    この手の話をする時は言語間の距離を考慮しないといけないですよ、、、
    もしも日本の第二言語が韓国語や中国語ならほとんどの人が話せるようになっていると思います。これは日本語と言語間が近い国の英語力を見れば明らかな事です。

European languages have similar grammar and vocabulary, and among them English is the simplest, so everyone can speak it.
Don't you realize something so simple?

I have a Chinese friend who speaks and writes English in a complete American style. She was born and raised in Netherlands.

    That was interesting.
Let me add some more reasons (and make an excuse) why Japanese don’t speak English, “universal language”.
One thing is English and Japanese seem like almost opposite languages as you might know. There are very little similarities in terms of pronunciation, grammar, phrases and expressions. Direct translation means nothing between these two languages.
Second, Japanese has many complicated vocabularies like from physics technical terms to medical terms, all in kanji and Hiragana.
Because Japanese has had relatively high education system since several hundred years ago, its language has absorbed new terms and created translation.
When you go to university in Japan and take classes, you’ll notice all of them are done in Japanese, whereas many other countries including Europe, Singapore and so on are different.
Like Adam said, we are less likely to be faced with the need to speak English both geographically and educationally.
But yeah, nowadays the situation is changing though.

The reason Europeans speak English for mutual understanding is because they are too close to other countries and not to start World War III. The reason people in South America and Africa and Asian countries speak English or Spanish or French as a second language is because they were colonized, dominated, and their education was taken over by westerners before they could improve their own language education.

    アメリカの第二言語は何なの?イギリスの第二言語は何なの?もしかして第二言語は必要としないの?もしも第二言語があるなら、それを話すことが出来る人は何パーセントいるの?

      動画冒頭でアメリカはSpanishと言ってますよ、またイギリスは仮定ですが同様に西洋の言語を学んでいるでしょう。
      日本人が英語を話せる割合が3割だとするとおそらくそれよりは多いでしょう。これは言語同士が似たルーツを持つからです。
