Singer 15 91 Bobbin Winder Adjustment

- It seems there is a rash of problematic bobbin winders on Singer 15-91 type sewing machines. As I try to be as responsive as possible to our VSM family, here's an easy way to adjust your bobbin winder. Please note that this same method works on the 201-2 as well.
No need to chapter this video as it's only 4 minutes long.

Thank you so much! I've been struggling with my bobbin winder for at least 10yrs. My work-around was to press down on the latch until there was enough thread on the bobbin that the tire engaged--didn't know it was the tire--I'm just a 76 yr old grandmother. About 10 days ago this stopped working. Found out how to adjust in my manual. Still no good. Saw that the tire was in poor shape. New tire(s) came today. No way I could replace the tire as you did--couldn't squeeze it beside the balance wheel. Took off the balance wheel and still could not get the tire on the hub. After some tiring struggling, I thought to put the tire in hot water for about 10 minutes. Then spent a good 30 minutes putting the balance wheel back together--could not get that washer to stay in position so I could finish the assembly--a bit of Scotch tape worked. Still didn't work so did the adjustment. Pressing down with "moderate" pressure didn't work I had to press down as hard as I could--did I mention I'm older than dirt & weak. An hour & a half later everything works! Now I can do some sewing. BTW I bought a side winder just in case!
I must confess... When I have the machine out of a cabinet or base, I tip the motor end of the machine up to help keep the washer in place!
Glad to hear it's not just me! Of course, once the bobbin winder was working the needle wouldn't move. By this time, I knew what was wrong & really tightened down the big chrome plated screw. Thank you so much for your videos. The closest sewing machine repair is 30 miles away so anything I can do myself--I do.

@@BobFowlerWorkshop I would be happy to show you my soviet era machines and some behind story about them. Also I have two Tikkakoski sewing machines (part of reparations after WW II and exculsive export only for USSR) and war trophy Singer 15-88 made in Wittenberg (super rare here ). Ill try to get picture all of them tomorrow and send to your email.
The first model with big emblem - ПМЗ 1-А. This model produced on captured hardware from Wittenberg factory after WW II. First thousand of them made from german maded parts in 1943. Parts looks overclaimed. Earlier models have metal screws. Later screws made from carbolite, bobbin winder block made from cast aluminum. This model end producing after Stalin's death. I never seen manufacturing defects at this model.
The second model with circle small yellow emblem - ПМЗ 1-М. All parts changed to metric system. Cheaper parts, lower cast iron grade. Most of them dont have cut on base for bobbin winder thread tension, polymer balance wheel screw (they broke often), polymer handdrive attachment (earlier models from wood). This model most have most factory defects.
Soviet singer 127 - Made from england maded parts after 1917. Have overclaimed mark on serial numbers, soviet themed decals.
Tikka 45 and Tikkakoski - most accurate machines ever made, most accurate scews I ever seen, earlier model full metal. Late model have polymer balance wheel screw, polymer bobbin winder block, polymer shuttle "base", less metal in shafts and they looks like triangle.

Wow, I'm having an issue with the latch not fitting onto the bobbin. Never thought to pliers handle it into place! I've been *(^&^%$%##!!! all day long on this problem. Many thanks Bob!

Do you have a video showing how the spring to hold the winder up on a 15-125?
My bobbin winder won’t spring back towards me/away from the winder. The spring is there though and doesn’t look broken. Is there a way to increase the spring tension so that it works properly? Thank you!

Good question Tammy. That's usually because of gunk and oily schmoo built up on the stop motion bushing and the inside surface of the of the balance wheel. Loosen the limit screw on the stop motion know and remove it, then remove the stop motion washer taking care to note its orientation. Next clean the outside of the bushing that the balance wheel rides on, and the inside of the tunnel where the shaft goes through the balance wheel. When putting it back together, make sure the "bumps" on the stop motion washer go to the outside. You have a 50/50 chance of getting the washer set correctly when you go to retighten the limit screw. If it isn't working correctly (read that as you can't tighten the stop motion knob), then take the stop motion knob and washer off and rotate the washer 180 degrees. It's not as hard as it sounds!
Are there different sizes of bobbin tires because the original tire was much larger than the singer belt and tire replacement pack I bought the machine is a 1932 15-91
How do you adjust it to fill the bobbin? Mine shuts off and the bobbin is slightly more than half full.
First thing is to check the engagement, then if it shuts off early, you need to reform the shape of the follower slightly to allow more thread to go onto the bobbin. Use a non-marring plier to grip the follower and "gently" reform the spoon portion of the follower upwards ever so slightly. Only go a little at a time, and take care to keep the follower in the center of the bobbin.

I will make one comment and ask for help on another. Bob, when you set the bobbin into place there is something after YEARS of not knowing but just discovered, sit the bobbin on the winder, hold loosely...turn the bobbin tire slowly towards you and you will feel the bobbin pull to the right as the little "catch" that is on the base of spinner will click the bobbin into place by grabbing the notch we all have lacked to see I'm nearly sure. (you can' see "notch on video when you take tire off) no need to tweak to the right if sitting proper. Now you can lower arm and are ready to engage winding. Question: I can not loosen my screw to the right of the Shield I loosened the bobbin wheel screw and pressed it down it still is not touching the hand wheel to wind bobbin, I know it's the shield as the is not individual movement of that it must have been over tighten prior or thru age just frozen. Wondering? Drop of oil or wider mouth screw driver for torque ? It barely needs to move tiny bit more to make a connection it seems any ideas? Actually just watched again and you locked bobbin to spinner rod so matter of fact, Without mentioning the little notch on bobbin and catch on where bobbin seats.
I don't know how I missed this one, sorry... If I have a stuck fastener, my first inclination is to use Kroil to help free it up. As always, use a correct fitting screwdriver in the slot of the screw. In some cases, I will go so far as to use an impact driver (I have both an 18Volt Milwaukee and a 12 Volt Hercules) to loosen a stubborn fastener.
