Join myself (Ash), Michael and Josh (OneCast Media) as we fly the Cessna 182Q Skylane into a private Hindmarsh Island Airstrip. This is an unmaintained private airstrip and isn't available to the public, although it's still in amazingly good condition! It's nestled in a small valley on the northern side of Hindmarsh Island in South Australia and is exactly 500m fence to fence!

I'd think about getting a 172 SP, with plenty of power to get up and out of short strips, that is if I liked a 172's handling--I don't. I really like the older (and newer) Cessna 210's. I'm thinking about the distance between cities in Australia. I flew one corporately for an agricultural company in the midwest US. The earlier ones are more a 4 + 2 cabin but their weight hauling capability is legendary. I've flown newer turbo models routinely out of 1700' (530m) strips. On the other hand, older 210s are, well, old and Oz is a long way from the parts source in Wichita, KS USA

500m. That's the length of the strip of my home base. No problem for a 182Q. It is almost a STOL aircraft. I am used to that.

Awesome video guys, Great to see Aussie pilots making videos and keeping the interest in GA alive, I'd take the 182 for short strips as well their performance is awesome, they get off the ground quick and will cruise at 130kt TAS all day long, I've got 45hrs in a fully rebuilt 182Q going in and out of short strips it's a bloody nice plane to fly.

Totally agree, 182s are such a versatile plane! Q models are great value for money and they scrub up very nicely. Plus I’m a big fan of the Continental engine over the later Lycomings..

Dirt and Grass does make a big difference on takeoff because of the ground roll and using a notch of flaps gets you off very quickly to clear the 50 foot obstacles

The Continental 0-470 is known for carb ice. The Lycoming not as much but still an issue.
Hey guys, i own a Maule M8. 235 hp. We fly in and out of our strip here in Oregon. We fly in strips and gravel bars in Southern Oregon. I wouldnt trade it.

That's not a short runway lol The Cesna 182 is designed to land on 800 ft of runway
Glasair Sportsman 2 + 2 taildragger on tundra tyres, 4 seats for the family would be awesome but $$$. I’ve got a RANS S6S which is great on dirt strips similar to kitfox and I’m in SA too. Great CZcams guy keep it up. I’m getting keen to add fixed wing adventures to my CZcams.
Good choice. Those Sportsmans are a sleek looking aircraft! We'd love a RANS or similar, which part of SA are you in? Definitely get some videos happening, we need more aviation youtubers in Australia!
@@DeadstickAdventures I'm near Walker Flat. Have some dirt strips in a paddock 500m to 700m with some interesting challenges like slopes, humps and tree lines.

I have landed and taken off from an 1800 foot grass strip in a Beech D-18. I won't even mention things I have done in a C-182.

I thought a 182 can land much shorter ( Less than 1000 ft ) this guys make looks 1600 feet like a big deal, I am not bitching about it, would just like to know if Im wrong because I'm in the market for a 182, and I expect shorter landing than 1600 feet
They can definitely do shorter, but you’d want to REALLY check your weather, weight and skill. Personally I wouldn’t take it into shorter without some more training. Also I had 3 people on board and a bit of gas.
The short field landing chart for C182 gives ground roll distances ranging from 560 to 865 feet depending on altitude and temperature, but that is for a paved runway. For dry grass, it says to add 45% of this figure, making 812 to 1245 feet. That's just the ground roll; if there are obstacles then you'd look up the total distance which ranges from 1300 to 1805 feet, plus 45% of the ground roll, making 1552 to 2365 feet.
Short? You can land a 182 in half that length.
I flew Maule 5 and I would be rather doomed for live to stay with C150. It is furniture like coffin, not airplane. Impossible to enter doors, absolutely no space inside, no view, sharp edges everywhere, controls in front of gauges, dangerous handling on full flaps with front CG, huge control forces, stupid mechanical mix aileron / rudder and no performance at all. I mean in comparison with LSA I flew in STOL enviroment and some other 4 seater with VP prop. For the prizes nowadays I really don´t get it.
