Together, with Fr. Mike, we arrive at the conclusion and “nugget day” for the section on liturgy and culture. Fr. Mike reiterates the importance of the fact that the Church does not abolish culture, but redeems and fulfills it. He also emphasizes that even though the Church welcomes liturgical diversity, there are still some things that are incompatible with the Faith and, therefore, unable to be incorporated into Catholic liturgy. Today’s readings are Catechism paragraphs 1204-1209.

Who doesn't love the intro????? for me it always brings peace and comfort knowing we're going to learn and/or have a refresher on the catholic teachings!
i also loved how he talked about 1207 and where the church transforms a celebration or culture and makes it from bad to Good. One thing that comes to mind is the first couple of weeks in December where many dancers from Mexico and United States give thanks to our Lady through dancing. Dancing was an Aztec tradition where they would dance to the Sun, Moon, and other things that they thought was Gods, but once Millions converted thanks to the help our Lady of Guadalupe, we now dance as a way to give thanks to our lady and most definitely as a way to show gratitude and worship to Jesus Christ.
I don't love it. Does that make me a bad person???? I love Father Mke but after 165 days I can say the intro right along with him - but at this point I could do without it.

Another answer about why the intro is important. People decide to start the podcast at all times. New people need to know where they can get resources. I joined both the Bible in a Year and the Catechism in a year a long time after they started, and I got the Bible and the Reading Plan, then I got the Catechism and the Reading Plan. And I LOVE the Ascension Press edition of the Catechism!!!!

As an artist I know how important it is that we express ourselves and create Christian, Catholic culture that reflects and honors God. We need to be making Christian art, music, literature, films and performances and support the arts that reflect our beliefs. We have too long participated with cultural things that disrespect and denigrate our faith. We have made rich people that disdain our Lord and Lady. When will we stop being addicted to pop culture and sports?
This is where coming to mass; and sitting for a few extra minutes means to me: you are standing in the gap for all the short comings for the believers; and non-believers in the entire world. You are the next chapter of Acts.

I love the explanation of why the once pagan symbol of the Christmas tree has been brought into the Catholic tradition. I wonder if this can - at some point - be discussed regarding other once pagan symbols or traditions.
Yes. That example clarified the point for me. Then I remembered Easter eggs, rabbits, and chicks. It is funny how inconsistent we humans can be about accepting some symbols while rejecting others.

An example of how the culture has shaped the Catholic Church in Greece is the Easter celebration. Since 98% of the Greek population are Greek Orthodox and celebrate Easter most of the time on a different date than the west, it would be weird for the Catholic Church in Greece to celebrate Holy Week and Easter at a different time than the rest of the local population, especially since on Good Friday the Catholic Church, like the Greek Orthodox, has a funeral procession through the streets of the city (Thessaloniki, in this case) where traffic is stopped by the police. That can't happen on two different Fridays! So many tourists are surprised to find that the day they think is Easter Sunday and go to Mass expecting it, isn't Easter Sunday at all. We really need to work on getting that date settled into one.

Fr, In Singapore we have a culture of giving oranges during the Chinese (Lunar) New Year season. The churches here distribute blessed oranges to the parishioners after the Masses on Chinese New Year's Day.

I live about 30 mintues from New Orleans. I just wanted to be clear that the practice of voodoo is definitely a cult and not a practice of most people who live in this great state of Louisiana. In Jackson Square one may find people selling their services of voodo or palm reading.. etc but this is definitely a cult, evil and a mortal sin for those participating. This is not the norm. Most people of South Louisiana are Catholics and would never consider seeking someone practicing voodoo, palm reading, etc. We have the St Louis Cathedral and many beautiful churches. Most people in South Louisiana are practicing Catholics.

There's a South American grocery store that sells rosary/St Benedict bracelets and necklaces, but on some some of the beads are the evil eye or hamsa hand thus teaching made me think of that. I don't know if the sellers are Catholic or new age or some cultural thing like you describe here. I know the guy behind the jewelry counter gave me the creepiest of vibes. But what you said about voodoo and tribal customs makes sense to me. We had Easter egg hunts at my home parish and I got a stuffed bunny as a prize that kept for the longest time, I tried to throw it away more than once but some how it escaped trashing! That happened once when I was younger and threw it out with a lot of other toys, and then I found it again and threw it out when I left home for college. Somehow it ended up in a pile of empty plastic bags stashed away in the corner of a laundry room storage cabinet full of extra empty bags! It had survived the stuffy purge! I recalled this a stuffed animal I got from church funds and took it as a sign of repentance for me to honor things of the church, some produced by the good-will tithes and chosen administrators of the Church and I should honor that but also let it be a symbol and metaphorical reminder that when all other things of the world fade the "things of God will remain" now every time I see that stuffed bunny I recollect the resurrection and passion of Christ. Since it survived my many possessions purges when I see it I think "wow I should really give God a place of honor in more areas of my life, because He's the One that lasts no matter what happens in my life."
For me, my family, and all participating in CIAY: my adorable Jesus, may our feet journey together, may our hands gather in unity, may our hearts beat in unison, may our souls be in harmony, may our thoughts be as one, may our ears listen to the silence together, may our glances profoundly penetrate each other, may our lips pray together to gain mercy from the Eternal Father. the "evil eye" attracts demons. so I would say this is someone either very misguided, demonic or in the new`age trap of ignorance.
In the liturgy, there are unchangeable elements because they are of divine institutions viz sacraments. However, there are elements that the Church has the power to adapt to the authentic riches of diverse cultures. The Church, in the end, remains the faithful guardian of the liturgy.

