    Fascinating info. I obtained what I believe is a bootleg version when I was a teenager. I still have it. I’m 62 now. A life long fan. This album always was special to me

    wonderful story - I hope to hear the result of your hard work some day 🙂As a danish RADIO/BROADCAST sound-engineer I visited Sterling-sound i NY around eastertime in 2001. Great day I´ll never forget - great people making it a great and inspiring visit for me. I´ve been a Sterling Mastering fanboy since I first found the name in the liner notes on records.
    My biggest love in the Billy Joel discography is clearly Pianoman - its such a great record. And actually I never have listened to Cold Spring Harbor in depth - and thats just because of exactly the pitch-problems. All theese years I have waited for a officiel release of a pitch corrected Cold Spring. So I hope your work will be released some day so I can get to hear Cold Spring Harbor as it was meant to be 🙂

    The amount of effort you've put into restoring Billy's intended vision for this record is amazing! I have done a few amateur restorations of audio from records or tapes myself, so I know the painstaking process it takes to remove the little analogue artifacts manually. That being said, thank you for your time and effort. If you could make this version of the album available on CZcams somewhere, I would love to give it a listen! Over the past two years I have been listening through Billy Joel's discography and have become quite fond of his music. I actually have yet to listen to his first album, but I would like to hear it the way he envisioned it to be. I am looking forward to hearing your remaster of the audio and would love to hear your rendition for my first time going through Cold Spring Harbor. Keep up the great work, and you certainly got a subscription from me!

    So I ran across this video after seeing another video talking about the speed issues on this album when it was released. I rarely would watch a 25 minute video all the way but this keep my attention. I love the stories you tell from beginning to end and showing your studio and Sterling. I was blown away that this is your only video! I think others as well as myself would love to see more content from you! I had never heard of Jamie Tate (not much of a country music fan...sorry) but after this video I want to come visit Rukkus Room!

    I made my own speed-corrected version of the 1998 CD. Apparently when Artie Ripp did the 1983 remix (which is on all the CDs), he tried to correct the speeds, but none of them are quite right, and they're all different. So I did my own corrections based on the evidence of the keys used on "Songs from the Attic" (which has two of the Cold Spring Harbor songs) and the knowledge that Billy tends to stick to keys that he finds easy to play in, like Am, C, D, F, and G. It would be interesting to hear your version to see if we agree on the keys and correct speeds. Also, I've never heard the original 1971 mix. I hope your version becomes available somehow. Maybe as bonus tracks on a future Cold Spring Harbor deluxe edition?

    It's worth noting that this original Cold Spring Harbor release was also manufactured on Cassette & 8-Track.. Artie Ripp struck a deal for cassettes back then through Ampex so the first 3 albums were done to tape on tape to Ampex.

    I managed to find a bootleg pressing of CSH in 1981, and I already knew about the speed problem. But the album was so good, I just went with it. I later found a European copy on Phillips records, but it had the same problem as the others. When the CBS pressing came out, I was happy with most of it, but my heart sunk when I heard the new drum tracks and other additionals / subtractions. But, there's good mixes out there now, thanks to folks like you and others in the CZcams community. There was a couple things that the '83 remix got right...but. Having a great program like Goldwave helps immensely too.
    Has anybody found the original 2 track master tape of the album...without the 1983 retouches?

    Killer work!
    I’m surprised you didn’t mention the train wreck that is the pitch adjustments on the 1983 version. She’s got a way is almost down to Gb! Then they seem to get closer to 440 as the album progresses, with Nocturne being about perfect.
    My favorite copy fidelity-wise that I own is an original Dutch pressing. If you only have US pressings, you might consider checking one of those out

    I just listened to Falling of the Rain on Apple Music Lossless and compared it to yours by ear and the amount of brightness and separation of the parts is crazy. The Apple recording sounds compressed, not necessarily in range, but in the mix. The parts seem like they are all at the same volume in the same space. In yours, there is more separation in the sound field. The instruments sound louder and his voice sounds a little more in the background. It's not dull-sounding like the other one.
    Am I hearing things?

  • @houbsta
    @houbsta Před 6 měsíci

    I love this album, but had never heard the original mixes until now. I only have the Spotify version and the CD version which is probably the 1983 remix/master. This captures the original versions, although some of the instrumentation is different and not as good in parts as the 1983 version, it's far closer to what I think Billy wanted. I wonder if he has heard this version.

    o u t s t a n d i n g. might be worth adding that record lathes cut straight across the disc. the reason records wear out so fast is the stylus is literally shaving off the vinyl as the tonearm is not playing back straight. inertia. i won't mention "sapphire" styli. they used to [esp on classical lps] use just maybe 1/3rd to a half of the record side for grooves. but the public could see all that "wasted" space. they gave the customers what they wanted! there were several turntables that played back like lathes, but for various reasons, didn't catch on. probably expensive. sorry for the screed. great video. regards. God bless.

    Elton John's 17-11-70 was recorded at A&R Studios, and Phil Ramone was the engineer.
    I'm guessing that's (at least periphery to) the connection to Billy, as Phil recorded/produced a lot of his stuff (edit: I see that 'The Stranger' was recorded and mixed there).
    It's a little sterile but I play 'Nylon Curtain' a couple times a year. I reckon that 'Innocent Man' has aged better of the two.
    So looking forward to listening to your 2023 re-master of this album!!! (edit: "You Can Make Me Free" is a kick-ass track, just amazing).

  • @chenlung1
    @chenlung1 Před 9 měsíci

    The effort is appreciated, but I’m wondering if you did some things incorrectly:
    1. I’m aware of the album’s original mastering issue, but be careful in general because some songs may have deliberately not been mastered at concert pitch, and I don’t think adjustments should be made on a song-by-song basis.
    2. It’s the speed that should be corrected, not the pitch (which maintains the tempo).

    • @bigmikerocks
      @bigmikerocks Před 8 měsíci

      They absolutely have to be made on a song by song basis.
      The songs are using pianos and organs which would be at 440. The songs were mixed at incorrect speeds.
      He’s doing adjustments using speed. If he says “pitch”, he’s just referring to what pitch the song ends up sounding in after the speed adjustment

    • @chenlung1
      @chenlung1 Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@bigmikerocks I’ve edited my original comment.
      1. I know the mastering on the album as a whole was originally wrong, but what I was trying to say is, sometimes songs are deliberately mastered at the wrong speed (‘Layla’; ‘Another One Bites the Dust’), so be careful not to correct something which was originally intended to be that way (again, not necessarily the case here, but be aware in general).
      2. It would be good to have this verified by the man himself.

    • @bigmikerocks
      @bigmikerocks Před 8 měsíci +1

      @@chenlung1 yah I guess you just have to assume that he wouldn’t have been messing with slight varispeed song to song. My guess is that he would have preferred it to all be straight up
