I would not be able to sleep even one night in this house! As my grandma used to say when she didn't care for something, " It's a good thing we're all different!"

It was more of a pavilion and not a full time home. There are other structures on the property.

Johnson would be distressed about the black glass surrounding him at night. Perimeter draperies were added to help with that. I've visited this house and it is truly remarkable, but not practical at all. It's a party room and I would have a bedroom suite in a different out building.
The Farnsworth House, which I prefer, was also just as problematic for occupants. They both are a beautiful concept, but then the day to day reality kicks in.

I like this house better than I like the Farnsworth House. Maybe it's the black framework? Definitely not a house for hoarders. That windowless "guest house" (isolation cell) is creepy!

Another great video. And thank you for clarifying the issues between the Glass House and the Farnsworth House, which came first, and what the architects thought of each other's work.

The true star of the show is the gorgeous landscape. The house itself just reflects and amplifies the beauty of it. The house needed no ornamentation because the setting was the ornamentation.

That caught my eye also, the home design is perfect for that/a property, that is secluded and lots of observable Nature in every direction, you can enjoy every season from the bed, couch or dining table. Your front door is the properties entrance gate 🧐....Not the best design for a urban property in the center of down town.

Even though Mid-Century houses are now 'old', they're still not my thing. In this case, I'd be freaked out that someone was watching, especially at night. Besides, I have too much stuff, and like to hang (not modern) art on my walls. This reminds me of the "Lake House" used in the movie of the same name, starring Sandra Bullock and Keanu Reeves. From bits of reading that I've done (and some stories you have shared here) architecture was a field rife with jealousy, drama, and scandal, lol.

Philip Johnson Plagiarized Mies Van Der Rohe's Farnsworth House with this project.
The Farnsworth House is a masterpiece.
    Mies was the genius.
Johnson was a self promoter with no new ideas and, in this case, a plagiarist.
When Johnson showed Mies this house, at first glance mies turned around and walked away.

My opinion, the politics aside, Farnsworth was more livable and practical where Johnson was more of an art piece on a perfect piece of land. I love them both but for different reasons.

Its up the street a couple miles from me. I have taken the tour. The house, including furnishings, are exactly as shown in early pictures. It is often asked if it gets hot in summer, and the answer is yes. To control the temp, a system was installed that creates an artificial fog every 20 minutes or so when its hot. You can see a little of this at 1:17 in the video.

Legend has it that Johnson ripped off a rough sketch of Farnsworth house but that he wasn't able to make out it was meant to be elevated. So he just put a glass box directly on the ground.
I don't know if this is true, but as long as Mies was around Johnson was a minor league player.

I toured it a few years ago. Don't get me wrong, it's beautiful, quiet, secluded. Rolling hills surround it ; there's a pond down the hill with a small concrete structure in it. It's great. The thing that gave me pause is the same one I have about the Stahl House in L.A.: the sun. The sun beats down on the contents of the house day in, day out. It takes a toll on what's inside. The docent said as much. There is, for example, an old painting in the Glass House the colors of which have faded over the years because of the sun.

Personal opinion on the architecture aside, it strikes me as inconsequential if one designs and builds a (nearly) totally transparent house only to completely withdraw it from the public eye.

There is an interview with Philip Johnson by Barbaralee Diamonstein (can be found on CZcams, but it is like 3 hours long) where he describes the night Mies was a guest. Mies said that he could not spend a night in the house, and Johnson then describes Mies staying at a neighbor's house instead.

    Rectangle, low ceilings, all glass!
Nice but let's face it these accolades for so many years for such a simple concept that millions have thought of and many constructed is a little over the top!
Without the location, the landscape it would be a boring rectangle glass house!
