Language: Wolof. His drummer, Manu Katché and his good friend Youssou N'dour are from Senegal where Wolof is one of the main languages. Peter has been fighting FOR Africa and Africans since the 1970s (in 1980 he released "Biko" about how South African "Security" personnel tortured and murdered a political prisoner Stephen Biko ; he later was asked to play it live for Nelson Mandela and did). A brilliant Live performer with top tier backing (Tony Levin on bass, from King Crimson, is a genius). Peace, Fay- glad to see you enjoyed an Englishman"s version of African music, as I have for years.

I read that according to Peter Gabriel himself, the lyrics to "In Your Eyes" would be inspired by African tradition, and could either refer to a romantic relationship between a man and a woman; or to a divine relationship between someone and their God. 🙂
And something has not escaped me. The drummer is French, I recognized him straight away! They are Emmanuel Katché (known as Manu Katché), his mother and French and his father is African (from the Ivory Coast); on the other hand, he returned to Africa when his son was only two years old.

Peter Gabriel has always been a big advocate for World Peace. The Nobel Prize Laureates awarded Peter Gabriel the 2006 Man of Peace for his commitment to human rights and for his outspoken rejection of war as a means to solve conflicts.
Also check pout his other live performances:
*SHAKING THE TREE* , about women's rights, you'll also hear some lyrics in Wolof: czcams.com/video/3_Q79lls1f0/video.html
*COME TALK TO ME* , about his young daughter who stopped talking to him when he got divorced. This is a more recent performance, he sings with his daughter, now an adult: czcams.com/video/4J1gWMLbV70/video.html
*SOLIBURY HILL* about his decision to leave the rock band Genesis: czcams.com/video/GimLuOUVkxg/video.html
...and although there are many great live versions of *BIKO* , his song about the late Stephen Biko, an Anti-apartheid activist who was beaten to death by the police after being arrested, I found that this version, created last year, is clear and sends a very positive message. It is performed by Peter Gabriel, along with musicians from around the globe, reinforcing the message that we are all, at the end of the day, one people. czcams.com/video/jWNEr4eHL18/video.html

Nice! I haven't seen that video in two decades. Peter Gabriel taught African rhythms to us kids in America without our knowing it. His song "Games Without Frontiers" blew my mind in 1980. I was only thirteen and nothing else on the radio sounded like it, not even Talking Heads. I bought the album on cassette and wore it out. I bought it again on cd fifteen years later. When you're ready for more from him, check out "Biko" or "A Different Drum" off The Passion album.

Peter Gabriel is one of the best at combining his modern music with African beats, words, and sounds, and also wrote a fantastic tribute to Stephen Biko. If you like this, you may also have heard of another artist named Paul Simon, who produced a Grammy-Award winning album, with the backing of Mariam Makeba, and the group Ladysmith Black Mambazo (who I had the pleasure of seeing in concert). The album is called "Graceland", and is considered by many to be a masterpiece.

Well, this is what happens when one combines multinational genius, it unleashes multinational beauty! The female solo vocalist is Paula Cole, the baritone African man is the late Papa Wemba (may he rest in peace 💞). No one comments on the brilliant drummer, (damn, his name keeps slipping my mind!), but he is one of the most expressive drummers I ever heard! Jean Claude on keyboards was art in motion, and I've never seen anyone else rock satin shorts and a tuxedo jacket, the man was the king of cool, lolllll 😂😂🤣.
The one element I'm certain of was Papa Wemba dancing what looks like a Massai traditional tribal dance, which I thought was thrilling.
Other reactors have covered this performance, but I'm going to be be enjoying this reaction many times over the upcoming holiday season. For me, the highlight was Paula Cole. Her voice is so ethereal and elevates the performance to a different level. Her crystal clear tone contrasts starkly with Gabriel’s rather gravelly timbre. She is best known properly for singing the theme tune to Dawson’s Creek, “I Don’t Want to Wait” and also “Where have all the Cowboys Gone. Manu Katché the drummer is superb while the bassist Tony Nevin is something of a genius on Bass. The violinist and baritone (the deep singer you liked) is Lakshminaryana Shankar, another prodigy who was giving concerts at seven years of age. He pioneered the double-necked violin, so he has the range of violin and viola on one neck, cello and bass on the other. Papa Wemba is from DR Congo and his band is called Malakai.
I think you would like Shaking the Tree which was written by Gabriel and Youssou N’Dour, a Senegalese, about liberating women and is in the same Secret World concert.

So from what country in Africa are you? It is such a huge continent.
Peter Gabriel is so creative. He is one of the first to use 'world beat music' in his rock. I believe the second language is Senegalese. This beat is so infectious and joyous.
He started in Genesis, an English progressive rock band. He played and sang there with Phil Collins who was the drummer and backup singer. When Peter left for his solo career. Collins took over the singing. I think you would also appreciate Mr. Collins solo work. Genesis is one of the world's greatest rock groups, selling over 100 million recordings. So you might look into them.
