  • Here's this week's elevator video! Finally, here is a retake of one of my favorite elevators, and also one that's not in Wheaton. We were in Rockford visiting family, and we came downtown so I could record a few elevators. It's been almost 3 years since I've filmed this one, so it's time for another retake. 2013 take: www.youtube.co....
Before I get into my personal story of this elevator, let's take a closer look at it. In many ways, it's your standard 6-story Dover high hydraulic elevator. It's got a beautiful-sounding dry powered motor. It is glass, which always makes the ride ten times more fun, and, based on the relay controls, I would have to guess an installation year of 1990 or 91. For a parking garage, it actually does have a rather large capacity of 3500 LBS. Very large elevator. In some ways, it's very unique. As I mentioned, it's relay-controlled. This is shown by how the numbers on the indicator disappear before changing, the lack of the Dover chime trick, and the fact the lanterns ring when the car begins leveling with the floor, not after the doors have opened. The controller also pulses the down chimes very strangely. The second big difference with this elevator is the lack of the Dover buzz or bird chirp. This elevator has a rare Dover floor passing chime that sounds closer to an Otis beep, but it isn't. I've only heard this beep on one other Dover elevator on CZcams. Other than the phone box door being black, not too much more to say about it.
It does have a few problems, one of them being a problem that it's had since at least 2011. Around the 4th or 5th floor, there is a knock sound, as if the car is hitting something in the shaft, which it probably is. That needs to be checked out, as it could become a safety issue. The lantern on the 4th floor could use a little straightening up, and a few bulbs on the floor indicators need replacement. Other than that, though, my favorite Dover is doing pretty good!
This elevator is special to me because I used to ride it as kid, back around 2005-2006. During that time, my aunt and uncle owned The King's Table Cafe in what is now the Roly Poly across the street in Stewart Square. When visiting, I'd sit at the bar stools at the window and watch this elevator go up and down as I was eating the food my uncle prepared me. If I was lucky enough, a family member would walk me across the "street" to ride it a few times. At that time, there was never a street separating the two buildings. It used to be a walkway/courtyard with trees and benches. Very sad they took all that out and turned it into a street. This elevator also brought me and a former elevator photographer, Peter, together and now we are pretty good friends. I'm glad this elevator has remained in all these years. Hopefully it won't see a modernization for a long time.
This is, like, my own version of the Market Parking Garage dieselducy has been filming since he first started, even though these two garages are nothing alike.

This elevator is more from the 80s. The Dover buzz is on 90-91 elevators, and this elevator has the bird chirp. Also the extremely delayed time on the upper floor

I really love love Dover impulse

  • @JordanLoweElevaToursCanada

I've never seen a Dover impulse elevator with a floor indicator time like that before. Typically when I see a Dover impulse elevator it has been buzz for a floor passing time.

+Jordan Lowe ElevaTours Canada Yep, that's how the relay controllers do it. Each number turns off after the elevator passes that floor, and then the next indicator comes on. This is especially common on Impulse traction elevators. Many of the relay controlled ones have a chirp rather than a buzz, but this is particular one is a very uncommon chirp sound.

The down chime is definitely odd on this one, but it's kinda cool, gives it some uniqueness

+S600Tim Very true. It is a unique elevator in very many ways. It's definitely the fact this one has a weird relay controller on it.

Yeah, it's something I like to call the Dover Chirp, and it's actually pretty rare on Dover Impulse-based elevators.
