    I am so terrible at this game and I am incapable of learning. I'm so bad it is almost worth it for me to go and buy an entire new army to fit around me rather than me trying to fit around an army because I am so awful at playing 40k that I am at my wit's end.
    Turns out that if you just go completely all out in turn 1 you just lose. But that dopamine from that first turn...I can't get enough...just one more try it'll work out this time I promise!

    This was an *amazing* video! The editing and scripting were both on-POINT with this one!!! As for mistakes I commonly make, it's hard to say because I primarily play Age of Sigmar, but usually one of my biggest mistakes is me crawling so deeply into my own brain trying to plan out the best move that it gives me a bit of analysis paralysis. I might forget which spells to cast or which units to move at what times. Stuff like that. But not going to lie here Paul, I think you'd *LOVE* Age of Sigmar's Ironjawz army. Their whole thing is just getting in their enemy's face turn 1 for some good old Krumpin'. That or maybe Blades of Khorne, hut with the way that army plays right now, you *do* need to use your brain to manage all their movement tech and combat tricks. Or just play a Slower army like Fyreslayers. There's no way you'll overextend for early fights when 90% of your army moves 4" at base.

    Man I feel you! I specifically play world eaters because they don’t penalize you for just rushing straight into the middle of the board. They have a stratagem for sticky objectives too so I just cap the points and bog up the entire enemy team in their side of the board. Super fun army to play if you can’t resist charging into combat.

      @jazzy4830 Před 3 měsíci

      @@awsomepokemon1060 Nah, always deploy aggressively, Khorne cares not from whence the blood flows, and you are going to have to cross that gap eventually. Sticky objective control supports this. You have excellent boosts to move and charge making it easy to get into melee blindingly fast and that also serves to protect you from shooting. The main situation that could cause this to fail is a combination of a long board and fighting a very long range army. But any armies built around close fighting or with generally shorter range weapons, even with a long board they will have to move towards you to maximise their firepower, and are unlikely to do catastrophic damage turn one, and now that they have moved even closer to you, guess what? Easier charge. This goes double for less competitive home games.

  • @themediater
    @themediater Před 3 měsíci +17

    I find the timeline of a game and how often you actually get to play it impacts how quickly you get better at it, like a game takes a couple hours, for me at least, if you brutally lose in turn 4 but the mistakes were potentially made in turn 1/2 then that could genuinely be an hour between the mistake being made and the outcome of that mistake so even if you are of a mindset of looking at what you did wrong and trying to avoid doing it again then you might not be able to recall the causal relationship there.
    Similarly if you only get to play one game of it, maybe 2 at a push in a session that takes up a decent chunk of a day and only get those in once or twice a month (this seems like a high estimate considering how often my friend group have not played and what I hear people play on average), chances are you aren't getting to put into practice what you're learning for quite a while and you'll probably make equally bad but different mistakes as well.
    Whereas you compare that to most other things you start out bad at and then get better at, like cooking, videogames, learning a song, a new thing at work, usually the feedback is immediate and obvious, you've boned up, the food tastes bad/burns. you died in the videogame, go back to a checkpoint and try again, that chord sounded awful, etc and if you want, you can straight away redo it and try it again, implement what you know now and improve. Bit tougher with Warhammer and a normal life/schedule.

    So glad I subscribed to your channel, I love that the videos you put out aren't just focused on one thing like painting or battle reports, but rather just your hobby journey in general so we get all of the things that the hobby has to offer. As far as "fixing" your problem, at first I thought the same as you, World Eaters and Orks would be great for you. However I think what would actually benefit you in the long run is playing a couple of games with T'au. As counterintuitive as it may seem, with T'au, especially in the Kauyon detachment, the name of the game is the opposite of advancing into your opponents deployment zone turn one. I think if you played a couple of games of T'au you might be able to expand your mindset when it comes to playing the game in general so when you play your favorite armies you can see the different avenues you can take for your battle strategy throughout the game.
    Cheers mate, keep up the great work!