It is fitting that the liturgical celebration tends to express itself in the culture of the people where the Church finds herself, though without being submissive to it.
The Liturgy itself generates and shapes cultures
*Culture is generated and shaped by the way we pray, which is one of the reasons why we have to be so faithful to our Tradition that we have been given*
When we are faithful to it and we do it in the most beautiful and power way, for the sake of the People of God, it actually does *generate and shape culture*
Praying for the glorification of God and sanctification of man shapes culture
Father Mike, the reason that you read the credits at the first is so that those who don’t want you to read the credits might come to see Christ so they can see God.
So, the beginning is just to see where we are at spiritually. Hmm. Many failed the test; speeding him up; I mean; what if he was standing right there; watching you do this? So, if you take it with stride; wow, you passed.

Not sure about how the Day of the Dead is celebrated in the Catholic Church when it includes Aztec dancing, food for the dead etc. How does this conform into Catholic teaching? Just wondering..
That's what went through my mind when I posted; Oh Jesus, I surrender myself; take care of everything. Some things are out of our hands; and so, our faith is being tested; that he will take care of everything.
Day 165 takeaways: Summary of Liturgical Diversity. The diversity is not a random diversity. There is variety but that variety must have a clear unity as well. The mission of the Church is to engage every people and therefore diversity is a welcomed necessity. Some aspects of culture, like the Christmas tree, were originally pagan in origin but were adapted to a Christian tradition and meaning. There are some things, like voodoo, that are incompatible with the Christian faith. The criteria for inclusion of practices is that it must have unity in Liturgical Apostolic Tradition. Culture is shaped by the way we pray.
What liturgical rite is the most common in the Holy Land?
A: All my unspoken requests for people. They might not want their name put. They ask questions like: why is there so much crime; and the good get inflicted. 19)Tim Opper. Lord, his suffering is the same as Glee's. Lord, I pray the same prayer; as was prayed for; for Glee Berger.
20) Morre Hope. Lord, when one suffers in the world we all suffer. Please protect children of all ages in the cults; safety first; then conversion to the CF. Dismantle my ex-cult to a thing of the past. May the people not be hardened toward God; when they realize; especially this particular die-hard-fan who was "created" and formed; brainwashing. Amen.

asking for prayer; it is a sign of "surrender;" the only gift of poverty; even if they are rich; we are all poor; in God's economy. We vagabonds unite; in a group effort; that which; when our friend can't do it on their own; we have their back; and we say for our friend: fill us with your 7 Virtues. Fill us with your Holy Spirit. Amen. Our friend then will then be surrendering more and more of his/or her life; until they are nourished enough; through our concerns and prayers; transcending nourishment to their soul; and then; they start practicing the Catholic Faith! Quote: As far as beauty because of my aliments I cannot wear makeup, jewelry, and must wear very loose clothes so they do not touch my skin. I am happy and thankful for each new day God chooses for me to have."
Lord, heal your precious sheep; wear she can't even wear her own fiber; euphemism. Amen.
Update: she had a failed operation for carpole tunnel; and now three future operations planned. Healing is of the children's bread Lord. Amen.

Father in Heaven thank You for the Gift of Your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord and Savior. Thank You for the Gift of the Holy Spirit who nurtures us with Love and Guidance. Father we thank You for being Our Father and calling us all to more thoroughly learn the catechism, which is genius by the way. Father, thank You for calling Pope Francis, Father Mike and all priests and religious. I pray that tons of people will answer the call and follow in Father Mike's footsteps. Lord God, to be more specific, please gift Father Mike extraordinarily with more graces/gifts because, Lord, he is exactly what this world needs. He is so humble and is also fluent in the gift of gab but he uses it for Your Glory. If more people listened to him, Truly listened and followed his advice, the world would be a much better place. Alot of people are busy playing cat and mouse games and focusing on anything but You. How Patiently Loving You are. But I do believe that those in office, those who have the public's ear, those of the money trail would do well listening to Father Mike Schmitz. It could save lives. It could save souls.
