  • WITNESSES TO A SECRET WAR tells the stories of three generations of Hmong refugees as they struggle with their personal and political legacies. The Xiong family, who fought on America's side of the "secret" war in Laos, tries to claim their own piece of the American dream while Hmong American Ka Ying Yang tries to understand her own similar family history.

Please get your grandpa to tell his story, get it on video. The story of the Hmong is not widely known and the wars in Laos remain disputed history. If the Hmong don't document themselves they will be at the mercy of American "academics" who have repeatedly disgraced themselves by constructing false histories full of lies of omission.

ntxawg yaj Its unfortunate though as our generation are becoming Americanized and not enough of us are helping our own people. Majority of hmong people in Laos are finding ways to con the hmong Americans and even the Hmong Americans here are going back for all the wrong reasons. Exploiting young girls and what not and the Hmong Lao happily exploiting themselves along with it. I understand there's always going to be a change in modern society though. I just wish we all can do something bigger that will make a positive change to better our people as a whole.

I never heard any Hmong leader or Vang Pao saying we Lao and Hmong were allies. I believed we Lao-American are on our own. And we only choose to gain our future else where and not with you Hmong as we have learned how much of a mistake would could get into with the Hmong-American. We are happy for our ppl future with lies among our own for the better benefit.

What I'm trying to say is as a culture and a small group of people we have flourish within the U.S and Frances, as of today we are still strong like our previous counterparts in Laos or maybe more stronger, we have senators, huge gathering events and Charter school for Hmong culture. As Hmong we don't really have a country but our mark within the community our stronger then ever. Just FYI we our looking more forward to our Miao brother in China then that of Laos

Of course we respect those Hmong in Laos for the fact that they well represent the unity of the Laotian ppl. Unlike those Hmong-American and the Vang Pao fraction who disregard themselves to service the Laotian as a whole. They clearly forgotten where they came from. Today Hmong in the state only speak Hmong, but not Lao. How could we Lao ppl accept your ppl if you entitle to speak your own language that your own ppl don't rarely have a history among our country and ppl?

No surprise to me! everybody have stereotype toward each other and seem stranger to each other anyway. Honestly, I don't care and I never regret that my family followed VP to USA. And Last we proud to call ourselves Hmong America.

  • @seize7days

You're right that we were serving the American master--uncle Sam. VP said it best--that a few of us can stand against millions of them, that is the sweetest feeling. We were the pain in commie Viet and Lao ass. The King asked VP to fight so he fought. Hmong were in Laos so it was our war too.
We served Uncle Sam once, now we are one with him. No longer slaves but becoming the master. No longer sheeps but wolves. Yes, Hmong Americans are becoming the wolf now.

True. During the French colonization of Indochina, the country of Laos was seized, however the Hmong people couldn't be tamed. A leader bythename of Paj Cai Vue led the Hmong the revolt and without gunsand arms still held o ftheFrench. After the mess the Hmongs were actually granted land but sadly without a foundation of Government greed eventually led us to lose the land. Even through thatwe still held our own.To thisday I believe we may not be where we want to be but we are where we should be.
