    What I don't understand is, if witches are powerful enough to kill with a curse or cause a storm at sea, then how are they sitting around in prison and let themselves be tortured helplessly? Does the devil give and take their powers at times? What was the logic? Very interesting, chilling documentary, thanks for uploading!

      It's actually quite simple. The prosecutors, the men that went after people accused of witchcraft, were men of God. And, therefore, they were more powerful than anything the Devil could do or influence people to do. They were acting by the grace of God, protected by Him, so those involved with Satan would perish by the hand of God, working through men.

      It wasn't a gender specific term then and though it seems women were disproportionately targeted many men, even clergymen, were hanged. Much of these rumours were spread by townsfolk and men and women alike showed up to the spectacles of executions. The lesson to take away from this isn't to single out males as more evil, it's that blind adherence to religion is dangerous.

If someone isn't old enough without being shown it , then they'd simply be too traumatized from watching.

These were men hell bent on dominating wo.en and having sexual and political power over them. Of course it happened to men too, and we need to remember them as well but the vast majority of victims were young women.
    Its not okay whats going on now, but its a huge leap to compare it to the collective rape, torture and murder of thousands of innocent womens and men. Its would be like comparing your broken leg to the death of someone else

    I'm a bit confused as to how the British Isles wouldn't have had issues with witch hunts and accusations before this particular incident of one king going to Denmark? I guess it's just the wording of it, and this focuses on the "trials" part? Christianity came to the British Isles centuries before this, and would certainly have clashed with the religions already present and caused people to wrongfully accuse each other of all sorts of things.
    These programs are fascinating, and I love the excerpts from primary sources that they're able to dig up, but sometimes the titles of the videos are a bit vague.

      The Catholic Church, for all its faults, didn’t believe that witches were all over place. The infamous Malleus might have been written by a German Dominican Monk, but the Inquisition rejected its findings & recommendations, so the Church rejected it. Protestant Europe, on the other hand, ate it up enthusiastically.

But just for the sake of fact, i want to emphasize that it wasn't like thousands, tens of thousands, or hundreds of thousands. From my experience many people want to add to the very real severity of the witch hunting by claiming that many more people were killed. Like that it was tens of thousands. It wasn't.

    There is a book I read at a University in the history course that often the peasants, especially farmers, had various pagan traditions described simply as various rituals and superstitions that were for celebrations of and blessing of the harvests. There was no satan related witchcraft of course. But the clergy and the clerics hated it so they made up stories about something they didn't understand.

    • @molliwilson5639
      @molliwilson5639 Před 6 měsíci

      Yes, we all know that( those of us with a college education that is).. the belief in witches , and our fear of them is a Psychological study in how religion controlled the masses by ending paganism . There is a lot of Psychological reasons that exist WAY beyond people’s belief and fear of witchcraft then and now.

    With the amount of so called witches that were tortured you would think that if there was such thing amd they were real that during all the torture that one would have cast a spell and turned someone into a road or made them die someone or made herself disappear instead of going thru the torture she would have used her powers to realise herself lol. If they were smart they would have said the man torturing them was the witch and he was covering it up that way he would have been killed aswell and ofcourse they would know things said by the king and queen they had servants all around all the time and ears were always listening lol ,but clearly they only confessed to make the torture stop and to get out of living and rotting in the horrible prisons that make them go mad in the head till they believe they were witches
