Navy vet here: Condition "Zebra" is the most watertight setup for the ship, normally set during battle stations. It involves closing every watertight door and hatch on the ship, so if one compartment gets flooded it is contained in a smaller area.

A note to the above; one of the biggest differences between a warship and a civilian ship, the degree of compartmentalization. If the Titanic had been compartmentalized like a warship it might very well have survived the collision with the iceberg. If the hatches had been sealed before the collision it might have even gotten as good as likely to have survived.

It actually makes sense that Magneto couldn't stop the bullet that killed his mom, since the bullets at that time were mostly made of lead, which is non-magnetic. By the 60s... lead was still a major component, but some other alloys were getting mixed in as well, which explains Magneto being able to affect them, though not control them.

I remember a lot of criticism for how Darwin was handled, partly by cutting to his face when Cross mentioned being enslaved (which was really on-the-nose and exploitative), but mostly because Darwin is one of the most resilient and powerful characters in the comics, and he got killed so easily and quickly in this movie.

Also Hank McCoy is called Beast

In this movie for now on Moira lost her accent. Such a shame direction for the actress but maybe with her working for CIA here makes more sense I don't know.
And also in the comics Moira is constantly called human but she is actually a very peculiar mutant.
She can die and born again in a different mother and keep her past knowledge since birth everytime.
Making her crazy smart to develop that damn "cure" even tho being very young and still humans and mutants try to take her down.
Maybe that would be the answer for her non existent accent by being born various times by different parents.
Also she did played both sides of the game working with Charles and many times with Magneto and Apocalypse too. Eventually she stayed in humans side but helping Charles in moments of huge crisis. It's a hell of a mess if you're trying to adapt the lore of the X-Men comics haha

@@bankbarcomo806 yes she was. Even with the accent that I was talking about. Moira originally was about to have a more important role in the movies but unfortunately they stopped in that trilogy before moving on years later with her character. You can see they tried to do a continuation with Sir Patrick Stewart recruiting mutants in the past in the Origins: Wolverine so technically they stopped that timeline there, not in The Last Stand. After that everything was "kind of" rebooted in a smart way but you know... If you watched Days of The Future Past there is a LOT of inconsistency like the recast of Bolivar Trask.
The Fox's X-Men are a huge pile of messiness in the matter of timeline but now that Disney owns Marvel hopefully this will change.
We need more Moira in the movies this time hehe she is not very well adapted with justice in these movies in my opinion and have a major importance in the comics for awhile. The whole plot about her and Pyro is shocking and very disturbing.

Great casting here, to be sure. But Charles' and Erik's complex and interesting character arcs are really the work of one Chris Claremont. He wrote many of the X-Men comics for a decade and a half, and is responsible for many of their greatest characters and stories. He took the series from being a struggling book that had already been cancelled once, to one of Marvel's flagship and most popular comics, and one of the earliest Marvel teams to have their own movie. I don't want to take away from the various X-Men movies' screenplays, but they had excellent source material with which to work.

I really like how Charles lost his ability to walk in this film connecting him closer to Magneto. In the Mainline comics Lucifer (An alien who came to Earth as the vanguard of an alien invasion) dropped a massive stone block on Charles, crippling his legs in retaliation after a young Xavier defeated him. In the Ultimate Universe Magneto paralyzed Xavier with a metal spear through the back after Charles realised that Magneto was building a Mutant Army. So Charles and his sympathizers tried to escape and in the end Charles got paralyzed. Magneto like alot of characters in the Ultimate Universe was pretty unlikeable and he's one of the few renditions of the character that is just an awful person, no grey area just straight up a villain. In the end Magneto ultimately snapped Charles neck in one of the worse comic book storylines ever Ultimatum. So thankfully this film never went in that direction and showcased Magento as a more anti hero who became a villain that still has morals in regards to human life.

