    How much music do you have on your hardrive??

    • @folkenson
      @folkenson Před 3 lety +4

      Prior to 2013 - 9 terabytes. I started doing exclusively video after that and started from scratch. Current music drive is loaded on to Dropbox so my desktop and laptop are duplicated with 63 gig of MP3's and 273 gig of MP4 videos. The wedding for this weekend has a "Client Data" folder with all of the music for the day. When I turn on my laptop, my desktop music for the weekend syncs with the laptop and I'm good to good in less than 15 minutes. I am exclusively a Wedding Video DJ so anything that doesn't pack a diverse dance floor is GONE. I have a great hotspot and an Amazon Music is a shortcut to get anything needed in a couple minutes so no need for fluff.

    this video is awesome, so many great points and made me chuckle a few times 😂 currently consolidating hard drives and trying to get rid of dups. Total is 3tb. Most of it is karaoke from other DJ's when I was just starting to do karaoke, and there are def plenty of dups. The other 500 gigs is MP3's. 300 gigs of music given by a DJ years ago when I was just starting out, the remaining 200 gigs is what I've accumulated over the past 10 years. I use some dups intentionally in my personally curated catalog to save folders from past events and to make different playlists that use the same songs on my master list; so I don't remove dups from it.

      One of your better videos. Good insight on best practices for music management. DJ's are so focused on having all songs, that they forget how many copies of the song that they do have.
      With DJ's moving to music videos and projection visuals, it is important to be a bit more minimalistic with your Library and be more organized.

    Love the video, ive been having a major gut out of my DJ collection for months now.. and ive found an AMAZING workflow, that works for me anyways... im actually auto renaming every FILENAME from the ID3 tags by "Artist - Title.mp3" and it means if i get any dupes i can spot them instantly and decide which ones i want to keep in each instance. I can NEVER have 2 of the same song ever again. I label REMIXES and LIVE versions on the track title and it then makes the Filenames unique.
    i then separated them into AMBI/WARMUP/PEAK in the folder structure using Serato fields to categorise, then FILES to move all the tracks into folders per crate name. I then broke it all into PUB/PARTY/CLUB/WEDDING via more tags and setup smart crates that filter per venue/crowd type that i play.... its going amazing so far... more than halved my collection and you're right its liberating..
    I can generate a full event picking list / playlist now simply via tags that suits the room im playing in... and it's REALLY accurate.. awesome.

    Nick Great Video! I did my duplicates 8 years ago and I keep 200 GB approximately 35,000 songs and I don't keep full albums only tracks that are hits or singles on my 1TB SSD internal drive. I use an external drive for my music videos only because they take up the most space and Serato screams but I have a great Dell PC thats very fast. I didn't have the luxury of Serato play count then now I may us it to trim the fat on my current library. Thank you for the tip!

  • @MasonThomas
    @MasonThomas Před 3 lety +10

    Not sure, but this might be a useful tip: You can choose to organize by bitrate by clicking on the section, AND THEN SUB-ORGANIZE the play count by Command-clicking it. Not sure if that makes things faster? Maybe would result in less gaps between the songs that had a play count.

    I've paid for duplicate finding software and had the same problems! I ended up deleting lots of tracks I played. I agree that being a bit more ruthless with folder deletion is the way forward. I deleted a tonne of remixes, DJ edits with crappy beats and mixes. It feels so satisfying to delete a huge folder I'll realistically never play. I've still got loads to go, but I've come from 1.2tb to around 800gb. My actual folder of regularly played tracks is only 60gb and most of that doesn't even get touched. Weirdly, the less tracks I have, the more tracks I play!

    I use iTunes to organize my music. For the tracks that are in poor quality, but that I play, I’ve added a comment on it like « poor quality ». Then, I’ve created a smart playlist that group all the tracks that have « poor quality » in comments. That way, I take time to replace them with good quality versions and when it’s done, I put them in the right playlists and delete the poor quality version. Also, there is a tool called Fakin The Funk that detect the true bitrate, as some tracks are marked with 320 for example but in reality, they are not 320 !

    As a dj who is restarting a dj business (after a decade away) Post Covid-19 on a new computer system then I will not have any legitimate play counts from gigs/events. I still have a load of music which I moved from my old hard drive and added these with the new songs I've accumulated. I know that I have a load of duplicates. I discovered that I had mistakenly ripped a load of CD's at 160k mp3 so I'm going to rip all those again at 320k. Your tip about other tracks under 192k is something I'll also be approaching doing. I'll be looking at these more closely to see if I now have better quality versions and if not maybe I will try getting them and swapping them with the old.
    I wonder what's your reason for still having a few tracks at 128k and no other versions on of the same song on your system? Haven't you considered getting the 320k mp3 versions of those songs.

  • @alexl3557
    @alexl3557 Před rokem

    Mine is just over 1TB but I do video for the majority of my events - I was at 4TB but cleaned out duplicates, I also keep two versions of some songs (a remix and original) as I will play both depending on the crowd. Took me the better part of a week to do this as I redid my crates as well at this point.
    As for speed, I still use external drives but I run a SSD external through USB-C with a 3.2 gen 2 cables which is up to 10GBPS transfer speed so I notice 0 difference if a song is stored on internal or external drive. same load speed for either.
    I do run a docking station to allow for only one cord into my macbook which drops my speed down to 5gbps but still hardly notice a difference between internal and external load speed for songs.
    Best part is I carry a duplicate SSD that is always mirrored 100% to the original so if it fails, I can plug it in and I still have all my crates with songs(file paths, and names are all the same)

The one thing holding me back is I like the xCopy command on PC to allow me to back up files from one laptop to my desktop and a backup laptop. This is simple because I have Serato setup to point to the same root directory on all my computers. C:/my music/ for example. Is there a way to do that with a Mac? I don’t have to rescan for songs. I just copy the Serato files over, and I’m set. Everything is mapped perfectly.

      Haha I mean you can't really notice a difference between 256 and 320 unless you're listening to a crazy ass system

    Im down to about 16K songs and about 100 GB. Ive been reorganizing since Covid started though. I went alphabetically from 0 and now I'm at the letter S. My question is when you say you have a ton of songs in any given folder that has 0 plays you deleted. Did you listen to them at all and save a couple or straight up delete???

    • @NickSpinelli
      @NickSpinelli  Před 3 lety +2

      nah I just straight deleted them haha because I figure if anything I end up needing is missing, I can just grab it from my backup

    Yes, Nice video. I just did the same. Went from 50,000 tracks down to just under 12,000. And I know there are still duplicates. I did this in VDJ (because its better lol), the same way you did this in Serato. Game changer!!

    I have 6 TB worth of music on external drives. I typically use just 400gigs that are on my internal hardrive and bring an external 1tb drive as a backup. So typically I just use the 400gigs that are on my computers hardrive. I don't rely on my externals, those are just for those song requests that I get before hand......And I snagged that much music from Frostwire (Torrent Software) And yes my whole library is 320kbit. I use BPM Supreme for clean edits of songs, so I do pay for music to keep me up to date now. I definitely have loads of duplicates and even my 400gigs is bloated with duplicates, I'm just afraid of removing them in case I get that message that it's no longer in my library or it's an error track. So I just leave the duplicates for the most part. Not a big deal as the tracks I use in VDJ is all colour coded. It's how I know what tracks I use regularily, if it ain't a colour it's not used. Should I keep going with this madness, lol