      CSM... it's not your fault. Ever since 8th CSM have basically been the butt monkeys of 40k on the tabletop. Heck, loyalist firstborn marines got buffed to 2 wounds but CSM still only get 1.

  • @tajj7

    I actually did this in my first game of 10th, I played Firestorm Marines and obviously in my head was get within 12" and flame everything, which kind of worked initially then I was over committed and we got onto turn 3 the T'au player got his sustained hits and I basically got tabled. Next game I played against Orks and my opponent basically did the same thing, tried his waagh on turn 1 and just didn't make enough charges and I spent the next 2 turns after that mopping him up. So it is pretty common I reckon, it's that turn 1 'I need to do something' thought, whereas actually setting things up on turn 1 for impactful turn 2 and 3 is a lot better which also works well with your reserves.
    If it keeps happening maybe try Custodes? They might just survive running like mad lads across the board. But yeh that or World Eaters, or Orks, or Black templars or Blood Angels with lots of jump packs. Pretty sure Angron has like an absurd first turn threat range and if he dies he has a chance of coming back.

    My big flaw is that I love my tanks and vehicles. Whenever I’m build an army I start by throwing in my core of guardsmen, officers, artillery and other support units and then I start to put in my tanks but I quickly run out of space so I start to trim things down and suddenly at the end my nice balanced list now has 10 vehicles which have no support and get stuck in a huge traffic jam get swarmed and die. The games I do win are usually because a shooting army try’s to have a gunfight with me and they never have enough anti tank but also in those games it’s only ever 4 vehicles actually putting in work. The rest are all stuck in my deployment.

    You're not alone. I play Chaos Marines - specifically Iron Warriors because I want to be shooty Chaos. If I don't get shot off the board, I lose the melee. And then get shot off the board. Turns out power armor/terminator armor and being the "elite" evil faction doesn't actually protect you that much!

    If i could offer my advice on this subject, I'd say that you might actually be helped starting in the list-building phase. Putting designated "trash" units in your army that aren't there for damage, but just to score might help temper your bloodlust and score you some points. I'd also spend some time thinking about "trading", where you intentionally throw a "trash" unit or a killy unit of a cheaper points cost out onto an objective or to sacrifice itself for a kill, then wait for the opponent to move out of position and trade up. I also tell people newer to 40k, that to win a game, you really only need 3 objectives. Pick your three objectives as you deploy, and don't overcommit. Hope those help!

    I’m happy to see this video, I’ve been playing with my 2k salamanders against my friends 2k death guard, since then I have not won a single game, in fact, not a single game has made it to round 5 cause I get swelled every. Single. Time.
    He has 3 plague burst crawlers and no matter what I do, who I put in transports or reserves, they all eventually end up getting bombarded anyway, and that’s only the plague burst crawlers.
    What’s more sad is that he has a plague marine leader that gives fights first, on a melee dedicated squad. Now this would be fine and all but any time I’ve managed to get my nearly 300pts of agressors into melee with them, or my further 400pts of blade guard plus Adrax plus lieutenant, they always lose. They lose like half their unit, don’t have the man power to fight back and die the next round, this is on my turn where I charged them. It’s sucks. I struggle to keep playing this game because now my loss streak with these two armies is 15, I have taken the hours to play 15 games and lost every single one horribly.

    The main issue in games I tend to struggle with is usually movement and Objectives. As a Crimson Fist (glory to Dorn) I play heavy armor infantry and Anvil Siege force. Once I get a unit into position then tend to hold it really well either with cover or plunging fire. The problem is getting them their because it takes a turn or 2 to get most of my units into position meaning at least my first turn is pretty bad because I have to move them toward objectives in the no mans land and I have to wether the storm from being somewhat in the open or closer to their charges. That being said after i hunker down I’d like to see them try to take those objectives because 10 S8 AP-3 D2 hitting on 2s re-rolling.

