He's pretty average, and others are outperforming him a bit more."

Investment might also be a big player in the topic as well. A standard destroyer or capitalship probably got alot less resources and specialization then destiny did. The general feeling you got from the show is the ship had an answer for everything. No matter what it was. And you had a completely different contextual feeling for an aurora or the orion for instance. powerful and technologically advanced. but no where near as versatile . I imagine in its hay day, with all *secrets* revealed the destiney would probably be more than a match for any ship in the stargate universe. barring, maybe the ori and tauri ships

In defense, it should be close to top, if not top of SG (known) universe. If I remember right, in one episode, they found second Destiny, almost destroyed, that even with its age, managed to go INSIDE star to open gate back to earth. I mean, yeah, it created bunch of time anomalies and and permanently damaged it, but fact, it travel through star and someone survived it (so life system vere somehow still working) is damn impressive. (I think they even go through exact centre of star, but maybe I remember wrong). Did it use energy of star to power shields? Yes, but it wasn't in best condition. Destiny could probably travel through both Pegasus and Ori galaxy and survive it (if Ori doesn't personally come to fight). Could it beat them all? Probably not, but it would survive them.

I wonder if they didn't have drone tech when they made Destiny, or if they just opted not to use it favoring energy projectors over ammunition based weapons. If the Destiny had drones it would likely need a drone manufacturing area to resupply them, or else be reliant on resupply through it's stargate.

    • @jhmcd2
      @jhmcd2 Před rokem +3

I think they originally (or at least in one of the backgrounds of the show) explain this. Destiny was built just after the ancients arrive in the Milky Way. So whatever tech is on the ship is mostly likely tech they brought from the Ori galaxy. The drone weapons appear to only be present in systems that were built just prior to their evacuation of the Milky Way, such as the weapons platform in Antarctica and Atlantis (and that one that means lost in fire). Since the Milky Way was uninhabited when the ancients arrived (this isn't said specifically, but given their terraforming activities using the device at Dekara its assumable that it was), so its doubtful their would have been much weapons development until the Ori rediscovered them. This would make it logical that the Ori would use a virus to wipe them out if they were able to push their weapons tech, and why the drones were so powerful and would remain their main defensive weapons for another 30 million years. That means it most likely pre-dates that tech by several million years.

Another reason the Destiny didn´t use drones is probably that drones are basically self-flying projectiles. Much like small rockets. So if the Destiny used those, it eventually would have run out of "ammo" (meaning drones).
We learn in Stargate Atlantis, that there are storage units in the City for the drones and that they were pretty much depleted. Which means even after the city was reactivated by the humans from earth, no automatic production started. Given that this was millions of years of advancement after the Destiny was launched, it is reasonable to assume they didn´t have the technology to automate the process back then, either. Or they just decided drones were not necessarily needed and difficult to automatically produce so they chose other weapons... or drones weren´t invented, yet.

Most characters never change either which is a problem with going the "hero's" route of character development.
May is a good example. IOA member and rep and all she does is constantly go against any military action on everything. Her character started off anti military and kept that stance. Eli was a man child and rush makes that comparison more than once. And at the end Eli is left out. But he doesn't change much either. Nothing against the show. The explanation that the destiny was going to find what emitted a signal encoded in the background radiation seems strange anyway. The radiation was emitted 13.6 billion years ago and even if we had a hyperdrive or warp drive to travel to the cosmic horizon we would just find more galaxies similar to our own as it's now. If the ancients wanted to find the source they needed a time machine (super puddle jumper) to go back in time to near the big bang and can remain in the precursor to the milky way galaxy.
They might even done that and found the knowledge required for Ascension. A rogue member could then disclose the secret to the Ori as there was a rogue member to spread the prior plague.

