  • In this drama-documentary series, Dr. Suzannah Lipscomb goes in search of the origins of the deadly craze of witch hunts and trials that infected the British Isles 400 years ago. Through original documents and powerful drama, Suzannah uncovers the fears that drove the persecutors to such lengths and what it was like for the innocent victims tortured and executed for crimes they didn't commit.
    James I’s son, Charles, pretty much ended the hunting and execution of witches. But then the Civil War engulfed England, and Charles lost control.

    I find it fascinating that through history, those who wanted to demonstrate that they were "good Christians" repeatedly chose the most grievously misinterpreted verses in the, typically, Old Testament, which Jesus, as we know, sought to correct through his teachings...Judge lest ye be judged....thee without sin cast the first stone.....etc. and this still is the case today. The story of Sodom and Lot has been used to condemn and kill homosexuals and anyone who performs some sexual act that is considered "unnatural" even though rabbis and theologians have stated that the Story of Sodom is not about sex acts or homosexuality but about how visiting angels/strangers were not treated in a hospitable way, which was a pillar of the religions of that time. The strangers, who turn out to be angels, were treated horribly, and those from Sodom were punished for it. Another...the verse in Leviticus, again about "man shall not lie with man as with a woman"...used for thousands of years against homosexuals, has nothing to do with homosexuals (or women would have been included in that verse) but with building a Jewish nation and if men were having sex with other men, there would be a lower birth rate. Rabbis and theologians have stated that it is not an anti-homosexual verse and they believe this because it is tied to another verse that a man's "seed" shall not be spilled anywhere but in a woman. Again, to keep birth rates going up. Anyway, it amazes me and saddens me how scripture is taken and used in any way one wants. In this video, in order to get what they want and if people have to die for it, then so be it. It happens above in this historically correct video as it happened in Salem later in the same century. These actions would, per my beliefs, would do nothing to raise one's esteem in Jesus's eyes. The Bible, both Testaments, have been used for such evil that so often, one forgets that it was (including the Quran) written for peaceful reasons. Sorry for having gone on.

    • @happyexpat3744
      @happyexpat3744 Před 3 lety +5

      @Rulya Mórrigan Ard Mhacha Sadly, I do have some idea....because it is not so different than how the Bible was used against people centuries ago, and even today, in certain parts of the world. I have seen gay men thrown off rooftops, women stoned or beaten for having a hair out of place, and the list goes on...not in every Muslim country, but in some and it isn't even for spiritual reasons but for political ones that the Quran is taken apart and interpreted as the priests or Imams or whomever wants it to be. I surely didn't mean to offend you.

      @scarlrtt13 Před 3 lety +2

      ah, someone who is wise and can think logically.
      Part of the reason isn't just misunderstanding text, but how the sermons are taught. They create this emotional bias and need to be right (as being wrong means hell). For centuries they use fear and emotional priming to get those who will not question or do not know how to critically think to play, "soldiers for god". They then start priming their children, you are actively taught not to question the "word of god" that is coming from a Humans mouth or lest you get persecuted. I remember being a preteen and the pastor basically said if you aren't baptised you are going to burn and that innocent stillbirths and newborns who perish, who were not baptised were going to hell for simply existing.
      They wave the fear of gods wrath and hellfire above the heads of the people creating sub-servants. If you look at it, a lot of extr3mi5ts and t3rr0r1sts are devoutly religious (it creates the perfect mental and emotional environment for their creation) and only believe the interpretation they have been taught and will never critically and empathetically think. A perfect eg is the 1930-1943 leader of Germany, who was very catholic/Christian (at least in the beginning but he used it to pull people to his side). A person raised in religion is more likely to support religious rhetoric (even if it's fake and dangerous, modern examples see everything having to do with C18H26CIN3O) over logic. Look at how televangelism and mlms are linked and you see the priming in real-time. czcams.com/video/7btz0ocXDeg/video.html (to start)
      If you look into the history of the crusades you see the psychological priming and manipulation in its infancy with the different popes pushing for war with Islam and Judaism saying it was for the Holy land but in reality, it was for money and power. They promised anyone who fought in the war would get a fast pass to heaven. The first crusade was the worst and most vicious due to the lengths of the brutality done to all who stood in the peasant armies path. Also, the templars, the organisation created by nobles and the church to fight " heretics" ie everyone who wasn't Catholic/Christian, were burnt at the stake because the pope and king of France in 1300 wanted money and the templars began to stand up for the right of the people (regardless of religion, at least that's the account) instead of being subservient to the will of the pope and guess the public reason that was given and the one most ran with for their burning... seriously guess... (Jeopardy music)...
      .
      .
      .

      .

Absurd, frightening, tragic. NONE of this was in accordance with the New Testament. "Go and sin no more" was the message. "Witches", normally old women, 99% women, who simply knew herblore and were usually killed for it. I know the Roman Church does many a good thing as they are, outside government, the largest charity in the world..but they need to exorcize the old world suspicions that they keep tied to their dogma. After all, they could easily spin it as the witch was accusing the judge and witch hunters of being witches themselves because the witch worked for the devil and these men were doing "God's work". In the minds of people in that society, it would be just like the devil to try and have the "true" servants of God denounced and save his own follower, the accused witch.