    Love it. Hey, it's all good - this is most players. Because shooty shooty bang bang kill kill is a lot of FUN! It's just, yeah, it doesn't tend to actually win the game. Maybe for a fun game, ask someone to join you as a coach, just so they can constantly slow you down on your own turn and ask "Hey buddy, how does this move help you complete the objective? Are you sure there isn't a move that does 90% of the same thing, but makes you safe if it goes wrong?".

    Funny enough, I recently had the opposite problem in AoS. My Sylvaneth were going up against a Seraphon list that was oops all wizards. Lord Kroak, Slaan mage, skink starpriest, and a banner wielder with an arcane tome. My opponent (who was a great sport, by the way, this game was a lot of fun I just played terribly) was able to cast 11 spells in their hero phase, a lot of which were at like, +2 or +4 to cast, and the same for dispelling rolls. I had Alarielle and I think I got like, two spells off. The trick was his hero phase was incredibly strong, but the rest of his army was Saurus chaff that melted if my Kurnoth sneezed on them. So his strategy was to castle his heroes in a chokepoint and cast spells at me until it was safe to come out and claim objectives or get enough lizard wizard points to summon stronger units onto the field.
    And I kind of just... let him do that.
    I don't know what it was but I was allergic to aggression that game. He might have been holding a choke point, but for all intents and purposes, I had his entire army surrounded. Sylvaneth can teleport all over the place and I had some really good Wyldwood placements. I could have completely surrounded his army with my melee Kurnoth and slowly but surely worked my way through all of his chaff to get to the wizards in the middle, shutting down his entire game plan and keeping him off objectives entirely. Meanwhile, my Dryads and Tree Revenants could have held objectives while my Bow Kurnoth and Alarielle chipped away at the massive block of lizards with really, REALLY strong ranged attacks. But I just... didn't do that? I tried to play defensively against an army that did not care about how far away I was because the Slaan have boardwide casting, all because I was worried he was going to kill me in melee despite him saying at the beginning of the game that he really, REALLY did not want to fight me in melee because he knew he wouldn't win because, surprise surprise, the obsese frog wizards aren't great melee fighters! There were a lot of things that went wrong for me in this game. I rolled three 1s in a row on run rolls in round 1, and my dice wanted me to lose more than my opponent, but that fundamental lack of aggression when it was really needed cost me the game.
    In other words, I too am a tactical moron and I need to study my games more to figure out when aggression is needed.

    For a long time in old editions my poor Eldar just… died all the time because my only plan was to go muzzle to muzzle with space marines and get hosed. Only when I learned to be tricksy did I begin to win. Once I learned the art of the Refused Flank, everything came together for me. Once I learned to deploy WIDE across the board with fast units on the ends, forcing my slower enemies to deploy wide to oppose me, I could use my superior speed to recoil my force to one side of the board and make half the enemy force slog slowly for three turns to get to play… by which time I’d have concentrated my power on the first half and be ready for them.
    You are stuck trying to win the game in Turn 1. The secret is to win it *in deployment.*

    I'm a little late but I kind of make the opposite mistake where I place half my army into reserve and then the rest into transports so I have 2 units at the start of the game that I can drop down. Its really fun having land raiders because if they don't have serious anti tank power then most of my squishy infantry is going to be able to make it into melee and do their damage. I even sort of send them in saves, first my bladeguard then my Sword Brothers. Then I have Vanguard Vets in deep strike to come down and do mission actions or try and jam up some target. However against Tau, this plan REALLY didn't work and my Land Raider went down turn one to a storm surge and I had to kinda wing it. The game came down to the wire but I was just barely able to squeak out a win thanks to Bladeguard and Chaplin in a drop pod finding a nice corner to tie up the stormsurge and scare him lol

Or you could play PHR so you know your units can at least survive one shot

I main Kroot and my whole army gets a 7" scout move, then a 7" normal move and is OC2, so I basically just flood the middle board with so many surprisingly durable bodies that I can't possibly not play the objective game and just prioritize what I have to kill in the moment.
