How to form and pour a concrete slab for a shed or patio.
Diy concrete shed slab or diy concrete patio slab.
This video will show you how to form and pour a 15' x 12' concrete slab for a shed or patio.
This is a 6" thick concrete backyard patio slab that will eventually have a hot tub on it.
I was hired to form, pour, and finish this easy diy concrete slab. We used 2x6's for forms, leveled them with a laser level and tied a mat of rebar two feet on center for reinforcement.
I used 4000 psi concrete to pour the slab. Watch us form and pour the slab to learn out process and techniques.
If you want a step by step video course that teaches you how to do your own concrete slab, check out my CONCRETE SLAB course below.

Love your videos Mike
Thank you soo much for this video 😊
I just started watching today (August 26 2019 stamped patio w your daughters) . I hear CZcams subscribers say certain videos help with their anxiety. Watching certain concrete videos are just so satisfying. I find myself going to sleep. I love how everything is almost perfect in concrete laying. The pouring/smoothing making it nice😀. This is how I feel about my yard work.
No fair, Mike. Get Tia a bigger hammer! I love your videos. Not sure if I'll ever lay anything larger than a garage floor but if I do, I'll be ready. Take care!
Great work
Great job
Nice. Thx.
Look that you a good helper

I love the ladies ..... Great job always 💪🏻
EASY DYI ... your humor is great. Wonderful vid as usual. 3 thumbs up! Great work Tia
Good job 👍👍
Many many thanks
I use big blue 25oz best hammer for me.
Looking good I want to do double story house I want to make a contret slab on the the ground and lift it up on top of the walls by overhead crane is it possible if possible how to make it..... Ready mix track will bring the cement contret......
How does the leveling work? I couldn't see the laser of the level with how bright it is outside.
Thank you 🙏
You’re welcome 😊
Do it yourself, uses four people. 😂
Just kidding. Great video Mike.
Good stuff Mike!
Thank you!
Good looking work Mike. Made it look easy. Great video!
Thanks 👍
@@MikeDayConcrete making a slab that will be against a house on one side. Can you pour that side of the slab directly to the house or do you need to make a complete frame so there's a gap between the house and the slab?
@@erikhamilton4866 use expansion joint against the house.
Hi, Mike. Can i pour a 6in. x 18' x24' concrete rebar reinforced slab over a cracked, uneven existing concrete slab? There may be a few inches of stone underneath the slab. We're in northeast Pennsylvania. Thanks. Dale Kline.
Could you split that pad in sections with additional 2x6 so a person could do it in sections and just fill the gaps with stone?
Why leave the string line during the finishing?
What do you do in winter?
You guys since I started watching do an amazing job 👏. Honestly I had not seeing a quality job before, it looks to me other concrete companies do half way job and move to the next crappie job to get the all mighty dollar $$, your company do a high quality job, I bet you are very busy. Thanks 😊 for the video.
Thank you! 😊
Can I ask why 6” high? I suppose the thickness would depend on how it’s used but if it’s just a patio slab or gazebo slap what depth would you recommend?
I want to commend you for teaching women in this non-traditional job. I’m sure you know from your daughter’s great work that women can perform very well in traditional men’s jobs.
What was the string for. She wrapped it around the stakes
What slump did you pour?
Mike do you only do flat work no walls?
To Mike 👍🇺🇲 have you considered a self coiling machine to do wiring up on the reinforcement bars just an idea from Australia 👍🇦🇺 like the videos 👍🇺🇲😀
What's the difference between the concrete underground course and the "How To Stamp Concrete" course?
I am interested in the course. I checked out the website but there’s no “contact” option. I live far away from town and would need to mix the concrete myself. Do you also teach people about concrete mixers and mixing concrete?
There're CZcams videos with a dry pouring technique that I found interesting: all steps for pouring are followed, except that the concrete is poured dried, then water is sprayed over the concrete several times, with intervals of 1.5 and 2 hours. The labor is cutted by more than half, and the finish product is very impressive
What part of the US are you in?
What does the concrete driver do with excess if you order too much? Does he have to dump it on site? Can he take it back? I realise I would be on the hook monetarily but I just don't want a pile of concrete in my driveway. Also, do they give you a time-limit to unload the truck?
No, they take back what they don't use out of what you ordered. There will be some left in the chute when you finish that will need to be washed out on site somewhere. That will leave a pile of water and aggregate that you can clean up later or plan to contain. Usually I just use one or two wheel barrels for that.
I forgot to mention that yes there is usually a time limit per yard to get it off the truck and that's going to vary from company to company so you will want to check with your supplier
You said it's on a foot depth of gravel? You mean 1 inch?
Mike - I can see Tia being the boss someday when you retire!
what someday...she is now!!
Thanks for the video Mike. What is your recommendation on 6 mil plastic above the gravel for a slab for a shed?
