This process won't work while using a BASS TUNER APP versus a tuner that you plug from guitar to tuner OR should it matter? That's what I use A TUNER APP that I think works great for me.
But I can't get a reading off any of the strings from the 12th fret pluck like in your video. But no big deal because I tinkered with it for a hr or more and it sounds better , plays better and smoother, and my pickup switch is working correctly again
Hey man- I would assume it would work with a bass tuner, especially on a bass, but I can't be sure without seeing it myself. And that's weird that you can't get a reading on the 12th fret. The higher the pitch, the more a tuner usually likes a note!

Rob you never disappoint. They are a bunch of videos with this topic and many other guitar topics and all the other videos just don't cut it for me. With robs videos its a whole different ball game. Every thing he teaches and shows i always understand it better then the other videos. He alway gives the best info and will explain it to were you can understand it all. I've watched many other CZcams videos and alot of them just don't do it for me and I lose my attention fast. Great video dude! Fun to watch! So many people don't know this. I remember back in the day so many players would complain that their Floyd goes out of tune after dive bombing. This is why. I could be a maniac with the bar and my guitars never go out of tune.

I'm so glad I stumbled across this video this video and the adjusting the truss rod really helped me I'm a complete amateur when it comes to truss rod adjusting and moving the saddles but after watching you I felt like a semi pro thanks for sharing your knowledge

All of my fiddles are equipped with evertune now. You’ve actually inspired me to start setting up my own guitars rather then pay someone else how to do it. Thanks for this, Rob. I have a Schecter with a Hipshot bridge like your guitar here and don't know how to adjust intonation or action for that matter. However, in my defense, I'm mainly a drummer and just play guitar a little on the side but this is information I need to know so I don't have to keep paying someone else to do it for me. Position also affects string rotation/orbit. Having it in playing position is ideal.
Alot of videos on youtube don't actually show how to intonate bridges but yours was informative,my guitar has the les paul type bridge,simple and super easy,love that natural curve

One thing I always do when doing a setup is I always tune up to the note when tuning. I never tune down to pitch ,I've found that doing that can give you a false tune . Just what I do. Great vid as always brother 👍

I cannot say or give enough thanks to all yall guys that give perfect information to dedicated players that can't learn enough.
I'll say this tho MY WASHBURN BASS wasn't very far off. And I set my action up after I learned how OFF A VIDEO SIMILAR a couple years ago..( before I would let a local SEASONED ) work on my stuff.
I would like some wiring info for an ACTIVE EMG setup. I have an late 80s or early 90s WASHBURN ABT with a 9v pot in the body.
Learned a tuning trick the other day on CZcams,
When you're trying to perfectly tune when intonating for instance,
Switch to the neck pickup and lower the tone knob on the guitar just about 10%
Somehow this gives a much better reading on digital tuners, as if there's less "noise" interfering the signal of the pickup or something like that.

Thank you so much! I just finished setting up my Tele using your method here. I even used the app of the tuner you used. (Yes, I know the app probably isn't as accurate as the real thing, but it's what I have.)
Setting the intonation was a bit of a pain in the ass cuz it's my first time & the heavier strings are harder to set, just like you said, but I FINALLY got green lights for both the open string and the fretted 12th fret on all 6 strings, so that's good enough for me!
Definitely gonna subscribe to your channel! My dream is to someday build & set up my own guitar from scratch using Warmoth parts & now I am this much closer to that goal. 👌

This is by far the easiest to follow video on this on all of youtube. I've watched TONS of them. l always doubt myself so I constantly refresh my memory (years of weed will do that kids, stay away till you're an adult)

5:38 a note is a certain frequency, so the string produces that frequency. Lower frequencies equal longer wavelengths and vice versa. That's why a low pitch instrument, like a bass, has a longer scale length (obviously string tension is also a factor). But that basically means, if it is sharp, you have to elongate the measure and if it's flat you have to shorten the measure (basically "stretching" and "squeezing" the wave). :)

