Installing Artix Linux (Like Arch, but better)

  • I needed to reinstall Artix Linux on my (UEFI) desktop, so went through the process here. It's basically the same as installing Arch, but with minor changes which I'll note. Artix is just Arch without systemd: it allows OpenRC, runit or s6. Get the distribution here: artixlinux.org/ I did the minimal install, similar to how Arch Linux is usually installed, but there are also many desktop environment ISOs including Cinnamon, Plasma, XFCE, i3 and more which should be even easier to install.
    Once you have the minimal install done, you can install a graphical environment: • After a Minimal Linux ...
    There are only several differences between this and an Arch install: some commands are named differently: `genfstab` in Arch while `fstabgen` in Artix, `basestrap` in Artix, while `pacstrap` in Arch. Obviously the commands to autostart services will be different since we have a different init system. Note that I install this for a UEFI machine, but a machine running traditional BIOS should just be one or two commands different. UEFI machines must have a FAT32 boot partition and a different grub install command.

      The only difference is how they function. You can find in-depth details about Systemd and why its tragic on a YT channel called linux.conf.au. OpenRC is developed by Gentoo and you might not find differences in speed. It is only seconds fast and that's it.

    • @ChitrakChattopadhyay
      @ChitrakChattopadhyay Před 3 lety +4

      OpenRC is faster, systemd has too many default services so boot times are slower, otherwise they should work the same, but OpenRC for superfast boot even on an hdd.

    • @ChitrakChattopadhyay
      @ChitrakChattopadhyay Před 3 lety

      @uraharasama1 I turn off or mask systemd journaling and network manager services and it helps me boot faster and my internet works just fine, so systemd does dick actually besides taking up my time in these aspects,
      last I checked grub was the bootloader not systemd, and when it tries to be the grub has to be configured differently or you're in the grub rescue.
      And why would you game on linux? Lutris doesn't care about soystemd even if u do.

    • @ChitrakChattopadhyay
      @ChitrakChattopadhyay Před 3 lety

      @uraharasama1 just systemd-analyze and compare your boot times, be careful tho, you should know what a service does before masking it. Also if you're on an nvme or SSD it will make less of a difference but I have cut down 6 to 10 seconds on my manjaro boots.

    I originally planned to install Alpine Linux as the bare metal operating system on the infrastructure machines in my home office until recently coming across Adelie Linux. However, I rely heavily on Docker containers and Adelie Linux does not currently have the docker application in its repositories. Fortunately, Atrix Linux meets all of the requirements. As I watched this video I performed the first installation. Adelie Linux will still be used for the workstations/terminals since the goal is to remotely connect to the infrastructure machines via ssh to access the containerised applications. Systemd free by month-end.

    Hi! I love the availability and the simplicity of installing packages on Arch, that's the main thing that keeps me in Arch. The other day I was trying out a Debian based distro and installing packages quickly became a nightmare, i just couldn't install anything that was outside of the supported repos. And trying to compile from a ppa was horrible, I was always missing a dependency or it just wouldn't compile.
    So how's the package availability on Artix compared to Arch? If you/someone could answer me this question I would be very thankful!
    PD: Sorry if my English is a little broken, it's not my first language. Cheers from Argentina!

    Hi, Luke! What do you think of the new dinit ISO of Artix?
    In my opinion, this is probably vanilla Arch, but without the bloat because dinit behaves VERY similarly to systemd, but if systemd was ONLY an init system. Even the syntax is the same:
    systemctl enable cups -> dinitctl enable cups
    I think you should try it out in a video that could be titled like "dinit: systemd, but without the BLOAT???"

    Well nutz. I just installed Artix LXDE on my testing partition before noticing this vid.
    I did not install install the bootloader since Calamares usually fails when attempting to replace a partition.
    After partitioning & formatting manually then it installs ok.
    I rechecked the locale.conf and was good. I set the timezone ok. But there was no quick adjustment from the desktop that I could find.
    First updates did not complete due to conflict ; but interactive notification of the affected files made it easy to remove and try again. Interesting to note, I used su to do some things and when I logged out it errored about a child process and would not logout.
    Once I used sudo once it then gave options to logout, reboot...etc.
    Great video. I'll be reviewing it again .

    I wonder if anyone can answer me this. Say if I want to install a user friendly version of Linux for someone who's new to Linux, and I want them to use an Arch based distro. Would Manjaro or Artix be better?
    Like apart from Artix not using SystemD and having more variety with Desktop Environments compared to Manjaro, are there any big differences between the two? As I might use their LXQT DE if someone's PC is too weak to run KDE.
    As a side question, is there a reason to learn GenToo apart from improving your Linux skills? I'd like to step-up to the challenge of installing GenToo, but I feel like it might be a waste since no casual would want to learn it, nor know how to use it. At least with Arch there's a couple Distros based off of it that can make noob user more comfortable.

    Hey Luke, what are the practical benefits to using a non SystemD init system? I just swiped to Arch from Windows a few months ago and life has been good. Everything seems fine, but maybe I am too novice to really understand what the point of changing init systems would be. Thanks :)

    Is it a good idea to first mount the flash drive to /mnt/usb for example and then run `dd`? In this way there is much less change of getting things totally wrong

      Personally I like using Ventoy. Get a large capacity USB drive and install ventoy and you can use it normally as a flash drive but you can also boot from any iso stored on it.

    Rumor has it most FATs can be used for the EFI partition, original or the long filename versions[vFAT] of 12, 16, and 32. Original only does "8.3" filenames.
    My grub2 based system only has 4MB in the EFI partition at the moment.
    Creating a FAT32 may act a fool if the cluster count is less than 65525 (just under 2^16), this is because some ancient systems deduced the FAT type from cluster count. (FAT type has been part of metadata for decades now.)
    I like to use 4k sectors[blocks] as most modern drives are physically 4k blocks even if they use their cache to pretend they are 512B. Which makes the minimum FAT32 256MiB with cluster size of 1 sector. FAT16 with 4k sectors is good from 16MiB up to 4GiB [2GB in the mid 80's version].
    If you setup so that only the bootloader is in the EFI, you don't need anywhere near 256MB(16MB will do). If your setup keeps kernel images and stubs on the EFI partition and you multi-boot and play with several kernels per distro then you may want more than that like 70-100MB each kernel. Add 32MB if there will be a Windows bootloader.

    major help incase anybody wants you can probably (it does work with LXDE and thus assume it works with the other desktop varations) you can do the base install from one the desktop live installs which I think you shoulld do if you are going to unto a device that doesn't have an ethernet or busted ethernet port, like a chromebook, since those include software that lets you quickly set-up the a wireless connection without any hassel.