In the comics, millions of years ago, the Celestials experimented with beings throughout the galaxies and infused them with powers.
(Remember the story about the Infinity Stones and Celestials that the Collector was explaining to the Guardians in the first movie?)
The Kree (Blue people from Guardians and Captain Marvel) for example, were only lower life forms when the Celestials took their planet and upgraded them.
The Kree became an advanced people and built an empire, eventually started experimenting on other life forms too, but for the benefit of using them to increase the formidable power of the Kree empire.
When the Celestials came to earth to experiment on humans, they first created mutated beings called The Deviants, which looked more monster like, and were to weed out the competing Apex predators that could endanger the human race that they were experimenting on.
Those Deviants got out of hand and became the newer problem.
BTW..Thanos is the creation of 2 Celestials but somehow ended up becoming a Deviant. ( purple looking monster)
The other experimented humans pretty much stayed human like and had powers..they were called Eternals.
Fast forward millions of years later and descendants from those beings who have the dormit "X gene" can have that gene awakened by exposure to radiation..in Bruce's and Steve Rogers's case that would be Gamma Ray.
I think that Bruce and his cousin share a Deviant X gene because they turn into green monsters. Also, I think maybe his female cousin (She Hulk) maybe have a spliced one with part Eternal blood.
So, Shaw's plan to let the world get bombed with nukes is do to the fact that he knows it will awaken the dormit X Gene in those who have it.
There are some people who are just X gene carriers and pass it on to their kids, without being enhanced themselves. Exposure to space radiation, will cause them to get a high level of cancer.
My theory is that's what happened to Quill's mom.
Ego was a Celestial who learned how to make a human body.
He went out trying to procreate with beings to find some with the descendant X gene. I think he put radiation into her body because he needed Quill's unborn body to absorb it and possibly manifest the gene he needed to help him carry out his mission from Guardians.. 2.
In present times these super powered beings are called Mutants.
I didn't deep dive into all the backstory, because I know comics get alternate stories told by different comic book writers, over time.
The MCU writers take most of their story arcs from the written material, but also to use as a blueprint to make their own twists on the lores of the characters and their arcs.
The Xmen movies did a poor job at continuity, but they gave amusing adaptations of the comics they used as resources.

From this point on, the X-Men universe isn’t suuuuper concerned with continuity. Like, it was probably never in the plan for Charles and Raven to grow up together which is why they were only ever enemies in the original movies. In X1 Charles says he met Eric when he was 17 and that Eric helped him build Cerebro. So the continuity and timelines get REALLY wonky starting with this movie

Fun fact from Behind the Scenes: This movie introduced Nicholas Hoult (Hank McCoy/Beast) and Jennifer Lawrence to each other, and the onscreen chemistry led to an off screen romance for five years. Basically because they were both so busy, it took its toll on the relationship and they broke up. Nicholas is filming a new comic book movie now....he's joined the DC Universe under James Gunn (Guardians of the Galaxy) in the next Superman film that will star David Corenswet (Superman), Rachel Brosnahan (Lois Lane), Nathan Fillion (Green Lantern/Guy Gardner). and Milly Alcock (from HBO's House of the Dragon as Supergirl)...Nicholas will be the bad guy...the archnemesis of Superman, Lex Luthor.
Where the OG X-Men movies gave us the Friendship Goals teaming of Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen as BFFs, the First Class cast gave us James MacAvoy and Michael Fassbender not only kinda being the same thing as off screen BFFs, but leading to all sorts of...fan art of romantic couplings of Charles and Erik (even though both James and Michael are married men). They both laugh at the fan art and slash fiction that's been created.
Now that you've seen your first Matthew Vaughn film, some others to put on the list:
    - The Kingsmen: The Secret Service (1) with Colin Firth, Taron Egerton, Mark Strong, Michael Caine, and Samuel L. Jackson. This series are amazing spy action movies.
    - The Kingsmen: The Golden Circle (2) with Colin, Taron, and Mark, plus Julianne Moore, Channing Tatum, Pedro Pascal, Jeff Bridges, Halle Berry, and Sir Elton John.
    - The King's Man (3) - A prequel with Ralph Fiennes
    - Stardust with Claire Danes, Charlie Cox, Robert DeNiro, and Michelle Pfeiffer, based on the fantasy novel by Neil Gaiman.
    - Kick-Ass with Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Chloe Grace Moretz, and Nicholas Cage. A twist on superheroes if they really existed.
    - Layer Cake with Daniel Craig, Tom Hardy, Michael Gambon, and Sienna Miller. This one is like the films he produced that were directed by Guy Ritchie: Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch.)

When they say “we need our army” , it kind of makes sense for there to be very limited mutants and how they can control their powers. This time period is the beginning of basically the whole franchise - so you can assume that mutants have only recently started popping up in modern society again. That along with the fact that it’s still extremely difficult to try and train your powers when 1) you think you’re the only person who has gifts and no one else can help you understand your own and 2) anything you do that other humans don’t understand gets you usually either locked up or experimented on. It’s also thematically symbolic to show that the X-Men were in fact started from basically nothing.