Very good video! I've been intonating my guitars on my own for ages, but I always forget which way to adjust the saddles. That "chase the needle" hint will stick, seriously good advice.
Regarding the lower strings, have you considered tuning by harmonic overtones? You can strike the 5th, 7th and/or 9th fret harmonic and tune that, then strike the octave at 17th, 19th and/or 21st fret and see how well they are in tune. I find those much more consistent than the loose and wobbly open low strings.
Great to hear man! Even though I've done this a ton of times now, I too still have to think about which way to move the saddles, and as you said, the chase the needle hint helps every time! And yes, I'll often take a look at various harmonic overtones as well, and I like to try and take the average between the open, the fretted 12th, and the natural harmonics!
when lowering the pitch, you should pass the middle a little, and then give it a tiny tug. then tune it UP to pitch. it will help since theres no locking nut ;)

One thing I’ve noticed when doing set ups, if you roll your tone knob down, and use the neck pup. You’ll get more accurate reading on the tuner. I mean I use a Peterson strobe tuner for my set ups, just cause how accurate they are, and with me using 7 strings and low tunings it really helps with the wound strings. Another thing that helps is backing the pick ups down a bit. It helps with not getting those blips you mentioned. Killer vid bro

Even though I'm familiar with adjusting intonation, I still like watching videos like this. It's a good refresher, at least. I have the same guitar, but the 2020 model. I ended up swapping out the Fishmans for the EMG 81/60 combo.
Shoot, my low E dances around perfect and I'm tuned to E flat with 11-52 strings. That's on my EC-1001, though. My M-1000 lives in D and drop C, occasionally, and it seems to be a little more stable with tuning.

@@RobArnoldWorld Yeah, they're pretty nice, especially the Eclipse. I've been an ESP/LTD fan for many years now. They just have a nice fit and finish to them and have a good feel to them. My Eclipse was a B-stock, so I got it for a good price. I put a GraphTech nut on both guitars and what an improvement.
EMGs over Fishmans all day any day, eh?!!! 😀👍🏼
I did the same with my Schecter SLS Elite Evil Twin. It came with Fishman Fluence Moderns but I just really did not dig the sound of them. Had them swapped for the EMG 81/60 and it sounds much better now. Fishmans are great pickups but I feel they're a bit overrated.
@@patrickolivier1 Yeah, I tried the Fluence Modern pickups for about 6 months before I changed them out for my go-to EMG 81/60 combo and I immediately heard a drastic difference. EMGs just have a nasty snarl about them, especially the 81, and I love the bluesy sound of the 60. The 60 is quite killer in the bridge, too.

Thanks for the great video. What is your recommendation on intonation on guitar tuned a half step down?
Sure thing! I'd say no matter what you're tuned to, it's always a good idea to check your intonation every once and while, like maybe 2-3 times per year, or certainly whenever you're hearing pitch discrepancies from octaves. For instance, if you pick the 5th fret on your low E (6th) string, you should get the same reading on your tuner when you pluck the 17th fret on the same string, which is a whole octave higher. If they don't register the same on the tuner, then an adjustment to that strings intonation is probably necessary. But I recommend using the open and 12th fret octaves like I demonstrate in the video, when you go to make your adjustments.
Great video! Often overlooked, intonation is just as important as any other aspect of setup/ maintenance. I can't tell you how many used guitars I come across that have all the saddles in a perfect line, a tell tale that they didn't intonate the guitar. It's sad because they probably gave up on the instrument without the guitar ever being set up properly and allowed to shine.
I just got an Ibanez bass for $100 used that had a terrible setup with high action, a couple high frets, improper intonation, and fret sprout. The guy hated the bass and I probably could have talked him into giving it to me for free. I set it up with the used strings for proper relief, action, and intonation and played it for about 2 weeks to assess the fret needs. I ended up doing a full fret level , crown, and polish and I filed and rounded the fret ends and rolled the fingerboard edge. Finished up with new strings and setup + intonation and I have a gigable $100 bass.
I absolutely enjoy the process of bringing an instrument back to life that is so close to being thrown away. The neck is SOOOO comfortable now and the bass really shines. I know it's better than it was new.
I get that maintenance is for everyone, and if it's not, that's fair... just make sure your gear gets visits to a qualified tech that will make it all that it can be.

