  • Here we have the last of the three uploads from Rockford. Today we take a ride on these fun and very unique Dover/ThyssenKrupp bottom-drive traction elevators. Unlike the original take from 2013, we get to ride both elevators this time.
    2013 take: • Custom Dover/TK Impuls...
This is going to be a long technical explanation. To start off, the elevator on the left is an original Dover, while the one on the right is a newer ThyssenKrupp. The left looks to have been installed sometime in the late 80's to early 90's. The right was installed sometime between 2001 and 2005. Despite the age differences, both elevators have the same newer technology and were both put on a new controller.
The left elevator is obviously a Dover. The older Impulse call buttons near it are original. On the inside, there's only been a few upgrades done by TK. Two of the floor bezels on the car panel were replaced with TK Impulse. You can see the difference between the 6 and 7 and the rest of the number bezels. Looks like the bezel that reads "Fire Operation" was also added on during the upgrade. Secondly, this elevator, at one time, had an internal car lantern which was removed. As you can see, a piece of metal has been slapped over the hole where that was. This elevator has a beeper as a floor passing chime. Not sure if that's original Dover or if the sounder was replaced. Finally, the indicator was most likely upgraded to LED, but I could be wrong. The right elevator is a ThyssenKrupp, to my knowledge. You can see the call stations near it are the newer style Impulse call stations where the up and down arrows are next to the buttons, not above or below them. The car panel inside is a full ThyssenKrupp panel. No evidence of an internal car lantern. This one also lacks a floor passing chime.
In comparison, both elevators have/were updated with newer technology. Both have identical custom lantern/indicators on every floor. All the indicators are true LEDs, which I like a lot. What basically happened here, in my opinion, is that an extra elevator needed to be installed after the Dover was in service for maybe 10 years. The ThyssenKrupp was installed on the right, and the Dover had its lantern removed and its technology upgraded and then it was put on the new controller along with the new elevator. Very interesting. These elevators run pretty good. The TK definitely runs a lot better than the Dover. The Dover is slower and shakes going up. You can see that in the video and hear the squeaking. The car panel on the TK is a little weird. It's got a phone box and then an extra box right below the indicator which is completely empty. The Dover has the extra box as well, but it needs a barrel key to be opened. I assume this is because the inspection, independent service, and fan/light switches may be in there. The controller operation is very different from your typical Dover/TK controller. You can hear this, especially, by how the down chimes are pulsed.
Original credit goes to Peter for showing me these elevators. If you're in Winnebago County, Illinois, I highly recommend dropping by these elevators!

Not true. This is only if it uses the newest impulse fixtures and installed in 1999-2001

Definitely not everyday you see a phone box mounted above the buttons in a Dover or TK. Interesting how they added the second elevator after the original construction of the garage. I wonder if the shaft space was already there when the garage was built, and they just added the second elevator. If so, wonder if it was a planned expansion by the people who built the garage (similar to when they put extra floor buttons in the elevator in a garage or building).