How many bags of concrete
6" with rebar for a patio slab on a good base? That is a no joke patio
Have you tried the fiberglass rebar yet?
I can't get it around here yet.
What size spikes are you using ?
We use 18" and 24" for stakes
When you add a concrete slab against a house with a slab, do you have to drill rebar into the house slab foundation so that the slab you pour can anchor to it?
No
The guy filming this video has shown on other projects that he puts a strip of foam between an existing foundation and the new slab so that they can move independently. You can then put caulk overtop of the foam if you want to make it look cleaner.
Yes, otherwise the new slab will drift away from the house with the expansion and contraction of the soil. Al least in Texas where the soil is clay dirt.
16:09 LOL
Lol. I cracked up too 😂
@@wynnindoubt6674 Haha, get back to work boys!
19' 2" 9/16.
👍! Always exact, 100% of the time…and faster.
I can’t find part 2.
You did rebar instead of mesh because of the hot tube weight?
Partly yes. It's what I spec'd in the slab, easy to install.
Did you put a slope to that pad?
A little one.
6" thick on a foot of base. Dang! That is robust!
Can 1 person pour a slab that is 13'x16' or is that too much for 1 person to do?
I know a person who did that. He also mixed own concrete with hd mixer sand rocks and cement. Took a day though
That same person is going to pour a slab 15*80 sometime in June, this time with mixed concrete delivery 😀
The only thing I would've done different is the steel on 16" centers. Other than that preference, nice job!
Could you use a slab like this for a parking pad?
Yes, the slab is thick enough and with supporting rebar is sufficient for a parking space.
Yes, with the right gravel sub-base for your area.
So what happens if you just bullfloat and broomsweep a slab?
Does this cause issues?
Nope
That's most outdoor concrete
@16:08 😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂
What is the purpose of the string line?
I would say to keep the forms straight as the put the support rods in.
@@gordchase2806 -- That makes sense. Thanks!
Also There is hydraulic pressure from the concrete being that thick and of it bows out hell be able to see it
@@johnnyinthehellcat4092 That is not right a string line is not left up on pour day. It is used when forming.
What is the price of this cement slab?
Anywhere from 4 to $7 a square foot.
@@craftman5632 Thank you for answering my question.
You have buy Tia a bigger hammer Mike. I think she's earnt it 🤣
I think I’d take the girl over any of the other employees she out worked every guy on this job site.
Does Tia have long finger made up nails? how does she do it if she does.
16:10 I would be staring too
Square with the slope in the tape measure isn't to accurate, gota be a tight pull.
Unless you measure it both ways with the same slack in the tape measure ...
Mike get your Daughter a bigger hammer!😊
That’s not his daughter
Off topic for this specific video, but if your don't mind... I'm building a house with a basement, how long would you wait to spray radon seal on the basement walls and floor after it's been poured? And would you still recommend radon seal or something else now?
At least 30 days or anytime after that. Still a really good sealer, yes.
I click on these vids just to see his daughter....OH and the other shtuff too. She is a worker and know exactly what to do & when. Let's hope people don't take advantage of her persistence & drive. I like to work like her, but over time I'm the one working while everyone else is "on break" and that piss' me off to no end and ruins my drive.
Always respect the honor of family.
Set your stakes lower than the form, its just commonly done.
Mike typically does NOT use the top of the forms to screed against. He mag floats the material at the edges, then uses those to screed to.
That is not necessary. Pour concrete everyday and you'll know why your not wasting your time beating the hell out of every pin you set.
Or use a laser and an aliminium screed like a real concreter does. This wooden screed shit is from the 50s get with the times.
Not sure how she could be working with long finger nails like that.😆
Yes Tia needs a bigger hammer!!! :-)
Stupid question,
Don't you need a rat wall or footer?
Not for a slab
Don’t take this the wrong way but having the concrete delivered isn’t exactly DIY. I tuned in to see what it would take to do this DIY.
Lol that is DIY, if your smart you will do it this way. Instead of buying pallets of bags and needing more people to mix and wheel barrow risking the concrete taking off to much
What causes diabetes?
Just wondering, What nationality is Tia? She looks asian.
what nationality are you? you look alien
It looks like beautiful girls do make guys go cuckoo because Tia is driving me crazy I will literally literally will break my back To give her the luxury she deserves
You don't even know the girl. Give it a rest!
HOW TO MAKE A HOW TO VIDEO... :/
Well, I think this guy is assuming you’re a man and assuming you can figure out some of it 😂😂😂 unfortunately he didn’t account for 🧚♀️ like you 😂😂😂😂
Overkill
No word on grade materials, or is topsoil perfect in this area...I doubt it. Maybe this is covered in his course he's offering us to buy. Lots of wasted time here with no explanations. Sorry, this one is thumbs down from me. Too much unexplained when could have been said but chose not to do so.