If you’re looking to do it, pick up a used Squier affinity for $100 and I guarantee the frets need leveling. When you’re done you can give it away or sell it for what you paid.

my intonation is off on the A string. I moved the saddle back even to the fardest, it did nothing still the same. I go ok it's the other way so I do it twice again putting it at the fardest it still off. lol bottom line? your guess is as good as mine. forget about it is my answer.

Rob , how does changing the neck effect intonation? Should you shoot for 25.5 “ from nut to saddle ? Making sure the distance from but to the 12th fret is the same as 12th to the saddle?
Not sure! I guess that's not the way I think about it. I never take any actual measurements into consideration. Or maybe I'm just misunderstanding your question?
When are we adjusting intonation is it fine to be one level ahead or behind on (I'm trying to mean example when are we adjusting E string and checking on 12th fret and indicator showing 1 or 2 level up or low) tuner indicator or is it fine ? and can I use clip tuners when I'm adjusting intonation?
With intonation, you need to be as accurate as possible, or it's not worth doing at all. So I would aim for perfection and get as close as you can. Any tuner will do, but the better the tuner, the better the results!

Hi, thanks for the great video. My guitar is a multiscale 7 string and it doesn't seem like adjusting the scale length is getting my notes on the higher frets in tune. I even loosened the screw so much that it came off the guitar and the saddle fell on the floor.
Is this an indication that I need to adjust my truss rod? I can't see with my eyes if the neck is bowed, but I'm not sure how to check.

Unfortunately I'm not familiar with how multi scale guitars function and behave, especially in terms of intonation. Your question though has my gears turning about making a video demonstrating how to look down the neck and what to look for, to help better determine how necessary a truss rod adjustment may be. Awesome video helped a ton, question my open and 12th on my low g# on my 7 are lining up good but my 24th fret is still pretty off. What steps do I take to correct this?
Thanks man! Happy to hear it. Typically, the 12th fret is where we're trying to get tuning consistency between the open note, and the fretted 12th fret, because it's the mid-way point, or the happy medium. Trying to get perfect tune at the 24th fret is asking a lot, and so you just want to get as close as possible. The name of the game is getting as close to perfect tune across the entire fretboard that you can. So much of the time, it's all about finding the happy medium. 🎸

Yo Mark! Just remember that intonation is always the LAST step. Think of it like the finishing touch. Every adjustment you make, in terms of tuning, neck relief, string height, float, etc.., is then finalized by dialing in perfect intonation. Every adjustment you make, will have an affect on your intonation, so therefor it's always the last step.

Awesome man! Lately I've been using the Amazon Basics batteries, but you can never go wrong with the traditional heavy hitters like Duracell or Energizer.
As long as you always remember to unplug your guitar cable from your guitar after each session, the battery should last a year or more.

My old tuner had a needle and I found to be very good to use. One thing I'd like to ask you Rob. What is the longest time that you had strings on any of your guitars ? and does it harm the neck of any other part of the guitar with having strings on for a long time .
I like the feel of fresh strings, so on guitars that I play often, I change the strings often. But I have many guitars I don't touch for YEARS, and the strings just sit on them with no issues, other than aging. Guitars are meant to have strings on them, and so they certainly don't mind them. You can leave a set on for decades, and some will say that will only improve the nature of that instrument!🎸