You could say that all genetic traits were mutations in their origin so when Charles pointed out Moira's hair colour and mentioned that it was due to the MCR1 gene he was just flexing his knowledge of genetics. The MCR1 gene itself was a mutation at some point, he wasn't saying that she had a mutated version of the MCR1 gene just that she had that particular gene/mutation. For the sake of the movie and to explain mutants the writing and dialogue overuse the word mutation but in reality we would just say gene or genetic trait.

For your question about the hair gene coloring effect of MC1R, essentially MC1R (incorrectly called MCR1 in the movie) is responsible for variation of pigmentation of red-yellow hues. AkA-auburn and brown hair colors. Its a mutation of genes that effect how much MC1R ramps up or powers down production of those red-yellow pigments. Since we see it all the time, it’s hard to refer to it as a mutation but technically speaking, white skin could also be considered (assuming because I didn’t look this up) a mutation since humanity started in Africa.

Since her character is really only in this movie, I'll spoil the rest for you: She is obscenely rich, like Tony Stark levels of rich, in the comics. She eventually becomes an anti-hero, and then, following a few tragic events, becomes a full blown member of the X-Men, then a teacher, and eventually the headmistress of the Xavier school. Each of the prequel films covers one decade per film. This film covers the cuban missile crisis era so 1960's for this film. Next would be the 70's then 80's.
Kevin Bacon plays mutant Sebastian Shaw leader of the Hellfire club. His powers are that he can absorb all kinetic energy and then redirect that energy at any target he wants. This includes energy blasts, bullets, grenades, missiles and punches to him directly.
Emma Frost, The Hellfire Club's White Queen is a telepath and she can make her flesh as hard as diamond but still have mobility. This gives her some psychic resistance as well.
Emma's transformation is similar to Colossus who can turn his flesh into organic steel at will. As long as he remains conscious. 😮
In the comics radiation exposure is a common trope for getting super powers. Peter Parker gets bitten by a radioactive spider and becomes Spider-Man. Bruce Banner gets exposed to gamma radiation and becomes the Hulk.
Mutants on the other hand are born with the potential for mutant powers which typically manifest either at puberty or under extreme stress like Eric. But the powers are inherent not due to outside forces.
Stan Lee created mutants as an origin due to the difficulty of coming up with power origins. Brainstorming names are easy, designing costumes is easy for artists. Coming up with powers is also easy. But explaining how they got those abilities became harder and harder. So mutants...born with powers so no origin necessary. It all came down to convenience.

Edit 1: 3:00 hi, German here. Let's say, Kevin Bacon did an admirable job of learning enough German to get it grammatically correct. He even got the infamous "ch" diphthong almost correct.
But let's say, if he had tried to impersonate a German as a foreign spy, his gig would have been up at around the third word. I can't overemphasize how impressed I am at his attempt, and it's not terrible but very definitely very noticeable.
If you've seen "Inglorious Bastards" it would definitely NOT have been blowing his cover by holding up the wrong fingers for 3 but the very noticeable accent.

Hi, one of the things that I've not seen mentioned anywhere is how much of the way Eric is portrayed, particularly when he is solo, is based on the Sean Connery James Bond of that era. From the twangy guitars of his theme to his outfits, particularly in the scene with the banker.
When he turns and shoots the guy in South America it is reminiscent of the famous Bond gun barrel opening and the jacket he wears in Russia is similar to that worn by Pierce Brosnan in the opening scene of Tomorrow Never Dies.

@@Tushar_995yeah, in the comics Scott is older I think. But in this franchise series they made him younger than Alex to make sense of him being introduced to the X-Men, but for me doesn't make sense because Scott was one of the first class members too according to comics. At least is what I read recently. Even in other medias or the animated series they constantly mention that Scott and Jean were one of the first students in Xavier's school.

Hey Jax, since you asked: As a german i can say his german is actually very good! However it is super clear to a german that he isnt german due to his accent. Thats actually something that bothers me in movies, like why not get a german american actor with both mother tongues? :D It always throws me off a bit hahaha but its ok ig :)

"Does Charles get a romance?" In the comics, there are a number of romances for Charles. Notable is one with an Israeli diplomat/mutant. Their union produces a son, David Haller (Legion). David is a psychic mutant like Charles who is so powerful, he can create entirely new realities. He is the subject of the FX series "Legion". Its a little graphic and gory so I'm not sure its your cup of tea, but before you go wishing that Charles finds a girlfriend, you should research David Haller to see what a little Professor X love produces.