Which means destiny can travel millions of lights years, in just a year or two.. If you do the math then 13.6 billion light years to the get the big bang means it wont take as long as you think for destiny to get there. The distance between the milky way and Pegasus is 3 million light years, so lets assume its 3 million between that first galaxy they were in and the new one they got to with the drones.. Rush said it would take a few weeks to gap that distance.. This means they destiny has probably been through BILLIONS of galaxies

We have to take into account that ship is old , much older than the Gate of Milk Way ( who was around 60 Millions years old) So it is pretty much reasonable that ship is not in great performance . Still , the fact they have a ship that could litterally sundiving and maintain the shield for i don't know how many minutes or Hours it get to it . We know that the Ship could even go to O-star class and maintaining a good condition even if the inside of the Starship was heated for around few hundreds degree Celsius . Now as for the weapons , like the Shield , they are limited due to the State of the ship . I mean in the simulation generated by the IA , the Destiny cannot go above a certain threshold before it blow up and take several kilometers around it .
As for the comment by the Ha'tak . I have to keep in mind that the Ha'tak non upgraded by Anubis could keep his shield around 9-12 hours (can't remember ) and have a firepower maximum to a few hundred megatons . If we stay coherent with the series and keep a open-minded state , this ship could be in theory maybe more advanced than the Ha'tak in term of performance but will fail against the technological peers such as the Asgard , more recent Alterran ships and Ori .

Agree with the assessment regarding the Asgards; however in my the Tauri while still have Asgard tech I think would be inferior in a head to head combat that's because most of the feats that you compare them too is usually because they had access to ZPM which greatly enhanced their Offensive and Defensive capabilities. That said if the Tauri sends multiple ships I think they could over whelm them but unless Destiny is threatening Earth; that probably won't be the case in my mind Earth would send one ship then 2 or 3 too match threat. That said in mind Destiny tech (even at 40%) stands a top of Tauri and matching or below Asgards. That said great video and summary.

Well, yes and no that the Destiny did not have a crew. In the canon comic series, it was revealed that Ancient Engineers had been aboard when the ship was accidentally launched. They could not be recalled, and needed to get a certain distance before the Stargate would work. So, they went into cryo awaiting the crew that was supposed to come. That never happened. With their knowledge of the ship, they managed to effect long delayed repairs.

One of the biggest problems with power scaling the Destiny is that we never really saw it go up against anything we know. All of the enemies the Destiny fought were unknown aliens. For all we know, one of those alien frigates could destroy an Asgardian battle ship with ease.
Same problem DBZ has with power scaling. Once they are SS3, any chump that can land a punch on them could also destroy a solar system, but chumps will still get chumped, throwing off the power scaling.

It's distracting that you refer to Wraith Hives as "Motherships, lol.
Also, In terms of shielding and energy weapons, the Asgard had far exceeded the Ancients by the time of their death. The Asgard plasma beam weapons are some of the most potent weapons we ever see in stargate only possibly being surpassed by the Ori Mothership main weapons. Ancient drones were nowhere near as potent, at least against shielded enemies.
The Asgard also had some of the most powerful and fastest hyperdrive system ever invented. Only being surpassed in speed by the Ancient Wormhole Drive.
The only area we have any reason to believe the Asgard never surpassed or even reached the Ancients technology wise, is compact power generation. The ZPM is the most potent "man-made" power generation/storage technology we ever see in the franchise, and we never have any reason to believe the Asgard have anything comparable, at least at that size, as their ships were powered by huge Neutrino-Ion Generators. The Asgard Core we see installed on the Odessey has some form of advanced power core as well, but we do not know how powerful it is.
Other than that, interesting video. I always enjoy some good stargate content.

Destiny is always as strong as it is in the script. One time it can withstand extreme weapons and point fire, the next time a speck of dust flying by causes massive damage. It's like in all films and series. If we forget all that, Destiny is impressive. You just have to think about how long the ship has been on the move. The AI always steers the ship to where the necessary resources are...I just wonder how the ship was able to fly for so long without a crew to recover these resources. But it's not just Destiny, but also the vanguard ships that search for suitable planets and place stargates.
I enjoy the series, it's a shame it was never continued, and I don't think about technical accuracy and plausibility. That's how you should do it, look, enjoy and forget the rest. If you think about it, you will hardly find a film or series in which everything is right.

well for a more even comparison you would have to look at the ship each race had at the time, so what was everyone packing 50million years ago. At its time I am sure it was the biggest baddest ship out there being that the ancients would want their ship even automated to be able to handle any and every threat it might encounter. This is like comparing the British Long bow to a modern sniper rifle. sure they both shoot things at "long range" but, one is obviously more advanced. Unless its the same time frame it going to be an comparing apples to orangutans type of scenario.

