  • Sir Keir Starmer appeared to take a dig at the previous Conservative government as he told reporters: "Self-interest is yesterday's politics."
    In his first press conference as prime minister, the Labour leader said he and his now-Cabinet had been spending the past six months preparing to lead the country so they were ready to "hit the ground running".

People sitting this election out because it’s been 100% certain Labour was going to win for months now, but who otherwise are happy to see the change. If he is touring the UK nations, will he announce who he's going to appoint as Secretary of State for England? And when will he introduce legislation to end the constitutional discrimination against England and give England a devolved national parliament as Labour did for the other UK nations last time were were the UK-wide government?

    • @ianholloway3778
      @ianholloway3778 Před 7 dny +2

      @@kiandocherty3589 the size of England is irrelevant. It should should have the same level of autonomy as the other UK nations free of the influence of the other UK nations. And the fact that it you might even consider the UK parliament to now be an English Parliament demonstrates that a clear seperation is required so that as with Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland the UK parliament only deals with reserved 'federal' matters across the whole of the UK and there is no confusion between England and the UK. As with the other UK nations, as a proud historic nation England deserves its own government and First Minister to lead the nation distinctly from UK institutions. If Scotland had won the Euros the team would have had a reception with the First Minister of Scotland but probably not with the PM of the UK. If England were to win (and no, I'm not holding my breath) there is no leader of England to host the reception, so it would become a UK event at Downing St. and not so long ago the UK PMs were Scottish (Blair & Brown) which just shows that England needs its own national political instituitions and leader.
