    This is thing that "mcdonalds ice cream machines are always broken" is so funny to me. Here in Chile, mcdonalds ice creams are so popular that there are mini stands of Mc that only sell the ice cream. I never were in a Mc where the machine dosen't work, just has one or two time the classic "we are out of ice cream", but does where really late at night, so I guess it doesn't count.

    I used to work at McDonalds, and it was my job to clean the ice cream machines once a fortnight. Because apparently cleaning the entire kitchen, while still making food and restocking the restaurant by myself as the night shift wasn't enough work... I had to pull it apart, scrub every piece, and then put it back together. The "self-cleaning" is always the reason the machine stops working, a few times I even had to empty the machine of the hot shake and ice cream mixes.

    What's most interesting to me is how this slowly creeped in. 50 years ago we were a culture that took such pride in repairing what we owned, having the freedom to repair what we own, extending the natural life of our own property. It's not like someone flipped a switch and then magically, everything from cameras to medical equipment to agricultural devices and consumer electronics were all unfixable. It was a slow creep over time to the point that most people didn't even notice until past decade.
    Thank you for going over this that more people have an idea what is happening, so that hopefully we can reverse it together!

    Right to repair is really, really important, especially when big companies like Apple are notoriously bad at fixing their own products, but your local small repair shop downtown which is a jack-of-all-trades can not only do it faster and cheaper more often than not, they may also treat you less like an idiot and more like an actual human being.

      @jojidubi4 Před 2 lety +51

    As a person who has worked for McDonald’s the reason the ice cream are always down is because some stores don’t clean or maintain their machines daily and can cause malfunctions. How? 2 franchise owners signed their contracts during a time when Taylor was having labor disputes, and rather than lose the franchisees, McD's allowed a change in the contract. That means there are 12 McD's in the USA, in TN and GA, that have soft serve machines made by Vevor. And you know what? I've never seen their machines on the fritz.

    As someone who works at McDonald’s 2023 in the UK I have noticed the main problem with the machine is these three things
    1 people haven’t been taught how to use it probably and therefore the ice cream is often not chilled properly and therefore you get runny ice cream and milkshakes.
    2 the machine is being cleaned/ refilled
    3 the base product (the thing that makes Ice cream or milkshakes) has run out so u can’t make the ice cream
    Sometimes but I don’t see this as often is the toppings for the Ice cream has run out and therefore the ice cream has been taken off the till, so there is ice cream but not toppings to make them and there is no option to just sell plain ice cream so the ice cream just get taken off the till completely

    @ankomitarashi-488 Před rokem

    Worked for mcd for several years. During that time, we maaaybe had to call out a tech ONCE to maintenance it. The main reason it ever went down, was either because the night/early morning crew forgot to do the heat cycle (yes, you can start it manually if it doesn't do it automatically), or because of it's automatic function to shut down for it's cleaning on a timed schedule. When it shut down for its cleaning schedule, you could not use it again until the ice cream base was drained and all the necessary parts were taken out of the machine. Once the main spiral in the machine is removed, a 5 minute timer counts down on the machine. During that time, you clean the parts, clean out the drums that hold the ice cream, and when the timer is done, you can put it back together, add the ice cream, and switch it back on. The whole process only takes about 20 minutes uninterrupted plus another 20 minutes or so for the machine and ice cream to be ready, but because of the amount of parts that need to come out and be put back, there is usually only 1 or 2 people that actually know how to do it/are trusted to do it properly. At the store I worked at, only 2 people knew how to clean the machine and both worked morning shifts, so if they weren't there when it was time for cleaning, there would be no ice cream until they worked again.
    Also, no matter what you told people, they would just declare it as 'broken'. Originally I would tell them it was down for cleaning, but then they would either ask how long it was going to take and get mad at the answer to that, or just say it was broken anyway. Sooo I just ended up telling people no ice cream, it's down lmao

    As someone who's worked at McDonald's for a few years, I can confirm that the shake machines were designed poorly. The most common reason for a shake machine to go down is the heat cycle failing. At the end of the cycle, the machine checks the mixture temperature, and if it's off by even 1 degree, it fails and locks itself up until next heat cycle is successful or is reset. Another reason for it to go down is if the machine is not brush cleaned (which is a pain to do). If not brushed cleaned, it'll go into freezer lock and won't work until cleaned, that's why we say "it's down for cleaning".

    I used to work for a McDonalds franchise. We used a different model, we had separate ice cream and shake machines. I don't remember ever having a Taylor tech in to service our machine, I just did it. There were two reasons our machines were ever down, because it was time for cleaning and if it locked up.
    Regardless of the heat cycle, every two weeks we were required to take the machine apart and clean all the parts and clean out the hopper. I'd usually do this early in the morning since fewer people want ice cream or shakes at 8am. But that thing would lock out if the night shift forgot to fill the hopper up the night before and it went into it's heat cycle low on mix. If that happened I was the only one in the store that was trained on how to disassemble and reassemble the machine and if was my day off, good luck getting a hold of me. At that point it was easier to just tell people it was broken then it needed cleaned.