By the end of the series, only 10% of the ship was actually explored, and you forgot to include the 2 seed ships and the 2 shuttles designed to dock with Destiny and give it more power. I'm pretty sure that Destiny also had a hanger bay for smaller crafts like the puddle jumpers. As a wraith hive mothership, it would actually lose a battle against a Destiny with full operational systems. While yes, it was designed as an exploration ship, it was also designed as a combat ship. All of the ancient ships were designed with 2 configurations first as both exploration and combat and second as a dedicated science/combat ship.

In its heyday it was probably state of the art. Even as an explorer, I cannot see the ship not being launched without the latest in Ancient tech. However, 30+ million years is a long time. I think at its healthiest it could take on a Wraith Hive ship as long as it knew it was coming, but now I don't think its a mach for most the regular species in the Stargate pantheon. In fact, it seems to have problems with most of the species it comes across and none of them seem to be on the level for even the early season G'ould forces. Honestly, I think that, even before the SGC came across the ship it was doomed to never complete its mission. By the end of SGU, and this is how it plays out in my head cannon, the ship simply never makes it and fails. The ship simply had too much damage and was simply not efficient enough to make that last jump.

I could see the next season starting by revealing Rush had secretly programmed his stasis pod to awaken him at a certain point, if Eli still hadn't cracked the problem.
Rush loved secretly programming things afrer all, and his character arc sure looked like it was getting toward a healthier emotional state.
So, Rush comes out, maybe even a little aged because of ship damage, and now rested, helps Eli put a fresh pair of eyes on the problem.

Limited resources, lack of fabrication equipment, and limited skilled manpower. While we see some repairs made it isn't specified how they get the materials to repair the ship. One such repair is when the damaged shuttle is patched over with a metal plate. Presumably a panel stripped off something unimportant. The crew was abandoning Icarus and assuming they were going to Earth, starship materials were not on the "grab this" list. It did puzzle me how they had so much of some of the things they did.
We see one repair bot on Destiny. It's utilized to make some repairs but knowing how it gets materials (cannibalizing from other systems, some kind of matter conversion, or some other method) is unknown.

  • @jeepsblackpowderandlights4305

I dont think the ship is as powerfull as the asgard ships.. maybe the sheilds yes.. but the weapons are pretty lacking on the destiny, we do know destinys weapons though are at half strength due to being shown one of those power devices the alternate rush was trying to get when he accidentially killed colonel Talverd. The Earth vessels later on use Phaser type energy weapons, but the early earth vessels dont, so i think the destiny is probably in between the earth vessels and asgard, but deffinetly way more powerfull than the go'auld. Another issue though of course is age, things age and wear out and destiny is worn out.. The think MAIN issue though is power Even at full power destiny really lacks , routinly even when at full power 40% or probably more i think they managed to increase its power reserves later on.. We constantly see destiny running out of power ALL the time, after just 1 battle..

Oof you said a few wrong things here. first you said that destiny was built like 15 million years ago. I am pretty sure the destiny was built around earth something like 50-60 million years ago. Atlantis was built already something like 15 million years ago or close to it at that point. Also you said the Ancients could no longer travel to destiny because they ascended. they can go pretty much wherever they want at that point but it doesn't hold any interest to them anymore. Basically, things like atlantis and destiny are so far beneath them they just dont give a crap anymore.
Also you said that Tauri Tech is mostly Asgard tech. again, this is false. The Tauri had their own tech but ships were later retrofitted with Asgard tech like shields, sensors, beaming and hyperdrives then weapons. Daedalus still relied upon missiles and those wannabe rail guns if you even want to call those pile of shits a railgun. however, Prometheus didn't have any Asgard tech initially.
I would put destinys tech somewhere between Asgard and Gould tech. however that doesn't make a lot of sense to say. The Ancients designed their own tech and they focused on things like shields, sensors and FTL/hyperdrives. They didn't care that much about weapons. The Asgard cared more about weapons because they considered themselves noble warriors. The Gould also cared about weapons and shields but all their stuff is just reverse-engineered Ancient tech so they don't exactly design new stuff. The Asgard are really the only ones on the list other than the Tauri that design and innovate their own tech.
So tech is cool and all and means a lot but it really needs a lot of context. Take our carnival cruise liners which are vastly superior in tech to say a 3 masted warship from 1880 but that 3 masted warship could probably destroy that carnival cruise liner. You did touch on that a bit with what the purpose of Destiny is. it isn't designed to be a warship, so other than the stuff listed pretty good video.
