7:27 in Indian culture, places of knowledge like libraries or classrooms are considered sacred and are believed to be the house of Saraswati: the goddess of knowledge. So to show respect to her, footwear is left outside. Though in modern schools and institutes this is not followed anymore.
As for the last question, it's difficult to say with certainty. But given the absolutist emphasis of Buddhism on non-violence, even under attack, I doubt Buddhism would have survived. The destruction of Nalanda accelerated their decline because it was the nerve centre of Buddhism.
Hinduism was able to survive because while it demands pacifism, it doesn't shy away from taking up arms to defend the values and lives of innocents.
The fact that Jainism, Sikhism, Buddhism and Hinduism: all place an emphasis on pacifism and non-violence against a non-aggressor, these could have coexisted without any hurdles.
But Islam was something totally different. It demanded it's followers to eradicate everything what it deemed evil and crush any symbols of infidels.
Buddhism couldn't have survived that kind of unprovoked violence.

I don't clearly know if Buddhism would have a stronger foothold in India if the university was not destroyed. But one thing I know is Hinduism would still be the bigger religion.
At one time Buddhism was rapidly growing in India. It stopped when Jagadguru Shankaracharya came into the picture. He propogated a philosophy called the Advaida Vedanta and went all over India debating against every scholar of all philosophies. He defeated everyone with his knowledge and those who got defeated became his disciples. This reduced the popularity of Buddhism and brought back the popularity of Hinduism (mixture of many philosophies but mostly influence by Shankaracharya's Advaida Vedanta).
    P. S : Shankaracharya was just 32 when he died. He had accomplished so much that he is reverred till date.

The answer of your question at the end is a "sure yes" as per my guess. My reasoning is all of Indian religions that you hear about like buddhism, hinduism, sikhism, jainism are actually schools of thoughts and not religions. None of them originally beleive or worship in god but rather share the philosophy of uprising like a god( god meaning the enlightened beings of the past who played their role to the highest benchmarks possible for humankind) Temples were places of learning not worshipping. But as you might know, sadly it's much different than that at the moment because of bent & modified history and beliefs. What saddens me even more is that brits did more systemic destruction in 200 years than 1000years of islamic invasion. Greetings!

    - Yes this University was gem at the time for entire world.
    - Yes budhism would hv been even more flourishing than its now second to Hinduism in india & probably india would be in entire different place
    - Still budhism is flourishing here but not as it was supposed to as taken to china and korea or japan or other part of east.
    - it was disaster to lose such University especially the knowledge else the world would be a better place for sure.
So.. we need to live and do better with what we have and left.

Buddhism is also the path of salvation, which comes in Dharmic religions. In Hinduism, as you can see common feature the idols of any deities, will show Multiple arms, In 1 hand they will be holding Vedas (Knowledge), 1 hand is giving blessings and 1 hand always carries some weapon. This weapon signifies the spirit of resistance against evil or Adharma. Teachings of Buddhism are the same but nihilistic views and surrendering of that spirit of resistance led to the downfall of Buddhism throughout Gandhar (Afghanistan), Java (Indonesia), Malyasia, Pala kingdom (Bangladesh) and Tibet. All these places adopted Buddhism but cant survive Islamic invasion (except Tibet, which was captured easily by China) and lose their civilization.

The Symbol at the great Gate of the new Nalanda is the Endless Knot. Generally stands for Infinity, but here some more specific
    Meanings (i quote Wikipedia)
-The endless knot iconography symbolised Samsara i.e., the endless cycle of suffering of birth, death and rebirth within Tibetan Buddhism.
-The inter-twining of wisdom and compassion.
-Interplay and interaction of the opposing forces in the dualistic world of manifestation, leading to their union, and ultimately to harmony in the universe. (like Yin and Yang)
-The mutual dependence of religious doctrine and secular affairs.
-The union of wisdom and method.
-The inseparability of emptiness (shunyata) and dependent origination, the underlying reality of existence.
-The link between ancestors and omnipresence represented by the etymology of Tantra, Yoga and religion) (see Namkha.)
-The wisdom of the Buddha as neither are said to have a beginning or end.

Bakhtier Khalji was responsible for forcibly converting the entire Buddhist population of East India which is now Bangladesh. Similarly the current area of Pakistan and Afghanistan was also Buddhists and were forcible converted due to the non-violence philosophy of Buddhism in those times. Chandargupta Maura created the empire, his son expanded it but his Grand Son Ashoka converted to Buddhism and thus caused the decline of the empire even as Ashoka was responsible for taking Buddhism all over South-East Asia (Myanmar, Cambodia, Vietnam, Malaysia, Indonesia), Lanka, Japan, Korea, China and other places. So! Even as Nalanda was a very good thing but not burning it down would not have done anything to the eventual fate of Buddhists in India. World and India lost lots of accumulated knowledge in its various universities due to these invasions. Buddhists in Myanmar, Vietnam, Cambodia, Japan and places survived as they evolved and understood that they must militarize to protect themselves.

Answer to your question (according to me) is "No"
Buddhism is an offshoot of sanatana, almost 80% sanatani people converted to that school of thought, then came the period of Adi Sankara also known as "Adi Shankaracharya" a scholar who had debates with buddhist scholars which they lost in the early 9th century, and people came back home to their roots. So the answer to your question is "No".

( Bhu = means earth, gol = means sphere or round depending on the context ) .. why would our ancestors refer this name “ earth is round or sphere “ to refer this subject Geography if they didn’t know earth is spherical..

It is said that he bought some experts with him and when those experts examined the contents of the library they failed to even comprehend most of the material because of how advance it was and whatever little they could decode was like rocket science to them and after that Khilji compared it to witchcraft and declared practices and study material as ungodly and blasphemous and destroyed everything.