25:10 So to explain to you how far can Darwin's powers go, in the comics he was once touched by the goddess of death and to survive his mutation made HIM a god of death that overpowers her. His mutation is supposed to he THAT powerful. What makes him fun is that he cannot control in what he is going to adapt to, so it's not like he can transform into a god by command, but he is literally UNKILLABLE.

There's a 90's cartoon X-Men. And right now there is an X-Men '97. Looks like only 10 episodes. Also there was a TV show that lasted I believe only 2 or 3 seasons called The Gifted. It deals with X-Men as well.

Heres the story on how Stan Lee created the X-men if your interested.
(note: this is how Stan lee created the original comic story of the x men which is very different from the movies).
This is how it started - in 1963 Stan lee has already created a lot of comic superheroes and their stories some of these are spiderman, hulk, captain america, fantastic four, iron man and many more but then of course he wanted to introduce another group of heroes he came up with to comic book lovers. a team of five heroes which has Cyclops who shots laser beam out of his eyes, Marvel girl (Jean Grey) who can move things with her mind, Iceman who has ice powers, beast who has Superhuman strength, stamina, and reflexes, and then there is Angel how can fly due to having giant wings on his back these are the original X-men Stan lee created (Cyclops, Jean Grey, Iceman, Beast and Angel) and they are lead by a man who has telepathic abilities named Charles Xavier.
Stan has one big problem though when it comes to this creation of his, and that is he cant come up with a origin story for them. just like how he created his previous creations like spiderman, hulk, iron man etc, he needs to come up with a story on how/where these characters got their superpowers. it took a very long while of thinking and thinking but he couldnt just come up with a story and because of this he had this idea which he thought was silly and thats what if these characters didnt got there powers from somewhere, what if these characters already have power from the beginning like they were born that way, he thought it might not work and that readers would hate it.
but this also lead him to the fact that there are actually Mutations in real life, like there are people born with extra fingers (Polydactyly) or people who have different colored eyes (heterochromia), and many more. he thought this is a great idea because it would be a good kind of plot for the story, having character who are hated and judge by the society because they are born different. so he then shared it to his co-workers and publisher and they ended up loving it.
original this superhero team he created are known as "The Mutants" which his co-workers and publisher didnt really like, they told Stan he needs to change it, because many of comicbook readers in the 60s are children and that it's either they don't know what a Mutant is or that Mutants are scary monsters, so Stan need to rename the team something thats sounds cool and dramatic. then he remember the leader of the team's name is Charles Xavier which made him take the first letter of his surname and then put it next to the word "Men" , which he thought could work because the word "X-Men" also kinda states that they are "Not Human".
and that is how X-Men was created which is now one of the most successful comics in history. as the years go by they then added new characters such as wolverine, storm, nightcrawler , and many more.

That was so fun to read! I love that the concept of mutants were created out of a desire not to have to come up with individual backstories for all of the characters.

To your questions: Would radiation make mutants stronger? No, not necessarily. But the theory is that more mutants started showing up after nuclear testing started, so then a full war would sprout a LOT of mutants, and then they could rule. Did fans of the comics like this? Yes and no. It's a good movie, I like how closely it ties to the themes, but I'm dissapointed that they didn't keep the original class as Scott, Jean, Bobby (Iceman), Hank, and Warren (Angel). I know we saw them in the first movies, but they should be Xavier's first students. Do they have romances? In one of the universes (the Ultimates) Charles and Moira got together. In the main universe, they're portrayed as just colleagues. Thanks for the fun video as always!

Yeah, thats like the same problem i always had with the Avengers in the MCU, since i never have read X-Man comics, but a lot Avengers when they first came out here in Germany. And for me the first Avenger was always Hank Pym, and he was also the one who built Ultron.
So i don't have the problems with the X-Men movies so much, only with the whole Phonix Saga that i new at least from the animated show, but i just hate how the treated Hank Pym, and also of course Janet, in the MCU.

23:50 In the original X-Men comics, mutants were called "The Children of the Atom." While there had been mutants throughout history, they were very very rare until mankind started doing nuclear tests. It was the bombs going off in Russia and the USA during the tests, as well as the weapons used in Japan, that caused mutation to explode (no pun intended) around the world as the radiation caused changes in the X-gene of mankind, allowing for mutants to be born of non-mutant parents.
