Mimeophon

  • Mimeophon is definitely my favorite module in my rack. It's not a conventional delay, it's a 'stereo multi-zone color repeater'. So what's the difference? Mimeophon works with 8 zones, where each zone captures your performance in a different time domain, and all zones affect eachother. You can flange a sound or create complex modulated chorus effects, delays, echo's and ever evolving loops in a sliding window of 42 seconds. In this 'long repeat' you can layer sounds and loop patterns while keeping a relationship with a master clock.
    You may have seen lots of videos about the Mimeophon already, but this one is about the Mime in its comfort zone, the Shared System and the Tape & Microsound Music Machine. But it will do wonders in your own case too.
    Mimeophon is coded by Tom Erbe, who also did the Erbe-Verb and Echophon. If you'd need to compare Mimeophon to the older Echophon, I'd say the Mime is a fancy digital delay designer and the Echophon is a vintage tape echo with a feedback loop. So you could run the feedback loop through the Mime and back into the Echophon. That would be a fun experiment!

    Ok it's been 4 months since my first comment on this video. I have Morphagene and Mimeophon, and Qpas should be here in a few days. After seeing this video I am more blown away than the first viewing. I'm speechless by the shear power and creativity of you with these modules. Outstanding.

    Love these videos! You Are doing a brilliant job showcasing techniques and modules. Relaxing and exciting at the same time. If you want to go further I think adding an extra camera angle would be awesome. I was pretty surprised you didn’t include the Zone 0 wild distorted guitar sounds when modulating colour more extremely, but I guess most already have seen that in the Loopop video. Nice with some new use cases instead!

      Thanks for your feedback, but hey, I am just an amateur trying to get the best quality with just a phone and a tripod. But I have a second phone and a second tripod. However, I have to work in the closet space (no studio yet), closet is in the living room (to hide it when people come to visit) and with two tripods i can't move myself anymore :). Now it's often pretty hard to keep my arms out of the way and to patch a CV input that's really hard to see from my point of view.

    Hey man, awesome video. I just posted on reddit that I saved money for an ES-9 but that I could not find it available anywhere in europe. I also mentioned that if I did not find it, I'd go for a QPAS plus Mimeophon combo instead. Well, after watching this video, I got even more pushed towards the latter option!

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  Před 4 lety

      Adding an ES-9 is a great choice if you want to use your PC with your modular and it seriously extends your potential. Mimeophon does the same for you if you want to stay far away from the PC :). Choices....

    Hi there. I've been enjoying your videos. Can the Mimeophon function as a serviceable reverb as well?

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  Před 3 lety +1

      The 'halo' smears the repeats into a blur, and you can dim the delay lines with 'color', so you can get a reverb out of it, but it will not offer the possibilities of a dedicated reverb module.

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  Před 3 lety

      I never had any problems with it, no noise, nothing. If you hear noise with mix all dry, you either have a bad powersupply or a bad Mime.

    I have a 4ms dld and like it a lot. I'm debating the mimeophon also. I just wonder if the two would be redundant, or they are different enough to both have a use.

    • @CinematicLaboratory
      @CinematicLaboratory  Před 2 lety +1

      I guess it depends on how important a delay is for your music or how important it is to transform a delay into something completely alien. Mimeophon is a musical instrument that also happens to do a pretty decent delay, but there's 'make noise' on the panel. It can make a lot.
