Die Power Metal-Gruppe um Frontmann Chris Boltendahl gehört seit 1980 zur Spitze des „Teutonen-Metals“. Die Band hat in ihrer langen Geschichte regelmäßige und erfolgreiche Tourneen, zahlreiche Besetzungswechsel, Trennungen und Comebacks erlebt.
Nach dem Debütalbum „Heavy Metal Breakdown“ von 1984 spielten die Gladbecker 1985 und 1986 direkt drei Nachfolgealben ein und gingen mit Helloween und Celtic Frost auf Tour. 1987 folgte die erste Trennung der Band. 1991 kam man wieder zusammen und machte direkt weiter mit regelmäßigen Alben und Tourneen, u.a. mit Manowar.
1996 begann die Ära der Konzeptalben von Grave Digger. So bilden zum Beispiel „Tunes Of War“, “Knights Of The Cross“ und „Excalibur“ eine Mittelalter-Trilogie, „The Grave Digger“ ist von Edgar Allan Poe inspiriert, „Rheingold“ von Richard Wagner. Dazwischen feierten Grave Digger im Jahr 2000 ihr zwanzigjähriges Bestehen in der Zeche Dortmund.
Es folgten zahlreiche weitere erfolgreiche Konzeptalben und Tourneen, und 2010 feierte die Band beim Wacken Open Air ihren 30-jährigen Geburtstag mit vielen illustren Metal-Gästen. 2014 nahm die Band mit „Return Of The Reaper“ erstmals wieder ein konzeptfreies Album auf. Seit der Trennung von ihrem langjährigen Schlagzeuger Stefan Arnold, für den Keyboarder Marcus Kniep an die Schießbude wechselte, treten Grave Digger als Quartett auf.

Funny how Grave Digger, A German heavy metal band can get me so much more invested in my own Scottish history that I went to Culloden a few days ago
This is a band that I have in my heart, as I have been listening to it since I was 17 years old with the album Tunes of War, which in my opinion is my favorite. I'm glad the band is still active, of course they are older, Chris Boltendahl for example is already a 60 year old gentleman, and within his limitations he still continues to sing in the band within what he can do. And honestly? Faced with several bands with the same age as Grave Digger, there are a lot of bands doing loud shit, and they should shut down their activities, thankfully that Grave Digger is not the case. I hope you come to Brazil one more time.

In the UK Grave Digger have never been given any support from the media or booking agents and festivals, such a shame as they clearly love our British history, it seems their main inspiration. I have followed them since I discovered them in the 80's and finally saw them in 2010 and hope to once again! maybe Wacken again in 2024 (40th anniversray of HM Breakdown) - and Axel Ritt I love your playing in Grave Digger, ignore the haters \m/

Der Axel Ritt ist furchtbar. Manni Schmidt war super melodisch und sympathisch. Hab ich 2005 persönlich kennengelernt. Uwe Lulis hatte die brutalsten geilsten Riffs.

Ich finde es nur schade das Grave Digger nicht mehr aus den 80ern spielt. Klar Heavy Metal Breakdown läuft immer, aber die Klassiker haben komplett vergessen.

Grave Digger sind für mich der Inbegriff von 08/15 Metal. Dieser Gig ist wieder mal ein Paradebeispiel ihrer 08/15igkeit.
Einerseits weiß ich genau, was du meinst. Auf der anderen Seite sehe ich theoretisch zumindest genügend ausreichend geile Songs für ne vernünftige Festivalsetlist... Theoretisch. Die praktische Umsetzung in diesem Video finde ich aber dann auch wieder eher so lala...
Cool, dass sie die Show so auch auf die kleinere RH-Bühne gebracht haben. Gute Idee! Allerdings kaum zu glauben, dass der großartige Accept-Mix und die Abmischung von Grave Digger & Sodom vom gleichen Event sind. Viel zu dünn, mono und trocken. Hoffe vor Ort klang das deutlich breiter.

Probably to cut down costs. You can safe some money by only having one guitarist

@@uhtredragnarsson8961 Yeah, I know what you mean. The sound isn't as full (don't know whether it's called like that in English too), if you are basically missing your rhythm guitarist. But Rock Hard seems to have problems with finding the right mix for their acts. Exodus sounded very flat, too.

Das peinlichste überhaupt ist einfach der falsch herum aufgenähte Judas Priest Aufnäher und dieser Kasperle als Backing Vocalist.
Geht es nur mir so, oder kann der Sänger halt wirklich nicht singen ? Das ist weder melodisch noch schön. Warum ist die Band nochmal so bekannt ?
nein da bist du nicht allein. Habe die Band im Wacken livestream gesehen und fands unfassbar schlecht. Dann gesucht ob es immer so klingt. Und hier ists noch schlimmer :-D
Wenns euch nicht passt , dann sucht euch doch ne andere Band.
Es gibt mittlerweile hunderte ....wenn nicht sogar tausende Bands im Metal Bereich.
Die sind wohl nicht umsonst über 40 Jahre da.
Und hier gehören sie auch hin.
Und zwar zur Speerspitze des Deutschen Metal.
Wenn ihr schönes Gesinge hören möchtet, dann solltet ihr vielleicht eine andere Musik Art wie Schlager oder Volksmusik wählen.
Ich fand die immer geil....und daran wird sich auch nichts mehr ändern. 🤘
