  • I’ve lived with type 1 diabetes since 1997 and what I eat has a huge impact on my blood sugars and my overall well-being.
    Since a lot of you have asked, here’s a video of what I eat in a day as well as my detailed carb count.
    Remember, this is not me recommending a way of eating. This is just what I ate last Sunday.
    If you’re into low carb meals, you can find a lot of low carb recipes on the Diabetes Strong website HERE ► diabetesstrong.com/recipes/

    I was diagnosed with diabetes type 2 a few years ago. Nobody really showed me about it, so I was told I can eat what I wanted. Nope. So I had all kinds of issues till I started looking at my diet. It made a huge difference but still higher than normal for blood sugars. The medicine for pens is not helpful when it still gets me down that I gain weight from the insulin. This video was extremely helpful! Thank you.

    Thank you! That was very helpful because I also want to track carbs and keep them lower and healthy without the constraints of a specific diet plan. I normally eat plenty of protein and veg and some lower carb fruits. I have removed pasta, rice, potatoes from my lineup. I decided crackers and bread is something I can't live without because I love the convenience they offer. I knew the 2 areas I would need help in finding low carb options was bread/crackers and sweet treats. I've tried some keto breads and they seemed to spike my sugar. That was a shock. I'll keep searching. I'll have to check out your bread brand, sugar free yogurt, and your kind slim bars. The sound like good options.

In my case it was before I got the type 1 (LADA) diagnosis, and it really didn't work for me, causing extreme leg cramps and far too much weight loss. I'm still quite low carb, probably about 90g per day (I'm a 78Kg man) and I'd like to eat more because I exercise a LOT, but I'm still learning how to increase carbs without spiking my blood sugar higher than I want to

In light of what the American diet is your meals look very healthy and balanced I too use the low carb bread to keep things low carb. If I go below 50 carbs I start heading in keto acidosis I was put in the hospital for that so now I eat a little more carbs. Great video and oh My I love the View Of the water very nice 👍👍🌷

    I like that you are flexible in treating your diabetes. I hate it when I'm hungry, it's hours before the next meal, and feel that you cannot eat something to get you by until the next meal. Eat some carbs to satisfy and dose some insulin to cover it. Better to do that then to totally pig out at the next meal and have to deal with whatever the consequences of that binge has in store for you later on. If you can't find out how to be flexible, you have totally limited any options. Makes a for boring existence and not a pleasant person to be around.

    May I ask a question? First of all I'm new to your channel and I'm so happy I found it. I've watched many of your videos, especially the Dexcom ones as we are new to that (20days in). My 10yr old son was diagnosed T1D in June 2022, my question is I see some people subtract the dietary fiber from the carb count serving and some don't. I did ask his diabetes team about this and they said to only count the total carbs and do not subtract the dietary fiber. I know everyone is different and I will follow his teams advice; but I wanted to know why you subtract the DF from carbs per serving. You're very knowledgeable and I just wanted to pick your brain. My son will start his insulin pens today and we are very excited. I did purchase the insulin pen carrier from Amazon that you recommended. I'll wait to get the fridge, let's see how the small canister does first. Again thank you for all your valuable information.

    • @DiabetesStrong
      @DiabetesStrong  Před 2 lety +2

      Thank you, and welcome to the channel ❤️You're right, there is somewhat conflicting guidance on whether to subtract fibers. If I don't, and bolus for the full carb count, I'll for the most part end up with low blood sugars. However, it's mainly relevant for me when I eat very high-fiber meals such as big bowls of veggies. But you're right, we are all different, but I think you might find this article on carb counting (written by an RN and CDCES) interesting diabetesstrong.com/carb-counting/

      How much insulin we each need to cover our food is very individual. The thing I would ask your husband’s doctor is what his carb ratio is, so you can help guide him. The carb ratio is how much insulin per gram of carbs. For example, a ratio of 1:10 would mean that one unit of mealtime insulin would cover 10 grams of carbs

    • @dwightl5863
      @dwightl5863 Před 2 lety

      I can see how you can gain weight when using a pump because it is so easy to bolus for any and everything you eat. Bottom line is if you eat more carbs/calories then you use and burn up during the day you will gain weight. That is a true statement even for the non diabetic as well.

    • @DiabetesStrong
      @DiabetesStrong  Před 2 lety

      Initial weight gain when you start insulin is normal, some is water some is fat. I maintain my weight because I'm not in a calorie surplus, meaning I don't consume more energy than I spend running around living. That's a bit of a simplification but if you do want to lose fat, you have to look at your diet and adjust the calorie intake. Often when we do that we end up with a lot of low blood sugars, so you'll also need to adjust your insulin levels

    • @indaneym
      @indaneym Před rokem +1

      i am a brittle type 1 diabetic for 16 years and i've been eating roughly 20 grs of carbs worth of einkorn/rye/whole-wheat bread for my lunchs and dinners. my ha1c is 5.5 and i'm not overweight or anything, having blood tests every 4-5 months, got no problems whatsoever.
      I know going 200 and then going 50 will average 125 on ha1c levels, whereas solid 125 is.. well 125. so you just need to count your proteins(i never eat fried stuff and barely use any butter/oil in my food so i just disregard fat alltogether when counting for insulin, unless i'm doing something crazy) accordingly and bolus properly for it.
      eating bread(or raw carb for that matter) is risky for exercise days from my experience, but i've found the solution to cut the bolus/basal by %10-20ish or increase the protein intake depending on the workout that i'm gonna do. i always try to eat at least 2 hours before the workout. increasing raw carb for workout is really risky.
      what weirdly works out great for me is, i complete my meals for 12 units of insulin, if there are couple of units of insulin left, i fill it with bread most of the time. but i feel like this would make me gain weight in the future as i'm 33 years old atm and really active at the moment.