Given, we had 2 at each location, so if one went down we still had ice cream (although I will say - it's annoying to run a store on just one ice cream machine. It gets really soft if a machine is used constantly). And throughout that entire time, we only had Taylor come in once to my store to repair one of our machines. We may have called a few other times, but we were able to fix it over the phone. As long as you clean your machine every week and exchange out the parts when new ones come in, they work just fine. 🤷‍♀️

I told them that the company also made stuff for McDonald's they all were amazed and said it made so much sense. It was hilarious honestly, but yeah if you're yogurt mountain isn't serving a certain flavor cuz of a machine, you can thank Taylor

So they have to tell customers a lot that the ice cream machine is down again so they can clean it for the 100th time that day

      i'm forced to counter argue this explanation, when i worked there the manager performed a deep clean once a week, and i don't have any explicit memory of it being down to be cleaned, except one time, which didn't even occur until the day before it was planned to be cleaned. i do, however remember telling a lot of people that the machine was down. the kicker is, we said it to everyone after 10pm, because it'd be shut off every day at that time. i think it was something about how it was better for the machine to be off than to be on all night, only being used a handful of times. and it made it easier on the crew since there were only a few of them at night.
      ****edited because i forgot to mention we always claimed it to be broken because there's no counter argument to that. if we said it was turned off, many people would expect us to turn it back on for them. but as crew, we don't get to make that decision.

      Same here in the Philippines, a country with a tropical climate. Climate that should make ice cream machines break. But I don't think I've ever been told that their ice cream isn't available because their machine is broken. And I think I know why:
      1. The Philippines is much smaller than the United States. So if service technicians do have to go around and repair machines, their travel time between stores is much shorter.
      2. The tropical climate means there's a strong demand for ice cream and other cold treats like milkshakes, pearl shakes and milk tea nearly all-year round. If McDonald's machines kept failing here as often as it does in the US, other international competitors like Dairy Queen and even local fast-food chains like Jolibee and Chowking would easily scoop up their market share. The demand is so strong that some branches have kiosks either integrated into the building or separate from it but still within their compound that only sell desserts where you could line up outside and get their cold fix quicker as opposed to going inside and waiting in line with everyone else dining in or ordering take-out.

The chore that always took the longest was taking apart the ice cream machine washing and sanitizing it. So we often said it was “broken” when in fact we just shut it down to clean it so we could get out of there quickly.

    The other reason, at least in my experience from working for McDonalds, was either A. lazy workers/managers, or B. customers not understanding that the machine is on an automatic timer.
    A. I had a manager that refused to make shakes or ice cream, & would resort to telling customers that the machine was broken or being cleaned. After a while of having our sales drop, I retorted what was really going on, & that manager was fired for it.
    B. Every night, the machine automatically shuts off at 2 am for the heat cleaning. Occasionally, we would have customers that would refuse to take no as an answer, or understand that the machine was about to shut off. Unfortunately, if we're in the process of making ice cream or a shake the very second the machine shuts off, it'll lock up the machine & result in us having to call the machine specialist

One of the biggest reasons that the machine isn't working is from freezer lock. That is caused by someone not putting mix into the machine. At one of the restaurants that I worked at. I was given 6 to 8 hours for a thorough cleaning and reassembly. Sometimes the mix will start getting to hard and that will cause a mechanical breakdown inside the machine that only a technician is able to fix

But when its not cleaning, our location would says it broken during rush hour or when were low on staff because the ice cream spurs out so slow that it messes with our fast food times. Especially when someone asks for more than 2 cones or sundaes. We found a way to make it go faster, by pulling out a pin and switching its side. Our manager hated when we did that so she put a lock on the machine so we don’t do it anymore 😅

    One of the best purchases I made during the height of this pandemic was the ice cream churn attachment for my Kitchenaid mixer. (Well, I also got those Dash My Pint mini ice cream churns for my kids, too, so they won't fight over what flavor to make.) Soft serve is great, but me and mine are all about homemade ice cream these days.

      Why not homemade soft serve?

    • @Craxin01
      @Craxin01 Před 2 lety +1

      @@kaldo8907 Most of the time, when you make ice cream at home, it's finished at a soft serve consistency, but it also melts very quickly. I usually make large batches and then firm them up in the freezer, which is what most home ice cream makers do. There are also specialized recipes that don't even need an ice cream maker, just whip the dairy to a whipped cream consistency before freezing. It's damned hard to keep the ice cream at a soft serve temperature, which is why those soft serve machines are so expensive. I've owned a few different ice cream makers, and if you're willing to make a small batch and eat it right after it's done, there's no reason you can't.

    Years ago I worked with an ICEy machine and its very similar it would go into defrost mode all the time and you had to sit around for 30 or 40 minutes until it went through the cycle. Then it took another time to refresh and refreeze everything. So they are not really broken most of the time, they just are not working most of the time. Cleaning cycles and defrosting cycles take up a lot of time and some places just don’t want to deal with them. So they turn them off and just say they are broken.

    I always say this every time this topic comes up, but I used to work at a McDonalds and when we said our ice cream machine was broken, IT WAS ACTUALLY BROKEN! But I can only speak for the McDonalds I worked at. But after the restaurant got renovated we got a new ice cream machine and we didn't have any problems with it after that as far as I'm aware

    As someone who works at mcdonalds, it does work most of the time at the store where i work. The refill mix is about 15-20kg and everyone hates refilling it. The store I work at has specific procedures at close to avoid having the machine clean itself during the day. We have an older machine as well, in the time I've worked there (nearly 4 years) we haven't replaced it at all and it only needs occasional tune-ups (like once a year).

      MCD manager here who has worked at several stores. The rate at which Taylor machines break is really dependant on the age of the machine. On average the machine is replaced once every 25 years, so in most cases the machine you see at a store has been there since the store was opened. Newer stores have the newest machines, and those usually break a lot less. A taylor mechanic comes in biweekly to clean and check if the machine needs a "tune up" or fix any issues.
