  • Mark Kislingbury's successful new court reporting world record of writing 370wpm for one minute and transcribing with 95.4% accuracy, which took place on Friday, March 25, 2022, in Houston, Texas, at the Steno in the City "Fearless Stenographers 2022" conference. With this effort Mark broke his own 2004 world record of 360wpm. Mark hopes this effort will inspire court reporters and students alike to never give up on their speed and accuracy goals!

    so the dictation was 370 wpm but his accuracy was 95.4%, so shouldn't his actual speed be calculated to be around 353 wpm?

    • @magicmulder
      @magicmulder Před 10 měsíci +93

      They could calculate that way, but here the rule is "effective speed with at least 95% accuracy" so you don't get penalized for being closer to 95% than to 100%.

      In a way there should be no errors, it's meant for court reporting so does it really matter how fast you go if you can't rely on the integrity of what's written? 150wpm with no mistakes is useful, 300wpm but you may have a few totally nonsensical sentences is actually useless.
      I only watched for a few seconds and saw so many massive mistakes.

      @AToMexe Před 5 měsíci +4

      @@Kiowan918 I'm thinking the same. If for every 100 words, 5 of them have mistakes, then the case could look really different.

      @@Kiowan918Not all stenography is meant for court reporting, it's just the most well associated application. Since this is a speed showcase, not actual court stenography, there's no reason why zero errors should be tolerated.

    I could not even follow the source half the time, so that's already a massive feat to even understand spoken text at this speed. I think I could speed read at 370 wpm but listening, let alone typing, that's awesome.

    Just wondering, what exactly is the second part of the video after you start the stopwatch?
    First, you listen to the audio and type it out. Then, you time yourself correcting the transcription. Finally, you check the end accuracy?

    • @Thatsspirit
      @Thatsspirit Před 2 lety +17

      That's exactly what it is. Normal speed tests for court reporters (RPR and RMR) have the testing portion where we write what's said, and then we get the opportunity to go back and edit our transcripts to correct any mistakes that we made, such as dragging a finger or transposing words. The test passing accuracy is 95% for these tests, which he achieved.

      Cool little gadgets, a bit expensive though. You can learn the theory on your own and there are cheaper options out there based on NKRO enabled keyboards if you want to learn it as a hobby using a free software like Plover. Still requires 6 to 24 months to get good at it, depending on how much effort you put into it.

      Well, you can hear why it happened. The second a in airbags was the reason.
      Still though, it's impressive. Google Docs has a speech to text function and it's just as, if not more accurate than CZcams's auto captions. But since the video is being stored somewhere and the captions are usually unavailable right after the video uploads, there's time for more accurate speech to text recognition.

      I'm guessing it's not going away as fast as people think. This is pretty clear audio, despite being sped up a lot, and people don't have thick accents, on most videos I watch there are some really ridiculous errors in the automated captions. Whenever I hear something I can't quite understand (English is not my native language) the caption is completely useless and I have to go back and listen again to try to understand.