Hey man, just wondering. How can I tell whether or not I should raise the bridge? I have an ML1 Modern Standard Baritone with a Chapman String-Through Hardtail. And I've tried intonating that bottom low E string (I'm in drop G#) and the tuning of that bottom string is absolutely driving me insane. I've got it as close as I can get but I just wonder if it'd be easier if I lowered or heightened the bridge of that specific string? I'm just wondering if you could help me out or if anyone knows. You know, I've noticed that too. But I think getting it right at the 12th fret is the happy medium. So that's where I put my focus.
That depends on how much sents is it off actually :) Often after the nut (1-2, up to 5th fret) you can notice sharper notes, especially if nut has not been cut properly. Also, it depends on the level of neck relief and quality of fret work. I have few guitars that are almost spot on across all the fretboard (they are off by 1-4 cents). Also, I had 2 Harley Benton Amaroks that had strange bridge position, where last low string could not be intonated properly, saddle was the whole way back, even without a spring. With spring and maxed saddle 20-24 frets were like 17-25 cents off, which is very noticeable (and it was standard tuning, not even talking about drop/lower ones). So worst cases for that are: wrong position for the bridge > badly cut nut > some high frets :) But there is no such thing as absolutely perfect intonation on fretted instruments and without true temperament frets :)
BUT before you think all hope is gone - try to change strings, sometimes they are the problem :)

If a string is sharp, the string needs to be lengthened to flatten it. Conversely, if the note is flat, the string needs to be shortened. So making a string longer makes it flatter, while making it shorter makes it sharper.Jan 7, 2016

So with active pickups, as you may know, if you keep your cable plugged into your guitar, it's constantly draining the battery. So just remember to always unplug the cable from your guitar when you're not jamming. And if you do that, I'd say a 9 volt should last you more than a year at least. I have guitars that have been cased up for 5 years plus, and I'll bet the 9volt is still good in them. When in doubt, just give it the ol' tongue test!

If sharp tighten towards the bridge and if flat lossen away from bridge? Just tried intonation this weekend and was totally doing the opposite... :/ Time to go back and do it right.

General rule of thumb is if the fretted note is sharp, then the saddle needs to be moved back. If the fretted note is flat, the saddle needs to be moved forward. Flat, forward -- sharp, back. I always have to tell myself this when adjusting intonation, lol. 😁
@Booty McNasteez Since your saddles are IN your bridge, you wouldn't really want to say it the way you've said it. Instead, think of it in the same way, but use the guitars NECK or pickups as a point of reference.
If sharp move the saddle away from the neck. If flat, move the saddle towards the neck.

Whenever I'm about to do an intonation on either my Tele och Stratocaster, with my string action settled, I get an irritating sitar like/buzzing sound. Fine adjusting the saddles makes it go away, but then the intonation is way off. It's a never ending cycle. Intonation, sitar like buzz, adjusting the saddle, ruined intonation. Back to square one. I don't know what I'm doing wrong. Could the gentle knocking on the saddles be the trick? Or is it that I've never considered loosening the strings when doing the intonation?

Thank you for replying. I have set my neck relief with a gague feeler, the action to 1.6 mm with the help of a radius gauge suitable to my neck radius. Everything is basically set. But I'm always failing when it comes to the intonation part. I think theres nothing wrong with the nut since the sitar like sound appears during freting and gets elimininated with slight modifications on the saddles.
That sounds odd! I wouldn't think to associate fret buzz with string length. Perhaps you should take it to a pro for one great setup, which then you can use as a baseline moving forward.@@viktorjohansson90
Hey Rob, I think you answered this on another video, but I can't find it for the life of me. One of my middle strings just won't intonate and I've also run out of room with the screw and it won't turn anymore. What can I do in this situation? I tried detuning it and moving the saddle back a bunch, but it's still not helping. It seems to want to shorten until I have no screw room left.
Sometimes it's a combination of string gauge and whatever you're trying to tune to, that makes the string(s) not want to cooperate. What type of bridge are you working with? And what are the gauges and tuning you're going for?
@@RobArnoldWorld tune-o-matic on a MH400-NT. 11-52 in drop c. nothing too crazy. I recently had to majorly adjust relief and adjusted the bridge a tad. my strings are a little bit old, planning to swap those out soon. might just try resetting the saddle positions and starting from scratch.
Oh yeah man, strings become harder and harder to intonate as they get older. Definitely try starting with a fresh set, get all stretched out and tuned up, and even play around with it for a day or so to get it all worked in, then try the intonation process again.
